  1. What's the latest? I take it the money didn't arrive in his account? Was the guy from Matamata in on it? Why aren't the media following this up?
  2. Perhaps you guys are right. It does sound a bit fishy, on reflection. Think I will remain neutral and see what develops
  3. I wouldn't be too sure. If it's a sham, why would they invite the winner to Auckland for a press conference and leave them open to scrutiny by the press? They say the money will be in his account on Friday, so we will know soon enough. They have made themselves known, so I guess they'll be arrested if not legit. These casinos have millions of players worldwide, so it's not inconceivable that they can afford such a payout, and the legit ones are heavily scrutinised by the US govt. I agree though that people shouldn't get sucked in. Online casinos can send you bankrupt in a short amount of time. 99% of players lose, long term.
  4. Nevertheless, there were races designated Group 1, at the time, as evidenced by the DB Racing Annuals, so that's probably good enough for the purposes of the list (as also as it was for the Century of Champions book, which appears as a well researched and respected tome). So I think I'll go with that and add an explanation to the top of the list.
  5. In 'A Century of Champions' by Mark Taylor, he lists La Mer's Group 1 wins. He places an asterisk next to her Manawatu Sires Produce win of 1976 and states 'Asterisk indicates races with unofficial group status. Official Group ratings were introduced to New Zealand in August 1977 and Australia in August 1979'. Leggy, do you have info to the contrary?
  6. Are you sure? Mark Taylor's Century of Champions book says it was 1977?? And under Uncle Remus' record he lists his Group 1, 2, 3 and Listed victories from 1977-78.
  7. Copper Belt won the '78 Lion Brown Sprint, the 77 Captain Cook Stakes and the 78 Thorndon Mile. Don't know how many of those were Group 1's at the time? After research, Good Lord doesn't qualify because the major race he won in the US wasn't a Group 1 at the time.
  8. Been doing some research on Arbre Chene. Very interesting. It's victory in the 1980 Air NZ Stakes was courtesy of a great ride by Lester Piggot.when they beat Blue Rula in a ding donger. Arbre Chene also won the 79 Memsie Stakes in Melbourne, taking its total to 4 Group 1s, so qualifies for both the domestic and international list. Its trainer Peter Cathro was killed in a horse kicking incident.
  9. Some I have been researching : Arbre Chene won the 79 Telegraph, the 80 Railway and the 80 Air NZ Stakes. So that looks like 3 Group 1s for the domestic list. Shivaree won the 81 Easter Handicap Ellerslie, Tancred and QE II in Oz, so thats 3 for the International list, maybe there's one more somewhere. Happy Union won the 76 NZ St Leger (which I think may have been a G1 in the late 70s, plus the 77 and 78 Avondale Cup's, which I think were also Group 1s. Need to check this further. Good Lord won the 77 and 78 Wellington Cups (Group 1s) and the 79 Sydney Cup, then he went to the USA where he won 2 races worth about $150k in total, so at least one of these may have been a Group 1.
  10. Was looking at that. Don't think the Aussies introduced group racing until 1979? NZ was 1977 I think. So most of Balmerino's wins were before this.
  11. Somehow I doubt the Wanganui Guineas was a Group 1 seeing as it was worth only $10k. Must be an error by nzracing. Therefore with only 3 Australian Group 1s, Prince Majestic doesn't qualify for the International list, which is a minimum of 4.
  12. Yes, if we include Doriemus, we would have to include the many other NZ breds, including his arch rival Might And Power, although at least Doriemus had a couple of wins here first, I guess. The criteria is a NZ Group 1 win (which qualifies Happyanunoit) OR NZ trained (Ethereal, Dundeal).
  13. G White, New Plymouth D Couchman, Hawera E Skelton, Otaki I presume this is correct?
  14. Arbre Chene won a Telegraph, a Railway and an Air NZ Stakes in the late seventies, but I'm unsure if the later was a Group 1?
  15. Do you have the training venues for these Ted? How many did Prince Majestic win?

  17. That's right. The International list includes any Group 1 of a New Zealand horse. So this includes Group 1's in NZ. For example, Seachange won 7 Group 1's, all in NZ, so also makes the International list with that 7 tally.
  18. I mean also include those that are NZ trained throughout, so this will allow both Dundeel and Ethereal.
  19. Have decided to include those that are NZ trained throughout. But this will make things murkier as to what horses to include, I fear. Thanks for Poetic Prince.
  20. That's true, but she didn't win one in NZ. I felt I had to draw the line somewhere. Perhaps I drew it too far up and should add in horses if they were NZ trained throughout? I don't think Grey Way won any Group 1s as such because he was around before they were introduced. But I stand corrected.
  21. Hi, if anyone can help add to this list, I would appreciate it. The NZ Group system was introduced in 1977. The criteria for the International List is that the horse has had at least 1 NZ Group One win, and was trained in NZ at the time, and at least 4 G1 wins. For the NZ list, the only criteria is at least 3 G1 wins in New Zealand. Some possibilities I have thought of for both lists are as follows : Copper Belt, Balmerino, Silver Nymph, Arbre Chene, Tudor Light, Vice Regal, March Legend, Princess Patrice, Tang, Shifnal Chief, Good Lord. Some of these may have been prominent before Group racing started.
