Statistics will tell you many things, but to get the base line of accuracy, you have to establish the basic detail. Frankel was such a special racehorse that he was always going to get the best opportunity as a stallion, with mares of pedigree depths that we in NZ struggle to comprehend. To use the George phrase……Early doors…..you think you are looking at high class stayers, maybe later maturing types. Breeders recognised what that fella needed and have sent him faster mares, now we have two 2YO’s come out of one breeder in OZ who has a Group 1 winner over a mile and a filly that wins first up tuther day down the Flemington straight and has 3YO written all over the performance. What a fabulous stallion and what a challenging game we breeders play. We all need the best of luck. John

Red, he is also breeder of the family of the impressive 2YO winner at Ellerslie today. I raced the half sister to him and he is has always been a better version at the same age than our mare. He will be a fine 3YO if left to grow into his frame. I hope they can resist the dollars that will come from HK for him.

Stodgy, you have you finger on the pulse, what do you think of the progeny of New Bay? He had a a good 2YO crop but apart from Saffron Beach, there doesn’t seem to be too many up to the better class of race/ You view is appreciated. Cheers John

Tasman, haven’t been involved with Avondale for a few years now, just a member. So no bias at all, a previous Board at Ellerslie sold a lease on some land, not wanted by them, but negating a lease that the Thoroughbred Breeders Head office had on those same grounds. Under the watch of CEO Chris Weaver, forcing NZTBA to sell a building that had been build with the hard work and good support of breeders, for next to nothing. However, that long lease arrangement generated a significant sum, pre paid, to the ARC (of which I was a member at the time) to allow ARC to invest in various areas and provide a significant reserve sum. A good move for the club balance sheet, somewhat disingenuous of the CEO at the time about the TBA Lease, but they have reserves worthy of an educational course to John Allen of RIB fame. Same CEO wanted to sell the hill for commercial purposes, but the pushback was too strong. There is no need to sell the hill, as the reserves are good and the interest return would be extremely poor, so why do it. I struggle to think that they would consider such a move at this time, but then, they are not perhaps as smart as previous boards. I am not longer a member at Auckland Racing Club, only Avondale and the VRC, who do know what they are doing and have done so for a very long time. Cheers John

Pretty dumb really Charlie, the ground undid her as you could see in the running. Same as Rocket Spade. Boss stands up on her at the 200m and should be ashamed......yet he asks why he doesn’t get better rides in Sydney. She is a very good mare, and if the track had been closer to firm, the performance would have been substantially better. The winner and place getters enjoyed a wet shifty track, that is what prevailed today. Look at the race times, on the most part they tell the story. Doncaster, won by a lightweight, in 1.36 ?? Without being disrespectful, the weather changes all the time, so the track managers need more than weekly printouts. I use YR.No, it is a Norwegian website that covers the world and updates every 30 mins. The Norwegians invented Meteorology way back when, so I believe them rather than NIWA and especially not the Trumpies. Try the site, you won’t be disappointed. They showed what would happen at Te AROHA today, and that is why I did not go. Cheers John

Reality check. Many of us that have bred and raced horses for some time have long felt that the incapacity of the RIB and the TAB to sort NZ racing out is so great that we either sell or race in Australia. The nature of DIA involvement as such, (Department Of Internal Affairs), is so embarrassingly stupid and implausible that it is involved so heavily in the decision process that we are disillusioned and we change our ownership positions to suit. We either sell the horses, or most of, and race them in Australia, Why wouldn’t we, can still be a maiden and have returned stakes of $68k Aus, win a race and get to town and have nearly $90K in the gross account. Raced a good mare, wins 5 races and don’t cover her training fees. Jackson Street in Petone don’t understand the the process of racing, The previous Chair didn’t, the previous 3 CEO’s didn’t, and we have now incurred the knowledge of a Minister Of Racing that knows little about economics, let along our industry, but gratefully we should acknowledge, has some advice that there are not the required calibre of the 40 odd applicants to form a board for the TAB. Thank goodness for that I say. A long way to go there, and maybe we are responsible for our destiny. I would’ve loved to have an ear of a parliamentarian (that would listen) over the last decade and we would still have a reserve account balance, Key didn’t listen. But many have previously tried, seem we are unheard. Get some skills on a Board and things happen, but they have to be appropriate skills, with the right expertise and the right decisions will be executed. Forget the DIA, they know nothing about our industry, never have done, but are the fall guys for various political hacks that know nothing about the portfolios they hold. Would you go to a dentist and ask about your liver or hip problem? Ask yourself cheers John

Fizzy, there is a well written story in the TDN on Sat about Mr Abdullah. Probably the best breeder the world has had the pleasure to enjoy his efforts for some decades. The likes of Danehill are one of many impacts he has left to breeders the world over and I think in decades to come, we will fully appreciate the diversity of blood that he created. I have the luck and good fortune to have raced a good mare generations deep in his family and I hope I don’t embarrass myself by not continuing to breed good stock from her. He was truly a master of genetics and a sporting and loyal man enriched with the more honour and and ethics than many in our industry.

Nebula, he continues to provide winners up North, but I think the tracks getting too damp will slow them down. Deep tracks will not deliver too much I suspect. The filly ran well yesterday at Wellington and will improve again I suspect. Athletic types mostly, who should get better into January and Feb, but not sure about getting through to the Sires races. We shall watch with interest, but I like the couple I have in the paddock here at home. Cheers John

Will there ever be a race that starts on time at Riccarton? There hasn’t been one in the last 15 years to my knowledge? Someone may have the record of time lag that impacts on the starters watch at the course. cheers
