What a difference a week makes. The Auckland Club produced the best track on Sunday I have seen for quite some time. The times run shows most dogs running 7 - 10 lengths faster. I see the previous week that from the two qualy trials run, 9 dogs, only 1 in the 1st and 3 in the 2nd qualified. On Sunday 3 of the dogs that failed previously came back and were successful. A dog that ran 19.43 improved to 18.96 and another from 19.63 to 18.85.

It's obviously a bone of contention for lots of people what's the best age to start racing dogs.
I'm preparing to leave Oz next week so yesterday we had to have our old racer now family pet inoculated so we could bring him home to NZ with us.
After reading this post we decided to ask our vet here in Victoria of his opinion during our appointment.
Michael Bell is considered here the doyen of greyhound vets not only in Victoria but Australia wide.
His clients include the Daily's Bravo's Britton's & nearly every top kennel in Vic West of the Yarra river.
Michael is also the on course vet for the The Meadows
He owns & operates the Craigieburn Vet Hospital.
    He's a master surgeon.
When told of this discussion taking place back home he was completely dumbstruck!
He was in disbelief trainers were allowed to start dogs at such a young age in the first place.
As is written in the post dogs are not permitted to start there careers until they reach sixteen months of age here in Victoria.
Michael said there's a petition circulating that the GRV will soon raise the age to eighteen months!
The biggest concern for Michael was the skeletal structure of a dog so young running around a corner at full speed.
The pressure on there undeveloped bodies he said is a grave concern for there future.
He commented tracks in this era are not like those of days gone by.
Where the exception could do the impossible & get away with it.
Tracks these days are prepared for speed that's the biggest problem for any young pup.
Also he couldn't understand why the controlling body hadn't set aside guidelines in this contentious issue.
I for one will adhere to his free advice & when the time arises my future racing will commence after eighteen months has surpassed.
As for those who disagree that's your prerogative & I wish you well.

Raced yesterday at Addington. Parading to the 520 boxes my dog did a jobby right on the finish line. There it lay in all its glory throughout the race. At the conclusion of the race when walking back to retrieve our dogs, one had to be careful not to step in it. Miraculously it had survived all 8 dogs going over it 2 times. It got me wondering, now whats going to happen to the jobby, so thought i would watch. The answer was soon forthcoming in the shape of a tractor towing a mat behind it. Yes you guessed it, straight over the top, end of jobby.
Now some of you probably do not consider this a big deal. But there are people in the Greyhound code that do wash, and make an attempt at personal hygiene, i being one, and i take offense at this sort of filthy behaviour and culture that is displayed by not actively picking up this offensive matter. Clubs are ramming down our throats" Health and Safety" at every turn, including Drug testing of LP's under the guise of its a "Safety Sensitive" activity. I consider a track that has stools mulched back into the sand a serious health issue, not only for humans, but also the dogs eye's.
I am not blaming the Starter or Parade Steward, they are only doing what they are told. The Club have a policy unlike any other Club in Australasia. That is, its beneath their dignity for the Parade Steward or Starter to been seen carrying a bucket and shovel, and they leave stools on the track if they are not near the boxes. Then after the race is run, the person driving the tractor is supposed to stop and pick up the offending matter. Well it didn't happen yesterday, and i suspect a good portion just get mulched into the track. They then apply water, and spread the contamination far and wide. Over a period of time, it can only get worse. This is a serious health hazard to my way of thinking. The track surface is yours and mine workplace.

GOM, the current downgrading rule is one of the problems, inasmuch that dogs drop down the grades so much faster than before. It is now actually easier to "arrange"  a downgrade as the third start after two misses is not hard to get so nom for the shorter or longer distance etc.
The big problem that has developed with this change has been the demise of C5 dogs and even C4. Dogs are just not staying up in these grades as they use to. I can remember when C5 dogs sat at home because they couldn't get a start. Now it's because there is no race.

Something has to be done in the North with the way races are compiled. Noms continually reopened yet dogs are being left out - you hear it from trainers every week. I know of three trainers in the past two weeks who have nominated 5 or 6 dogs but have been only get one or two in yet there's hardly any races on those cards. Most of those missing out are quality higher (above C1) grade dogs. What's the point of having them and every time a meeting goes by without those grades being drawn then there's no dogs advancing up the grades.
Rules need to be changed to allow races grades to be combined whenever necessary particularly in regards to middle distance and staying races and remove the ridiculous clause where full fields etc. plus reserves need to be drawn. Allow 7 dog fields in sprint/middle distance and 6 dogs fields in staying events and we might just save the industry in the North.

Hi Craig, that won't be a problem. Generally the track is acceptable and this was a one of as a result of holding Polyfest at the venue. Having said that I believe the club does not follow the advice given last year by the track manager from Sandown. That was the track never be left to dry out, must be watered continuously, and when turned must be done down to 100 mm deep. Then properly compacted and the correct water levels maintained down to 100 mm. Our track dried out over the festival and then turned  down probably 50 mm or so and they tried to compact the dry sand before adding some water.

Hi jimbob not an unreasonable request by any means!
This industry needs your fifty bucks & anymore you can spare.
I'm sure more people would be encouraged to invest on greyhound racing if given the right tools to study form.
In this day & age video assistance in doing form is an essential part of studying race form in general.
I say this as both owner & punter of greyhounds.
How hard is it to upload a race once it's run?
Being unfamiliar with the workings of social media & the likes of Facebook & co but isn't there uploads immediate to the Internet?
Does it mean someone within NZGR needs to be designated to get this up & running?
It's my opinion the availability of replays is now an essential & vital part of the punt!
Tell me who doesn't want to know the racing traits of dogs drawn either side of your own charge for me I need to know do they go right or left do they run off at the turn or cut back in.
Three days to get a replay up is just unacceptable in 2017.

John, one of the dogs I refer to recently ran 3rd in the Auckland Cup Final and is as fit as a buck rat. We also saw  a dog like Multicam Ranger turning for home a good 6 lengths in front and only hanging on to win by a half head in 31.75. This being 15 lengths slower than he normally runs.

The Auckland track yesterday was totally unprepared in many ways and in my opinion was unsafe and should not have been raced on. No there were not many major injuries but there were many dogs that came off in an exhausted and stressed state. If we had got "any" of the predicted rain for the weekend, even a decent 30 minute shower, the racing would have been abandoned.
I handled a dog in race 8 and caught a dog in race 11, had a good look several times, and spoke to other trainers. The top 40mm of track was very soft and shifty and below that quite firm. When dressing the track between races, in the home straight there were many foot holes 40mm deep that were not being refilled by the mat. If you watch the replays of the 527 races as the field comes round into the straight you will see the dogs throwing up a trail of sand similar to that of horses running on a heavy 12 track.
You only need to look at the times being run for the 527m races. C0 won in 31.97, C1s 31.75 & 31.40, and the C2 31.42. Only the winners of the C2 and 1/C1, only 2 dogs out of 4 races, beat the required qualifying time for unraced unqualified dogs of 31.50 sec. All the rest would have failed to qualify.

The track condition at Auckland left something to be desired. The surface was far too loose, and therefore made it very hard for the dogs to get a hold of it.
The times tell the tale, as the 527m Maiden was run in 31.97. None of these dogs would have qualified on that time. I don't know how to better the condition, but am of the opinion, that since the re-surfacing the track has taken a turn for the worse.

Surely with the 3 misses then downgrade means dogs at the top are dropping quicker than before. Therefore dogs in C5 are dropping quicker than before leaving the open class ranks weak in numbers. It then follows that it will be harder to get open class races. The same applies to C4, C3, C2, hence the reason there is a glut of C1 dogs. Very predictable to my mind. Its why we had 4 misses in the first place. You start tinkering with time proven systems and you reap the chaos that we now find ourselves in.

GOM, what you say is true, but, I should have qualified my comments as I was only talking about middle distance races not sprints. At present middle distance C5 and/or C4 races  often do not exist at many meetings.
Your question could also be asked of what happens to the huge number of class one winners each week. Why are they not clogging up the C2 fields. Are they passed by the huge number of dogs going down the grades.

I have read the Grading Advisory, re-read it, and read it again. I am shocked with the interpretation and believe it is a spiel to justify and respond to inquiries as to how the Association has allowed the dog "Hypocritical" to accumulate 5 wins and 2 thirds in C1. In addition to the 2 wins in C0 the dog has had 9 starts over 35 days for 7 wins and 2 3rds,
I believe that in the past dogs have been regraded for every win and that misses in both the heat and a final (say 4th in both) have counted as two losses for downgrading. Surely, say if the "series" has 4 heats then we have 4 winners to be regraded, but assuming one of these dogs wins the final then this must be more relevant than just a heat win deserving added penalty.
In the case of the above dog every additional start in the Grade not only prevents another dog a start but also denies the trainer and connections of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th dog the prize money they would have earned. This must be a classic example of why the "running out nom's" rule needs urgent revision.

Good point Gordy, it is a double edge sword. One lot are calling for all the old fogeys from the 'old boys club' to go as they have had their day and stuffed it up while the rest are saying anyone who has not won a silver collar and an Auckland cup has no right to comment. The truth as usual is somewhere between.
Anyone has the right to comment though and often it takes a new approach to see the obvious.
Slim is an example, though hardly inexperienced his idea of two wins in class0, if there has to be two wins is brilliant and would immediately improve the class 1 backlog yet it is so obvious why hasn't somone thought of it before.
I do agree with you about about not downgrading below c1. At the moment in NZ you can have a young  one with little experience win one race and at its next start come up against a dog who has won over $100,000 and had 80 starts, not good. Mind you surely we would have the bottlenck just up a grade.
Alltheway your comment about a dog who fails to run in the money 4 times needs retiring was not well thought out. What say is a wide runner or railer getting adverse box's surely it should get the chance to have things in its favour before it is written off.. What about a dog that has had bad luck and lost it's confidence surely it should be given a chance at rehabilitation.
