What do you mean it's not real grass? Of course it is. Nothing like the synthetic tracks you mention. And with superior drainage to most grass tracks, you'd think it would need more, not less, irrigation.

The grass is obviously not yet well rooted by the way it was chipping out on the turn and shifting underfoot.

Apparently, it was inconsistency in the straight at Hastings. Whether that is due to soil conditions, uneven irrigation or what is hard to say. How it wasn't picked up in the morning inspection or the penetrometer readings is anyone's guess. Following the running of this race a number of riders expressed concern regarding the surface of the track which was described as inconsistent in final straight. A track Safety Review Panel consisting of Stewards and Senior Jockeys was convened. Following a track inspection and a subsequent meeting with all riders and club officials, the remainder of the race meeting was abandoned due to the inconsistencies of the track

That's a fair point if true but hasn't that strip been tested by gallops, jumpouts and trials?

See nothing wrong with a sweepstake, glorified or not. After all that's what slot races are. All the payment and fee details are already there in the published T&Cs.
