  1. How do I pick up new channels?

In most cases, you don't need to do anything at all.

Your TV, set-top box or PVR with Freeview should automatically update if left in Stand-by mode overnight, so the next time you switch it on, you'll find the new channel.

Just use your remote to switch off your TV to leave it in Stand-by mode.

A quick tip: some TVs will display an onscreen pop-up asking you to accept an update, please select to accept the update if you're prompted.

What if my TV/box didn't update automatically?

A re-tune should update it and pick up the new channel.

To re-tune, look for Tuning, Digital Tuning or Auto-tuning in Settings/Menu on your TV/box. Check out our Guide to Tuning for general tips.

I think that is a silly question Barry but if I was a Funeral Director, I would say the sky is the limit.

Do you think NZ should have prohibition looking at these stats?

Ministry of Transport data flags alcohol/drugs as a strong contender for “worst offender” when it comes to road deaths.

Between 2018 and 2020, alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in 44% of fatal crashes.

I think that's a silly question Lee & one that I am not interested in responding too.

To say Zero road toll would equate to saying no person will ever die of cancer again or have a heart attack.

We must never forget the closure of Lunatic Asylum's was because everyone was sane.

And All injuries are preventable plan was brilliant until the horse that bolted and tossed the jockey said he didn't understand it was preventable.

So tell us what is the acceptable number of road deaths a year then?.

What would you be happy with?.

  4. The Zero road toll thinking comes from standard Health & Safety practice worldwide.

Whist we all know that goal is unlikely, it comunicates that no accident or injury is acceptable, the theory is good, just was piss poorly delivered.

Many workplaces in NZ have an All Injuries Are Preventable plan, it’s about creating a belief that it’s possible so that people take responsibility for themselves.  Then it sits alongside a personal responsibility plan for when things go wrong, like a 3 strikes policy.

So completely launching a TAB app and running the visuals (assuming data availability) while driving?   If its as simple as that, the TAB could do the same thing for minimal costs via the usual medium.

I hope more people have been signed up to this exchange.  It appears you may not be a representative spokesperson for the majority...?

Luckily we are all allowed differing opinions & mine happens to be thinking to future & positioning for more young people being engaged in the sport, I don't think you do that by investing in Radio at the expense of mobile technology, if the industry was flush with funds then yeah sure, but its not.

If you were in charge of a finite budget for technology & marketing, would you invest in restarting racing radio or upgrading the app & website?.

Anyhow back to one of the points Insider made earlier regarding listening on the car radio while driving...  Interested to know Barry what modern day system you expect the "dinosaurs" to replace this scenario?

Its called Bluetooth, its been around for a fair while now, I don't have any issues with linking Trackside to it.

I don't see the issue with NEDS. Entain said from the start that they intended or were considering launching another brand, probably aimed at a younger market. Seemed like a good idea to me.A way of creating a wagering front that sheds the anachronistic image of the TAB.

Yes exactly the feedback I gave them on it, it would remove bad conotations associated with the TAB to a younger or less accepting audience.

Since when did you become the self appointed "expert" on punting and the TAB???

If you want to see whingers and moaners maybe you should go to the other smaller sites you seem to frequent more often than here where we are the leading Industry discussion forum.

No one said I was self appointed on anything, expressing an opinion & encouraging open debate is what its about surely?.

& don't worry I hold the Whingers & Moaners at other sites to account as well, I posted this information here because I thought being the leading discussion forum that you might be interested to know this is going on in the background.

Barry could you be a little bit more specific? Let's talk the Mobile App. What improvement would you like to see there?

The layout of it for a start, its largely unchanged for years, its slow & cumbersome.

Go on course & see how many regardless of age are now betting via the App, that's where you need to invest for advancement, not in Radio that no one under 60 cares about.

Agree who wants to be farting round with their phone switching from screen to screen to window. Then there is no signal no battery. No charger. Eff that. I’ve got the Raceform. with scratchings marked off. Something to write my musings on.
Going into the races today. Turn radio on and listen to the first races if I’m running late. Nah I prefer old style.
Go to Ozi and see how many race publications they have. Heaps. Every Saturday I was up at 6.30 to listen to Benz and Duff. And who is more progressive in the punting stakes. Not us for sure.

Keep the BBs away from the decision making

Yeah & look at what % of Aus population is interested in Racing its significantly advanced of ours, here no one even cares if racing is on or not & you want it on a loss producing system like radio & in the newspapers that are out of date. Wow.

  11. The fact you can post on this site suggests you are more than capable of adopting new things, you can still be old and use social media & a mobile phone.

The unwillingness of a small vocal minority (thinking they speak for everyone) to want to progress the industry into the 21st century is sad & shows a short term  thinking methodology that has handbraked the industry for yrs.

  12. & don’t worry, I will strongly be encouraging them to not fund those things, focus on the website, mobile app, enhancing some of the products and creating new ones, along with better form information.

    Sounds great doesn’t it.

  13. & on the radio front, that’s a dead duck, not enough are interested to make it economic, let it go as well.

Time and effort are better spent on improving other things than trying to appease a small group that struggle with change.

  14. Correct you are living in the past, you wasted good betting money on a publication that’s dated before it’s printed.

Tallied up over 12 months it’s $500,  doesn’t seem that smart when better and more up to date info is around for free on your phone or tablet. Let go of the dinosaurs and embrace change, it’s not that scary.

Is that meant to reassure us? 😊

Not at all, everyone has different opinions, yours are no more correct than mine.

What it tells you though is I am not afraid to say mine and I am a staunch thoroughbred supporter,

I am happy to consider new ideas and not live in the past of racing radio and print media, progress often upsets many in the journey, but the way they are going about it this time is great.

    How do you get involved?

Do you have to be invited by the TAB?

If you are involved, have you offered a suggestion on what to do or how to do it with the old Trackside Radio frequencies which they have bought back?

    Liz

It was an invite only thing & No with regard to radio, its a dinosaur I am afraid & soon to be defunct as a medium, like print media.

Better energy spent getting the internet sorted & mobile app updated.

  17. Don't think I can recall anyone mentioning this on here.

IS anyone else on this site taking part in the TAB Exchange?.

For those unaware, its a small selected group whom are helping frame what the TAB will do & look like in the future, they are coming up with some great ideas & some rather shit ones as well.

They have a discussion forum & also send out weekly things for us to rate & score, plus provide other ideas.

Don't fear I have been very clear on what I think works & want to stay, plus what they should do differently.

The current one this week was a look at a new tag line & approach to advertising, it looks ok but my comments were that its targeted too much toward those under 30 & ignores those of us whom have kept them afloat for donkeys years. Yes it had plenty of race content.

  18. Warm day in the sun & the booze was flowing bigtime.

I don’t have any issues with drinking at the races, but when from about race 3 no one in the crowd could hear the commentary due to the level of pissed patrons yelling it was beyond annoying.

In fact many were beyond pissed but completely f—ked off their heads, host responsibility was not evident today that’s for sure. It was the worst I have ever seen it at TR except for Cup day in Dec.

I hear there was broken glass every where in the public area with a few drunken hoons letting loose late  in the day.
