Very, very sad.  Apparently something has been found in a vet check prior to her heading out for a spell, which meant she couldn't race again.  Another sad note is that Berri won't be able to give Opie Bosson his 100th Group 1 Win like he hoped she would. Was looking forward to seeing Berri race again next season, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be.

Probably found a broodmare valuation in her vet check........

She was a cracker of a racehorse.

We are miles behind those disciplines on this.

At an appropriate time, namely when the horse is reluctant to go forward under normal aids of seat and legs. In the right place, namely down the shoulder or behind the leg but never overarm. With appropriate severity. No more than twice for any one incident.

Seen a lot of dressage horses try perfectly hard without one.

Thanks Leggy for this.  I was referring more to the fact that whips are used in most riding disciplines, it is just horse racing that is on TV makes an easier target.

    No overarm I can understand.

If the animal groups want animal cruelty it is not in racing that it will be found at large.    The amount of dogs and cats being bred (sold on social media) for people that would not know how to look after a toy is frightening....

  4. Was watching this old famous ad recently.  There is reference here to pulling the beast out of the swap and things have gone wrong.....this could not be shown now for cruelty reasons.  People are too far removed from the farm nowadays and don't understand dealing and living with livestock.

You can use all the analogies and comparisons you like but I think we're generally agreed that the use of whips in NZ racing has a limited life, tb or harness.

Eventing, Cross country, pony club too?  Whips are all the way through the game.

To me its the name "whip" that is wrong.

I think it is the jockey's (and ex jockeys) that should be making this call.......not the animal right groups.

    Just my opinion.

I think you missed the point during the rant where Luke said something along the lines of "for too long we have dismissed these concerns as loopy left wing extremists, but its now the majority of the public".  Evidenced by the political parties taking a stand against the greyhound industry.  They dont do this to appease the activists while pissing off the majority.  Quite the opposite.

Its easy for us to preach to the converted via this forum and racing shows, but unfortunately "not giving them any oxygen" doesnt kill off todays cancel culture.  All the casuals see is a horse getting whipped in an attempt to make it run faster.

I hear you all and understand the argument.  But I just don't think we can go down this road.

People are getting too far removed from the farm to educate nowadays.  Animal experience and education is done by social media now.

Some uncomfortable truths in his rants yesterday.  I did wonder if EB and MG were warned about the topics as they looked a bit surprised by each one haha

I think Emily rightfully wanted to stop his whip rant.

Tayla Mitchell  survived her suspension to win by one win over Ms Kelsie Hannon to win the 2022 -2023 champion Apprentice .

Indentured to her mother, Terresa McDonald, I am just so proud of her.

Her Grandy ( Bruce )was a great mate of mine and taught me so many horse skills.

Bruce moved from Gizzy and " broke in " yearlings on his Cambridge  southern property.

Bruce educated many yearlings who became champions of the Turf.

McGinty was a fiery colt. Small, compact and very stroppy.  But Bruce told the owners not to geld the son of One Pound Sterling

That was so  lucky for  Barny McC    and Keith H . and a young Jillo.

Go well Tayla. Your Grand Dad will be having a ciggy and whiskey.

Something like that would attract punters oncourse for sure. Don't disagree but what's the point? Why not offer to those on their couch as well. Their money is just as good.

Oncourse bookmakers is a dying game.  The ones in oz/UK do it because they have been doing it for years or is a family business.  A day out.  They lay off on betfair etc,
