After reading the largely ill informed and negative comments in this section about the Messara report i can only conclude that the industry is stuffed and we might as well close it down now and save ourselves another 10 years of stress and pointless arguments.
Yes the report may not be correct in every aspect (what business plans are??) but the overall direction is spot on.
i can only conclude that those of you who choose to bag it either have vested interests which colour your opinions or have no idea.

This is what racing is all about, the story had it all, everyone is in with a show, no matter what your budget is, you can't put a price on that winning  feeling no matter how big or small it maybe.Thank for sharing the story, really  enjoyed it.

Huey, they run 1-22 in flaming maidens here in Oz! they run 56 for 1000 at Kembla in a maiden....holy moley, breeding to race is one thing, but so many will not even make it to the races, trial, tail out and get sacked, and you know where to don't you? poor buggers, try to improve your product Huey, not weaken it.......SI used to be strong, Mellay, Noble Bijou, Gatekeeper,Burgundy who was sent north for God's sake...... just to name a few, wonderful stallions, but to justify a two thousand dollar service fee when your racing is in such a poor state, no go zone Huey, think it through.....you're a clever bugger, you know it makes sense.

Breeding for the knacker! 1-22, they run that in b75's all he time over here, two grand up in smoke...spin is fine, we are used to it, rewarding mediocrity is another thing. Good racehorse, maybe, but to stand at stud, no way Jose.

    El Doute
I bought him at the June MM sales, same venue that I bought Enzo's Lad Gp1 and LR winner, Montoya Star and others.
He is an upstanding  good looking son of RC with a great temperament and when with Chris Waller ran a class record winning at Rosehill 1.22.23 under 58.0 kgs
Put in a very good run in Gp1 Levin Classic when 5th and was second favourite at one stage for NZ Derby. Did win twice at 2, one of only three 2 year old winners worldwide sired by RC that year
I think he is a real chance especially for those wanting to breed to race to sell, outlay is only $2,000 no vet or grazing find me another stallion  in NZ by a champion sire out of high class Gp1 winning mare standing at such a realistic fee
His 14 starts in NZ yielded 4 wins  from 1100m to 1400m

    Pin pricking, yes, I know.
But did you notice that in the credits no acknowledgment was made to the Wanganui Jockey Club nor the Auckland Racing Club, but there was an acknowledgment to the caterers.
A few years ago saw a Kath & Kim piece filmed at Moonee Valley.  They acknowledged, and I am not joking, the Mooney Valley Racing Club!!!  And they are Australians?
I reckon the New Zealand on Air bean counters would have been astonished at the costs involved in filming this programme.  To cut costs they used Ellerslie rather than Flemington.  It is tough doing a film involving racehorses.  It is because they are so very unpredictable that we like them so much.
The actress who played Mrs Lupton was very good.

    Enjoyed it.....gotta remember it wasn't a Hollywood budget !
And it was early 80's....a farm horse from a small country town going on to win the Melbourne Cup.
5 years day to day drama /farm life put into 80 minutes !
Not as historical as Phar Lap or National Velvet but kinda similar !.....or Richie McCaw or Billie Elliot !
Well done on a low budget !!!

I think you should put in a ROP in at the start then all involved get a slice of the pie especially if your ROP is a decent amount. You can’t expect to lease a horse out for a 3 /4 year period  and have your syndicate members paying the costs then selling from underneath them.Hope you get a great offer mate and you all share in the profit as your mates have bought into the dream as well .Good luck.

It’s pretty simple. You can’t sell the horse during the term of the lease UNLESS you come to commercial terms with the lessee’s.
Practically you would need to “buy” them out using part of the sale proceeds.

I don't understand this nonsensical crap about branding this horse as "an average son of FR" ????
Mongolian Falcon is  a G2 winner of 3 races and was in the first 3 in 7 of 9 starts. His only 2 misses were after receiving severe interference in a 2YO G1 race and then being injured in the 2000 Gns (but still running 6th). His 2 stakes placings were behind 2 individual G1 winners. By simple definition that record easily places him in the top 1% of the racing population of his generation and makes him an "elite athlete" and well deserving of an opportunity at stud. Personally I'm surprised he hasn't found a home in the North Island.
La Zip you are indeed entitled to your opinion but without any factual or logical basis to them its unlikely anyone with common sense will pay any heed. At $3000 he is sensational value and I hope he gets plenty of mares.

Some of the Luminaries (sarc) were  Half Century, Happy Melody, High Ice, Jigg's Alarm, Keitel, Lucky Ring, Minstrel Blues, Northerly Native, Pin Puller, Royal Loch, Shannon, Shifnal Prince, Silver Prospector, Space Appeal, Trubisc, Voyager, Wham, Young Runaway, Archimedes, Blazing Keel, Blue Razor, Concert Dancer, Conquistarose, Defecting Dancer,  Destroyer and  Exattic.
Interesting that few if any of those names are in any way memorable, at best 1 or 2 may have been handy sires, the rest less so. You would have to look hard to find many of them in a pedigree today.
Food for thought when comparing to some at stud today.

I don't begrudge anyone willing to stand a stallion or send a mare to stud best of luck to them.
No ones holding a gun to ya head to send a mare, sane was said about Eighth Wonder and many others ,  I kind of like this guy's pedigree admittedly it's gonna be hard work getting numbers.

Fair point on data but.....   I would suggest a much more competitive stallion market now, lack of truly dominant stallions (Snitzel the exception last couple of years, amazing seasons!), as well as the concept of shuttling stallions taking off more, another factor to take into consideration is that these top Australian stallions are serving 200-220 mares a season!, very hard to compete with that especially at distances 1600m and below.
Savabeel has sired G1 winners of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Vinery Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Queensland Oaks, Victoria Derby, Champagne Stakes, Queensland Derby so doing a very good job in Australia and all at a distance of at least 1600m.
Other stats in Australia are 70% winners to runners and 8.2 stakes winners to runners, the game and the stallion market has changed so much since Sir Tristram's days, but does emphaisse what a remarkable job these stallions from the same line have done! )through in Lonhro now and Pierro into the future)

Judging by the table presented after all the expenses Mr Myers most likely still lost money, but that is not the point.Never mind the pedigree, if you go and look at all his animals, and the same for Waikato Stud, you will notice that they all have a reason for being there. These are mostly horses that will not make it into the K1 or K2 sale. So they quit them and put time and effort into the good ones. That is not to say that one can not pick up a bargain. I think the best buy of the entire sale was Sir P buying back his own broodmare for $150K. Will end up being a bargain.

We arent talking about a high profile stallion entering a major stud here! , and im not advocating he would be a success at all , just applauding that breeders have an opportunity on a cheap stallion that has some credentials.
No mention of South Island programming/racing etc, conpletely different topic.
A group winning son of Fastnet Rock out of a Galileo mare from a good family that has form around true G1 horses.
He is standing for $3,000 in the South Island!, South Island breeders dont have access to high profile stallions and are unlikely to, this guy gives a good option at the price especially for breed to racers.
It’s a good thing for the breeders that these options are standing in the South Island, choice is good for breeders and after the initial success from standing in the South Island of Highly Recommended , this new stallion may have some appeal to some.

I thought I had seen some insane comments on this forum in the past but this takes the cake. No one with any idea of breeding or racing would bag a G2 winning son of Fastnet going to stud.
Based on Arions results in Aus there are 10 sons of FR at stud which have had runners. With FR's oldest 'grandchildren' being 5YO's no less than 5 of the 10 have sired G1 winners and 3 more have sired SW's. So thats 80% of his sire sons with runners already proving themselves as superior to the norm.
I would say MF is a real chance could well be another Highly Recommended.

So Ellerslie is going ahead with a 1/2 arsed drainage job instead of installing a Strathayr track like Moonee Valley?
Surely they should be told to wait for the Messara report before doing anything? Whatever they do now is likely to be a waste of time and money.
The hardest thing for the industry to swallow will be if he recommends significant racetrack centralisation. If he does do that then it’s essential for Ellerslie to be Strathayr or similar.

That Ellerslie are doing this work now without regard to the needs of the wider galloping code is symptomatic of the problems within racing.
Like it or not this is the premier track in NZ and they should be installing a Strathayr track or similar. Ellerslie needs to be in a position to race every 2nd weekend and it’s unlikely this work will achieve this.
