I think some people buy two or three horses at the $20-$60K mark knowing that if they get one right, it can still be a profitable transaction after all. If they get 2 right they are well ahead, 3 right and in clover.
So I think the overall purchases have to be looked at. Hence Wexford also purchased Molly Bloom from the same sale.

Thanks Leggy for this. I was referring more to the fact that whips are used in most riding disciplines, it is just horse racing that is on TV makes an easier target.
No overarm I can understand.
If the animal groups want animal cruelty it is not in racing that it will be found at large. The amount of dogs and cats being bred (sold on social media) for people that would not know how to look after a toy is frightening....

Was watching this old famous ad recently. There is reference here to pulling the beast out of the swap and things have gone wrong.....this could not be shown now for cruelty reasons. People are too far removed from the farm nowadays and don't understand dealing and living with livestock.

People are getting too far removed from the farm to educate nowadays. Animal experience and education is done by social media now.

If anyone thinks removing the whip from racing will appease the animal activists they are sadly mistaken. The animals activists will not stop till racing is stopped, they get more removed from reality everyday.
I personally would not give them any oxygen.

A lot of amateurs are just not smaller enough to be professional jockeys. I just looked at tomorrows riders in the amateur and the are a good bunch of riders. Its a good race and well worth its place. I would rather punt on this race and the riding than some of the midweek south island stuff.

The problem is the self service terminals are dinosaurs. If they were modern and could be updated regularly then the cost of them in a lot of pubs would be minimal.

Oncourse bookmakers is a dying game. The ones in oz/UK do it because they have been doing it for years or is a family business. A day out. They lay off on betfair etc,

I think this is very good. Looked after lower level and like the way prize money is less in winter when there is less punting.

There is no way they are going to release anything but good news at NZB the day before a sale. Stake rises across the board. Minimum stakes to get close to $20K and all group races etc raised significantly.

The cost of keeping a horse to a be a 5yo plus open horse is add up over 4 seasons. Expensive to keep.
If real promising as a 2-3yo the money is too good to turn down so sold.
Hence we have no depth in open company. Te Akau's model can afford to keep them going.
