Has there been a younger trainer of a group one race in any of the three racing codes in NZ?
Brilliant win by Sam's dog last night at a great price. Went a ripper having his first look at the track the week before and was sure to be improved
    Great effort from all concerned

lA legend in the greyhounds stayers history., Tom will be laid to rest today at TeAwamutu  today. I think if I could convince Peter Jackson to make a movie of the successful saga of the McGillivray success in NZ's best staying races in 1997/98 it would be a box office hit.   There were that many turns and twists and unlikely scenario's it was unbelievable
Rest in peace Tom, a genuine, hard working decent human being. A large loving Whanau will gather around Jill.

Gary you need to take into account when making comments of who the top northern trainers are the likes of the class of dog they have access to either dogs that are bought by owners who can  afford to out lay the dollars or have the breeding set up to produce litters which gives them a better chance of getting good dogs to train. There are a number of trainers in the north who I view do a excellent job with the type of dog they race. Keeping in mind that a number of them are racing 2nd tier dogs from the 2 biggest breeders in NZ. Gary cant undersatnd how you left the Craiks off your list they have been one if not one of the best trainers in the North for the last 30 odd years.
Anyway Gary I fear for the future of the northern region as there are not enough the younger generation taking  it on the costs of land etc to set up is just to much and the money is not there to meet comitments.
Also the board are making far reaching decesions which will come back and bite them in the ass i.e. import fees which I feel they are being leaned on by outside influences.

What it should cost owners for training of a race dog and what it actually cost's are very different. Personally I believe this inconsistency will be what finally drives smaller trainers out of the game. Here's some facts to consider when pondering what you believe is a fair price to pay. I pay $35 a day for my dog that's 1 6th of the size of a greyhound to go to doggy daycare, the hours are strict, drop off after 7am and pick up before 6pm, no food is given, they expect the dogs are feed prior to arriving, they spend the day in a secure paddock with shelter and toys. For $400 a month instead of the $35 day rate I can drop my dog there as many days as I want. Please can someone give me a valid reason as to why a race dog should be any cheaper per day to train for its owners? Bare in mind race dogs are fed twice a day and fed only the very best meat available, often given expensive vitamin supplements, they are also checked over, massaged or ultrasounded if need be, cared for 24hrs day and night and then prepared and transported to the races, all this plus numerous other tasks involved with their care. Greyhound trainers need to band together, if only just once, and agree on a fixed price that you all charge, hey someone will do it cheaper but leave them to it. With the increased stake money available and the fact dogs can race twice a week I think its high time the greyhound code has a go at shrugging that "far cheaper than owning a race horse" belief of its shoulders and gets with the real times. Personally I just want to sit back and watch some of these owners who have taken the piss for years start to exit "stage right" at a great rate of knots!!

I would like to say we were lucky to get a bitch off Gary Caffel called Rosieanna Token, who we mated with Wheres Pedro, we sold all the boys and only kept 2 bitches,
Mustard Keen and Rosieanna Belle, who broke her leg before she had many races, but she showed us how good she was.
So we mated her to Brandeen then to Magic Spike, the litter got over $200k in prize  money .She was 2nd for Dam of the year.
We sold Night Pearl to Tony Potts who put his money where his mouth is.Now she has gone on to be one of NZ best dams, the one that trifected the c5 race  last night, showed it is all about putting the right sire to get the goods.
N Pearls sister, Spot on Maggie only had one litter, and she would have been one that could not win over 457m . But her sister,  well named Bevs Viewpoint  run 457m plus, her pups sprinters only , who is to say that her pups or N Pearl pups can not put 520m on the track. It is all about putting your money in and having a go.

What point are you making here Em? That spiel about dermorphin  is gobbblydegook  to most people and to me just sounds like another opinion albeit an obscure one. I can understand if Earl read this he would grasp at it as a possible alternative delivery route unlikely as it seems.
You are a bit tough on Bev as she is reacting in an understandable manner and Christ would not mind her standing her ground.

I have not posted on here for some time not because i was banned or sick of Racecafe but sick of social media in general but feel compelled to comment on this debacle because it seems so bizzare.
Earl and family have been huge contributors to the industry over many years , have been involved in all aspects including breeding and training very successfully, club participation and helping other trainers on racedays. To my knowledge they have never been invloved in any previous devious behaviour. Bev and I have not always shared the same point of view but I have found the three family members I have met good friendly people
When these charges arose I like many others felt they must have been guilty because of the multiple charges and the fact it is a substance not  common.
However my gut feeling is with the Duganavitches. Firstly when Earl was informed of the positives and asked if he wanted to scratch a dog running that day, he chose to let it run. That would not make sense if he knew it had been juiced. I put myself in the same position and I think I would start it because I knew I ensured it was drug free. Mind you on the other hand I may have started if I had juced it because it would be an admission that I knew it would be positive. I am adamant though that I would not have hesitated to start that day.
So if they did not juice the dogs how did they get the stuff in their systems. For some time now the raging fire in the industry has been the Cole saga. Anyone that was even polite to the Cole kennels has been ridiculed and vilified on social media with some wankers even making threats against ex staff members and those helping the kennel. From the tone of those comments and paticularilly recent ones against Earl it would not been beyond reason that one of the furious social media contributors took supposed retribution. With the poor security arrangements at Wanganui, that cannot be counted out plus the poor security arrangements in raceday carparks leaves huge opportuniy. I know whenever I have had a dog in a group race I will never ever leave it unatended untill it is in the kennells as it would be so easy to nobble an animal at that stage. I only got that paranoid after we had a $2.50 favourite in a big race at Wellington which finished 60 metres last and nearly died on the way home. I requested a swab after the race and was refused. I did not give the dog anything but someone did!!!
A wise old doctor told me once at the beginning of my career "you will only diagnose something if you think of it" That is what is needed here. Think, is it possible Earl did not administer the drug then how else could it have got there.
Bev I believe your family did not do it. I cannot prove that but it is my gut feeling . Unfortunately you cannot prove it either. By the very nature of the system you are guilty untill you can prove you are innocent which is nigh on impossible. You can understand why that is so because everyone cheating hua that gets caught is going to say they didn't give it to the dog
Catch 22 I guess every trainer that takes a dog to the races faces the same possibility.

HI ALL, as you all know we are out of greyhounds.
We got 3 pos before Xmas, so we put in 4 cameras  that covered all our kennels.
we did not think anyone would come in and give our dogs anything. But we had them to cover us.
Now when number 4 happen, we asked if we could have the swab tested for $1200 but only if it was a blind test,we were told no, they have to know what they are looking for.
We asked to look at the tapes in the kennel block at the track.Oh no they only keep them for 2 to 3 weeks as it is on VHS. Now you would think when the RIU get a Pos they would ask the club to keep the tapes.
Now I know the club has spent a lot of money on cameras all over the place But I did not know that the cameras are so old , didn't cover enough  in the kennels and on VHS.
We did not do it. Bev Duganzich
ps  .from now on I only reply to statements or questions from named contributors.

Farewell old mate, one of the good buggers who was just as comfortable talking to the Queen as  a beggar on the street . He did both of those.
Well known and respected in both Islands as a champion breeder and trainer who won most of the group races in NZ often more than once with his small team. He was a tireless worker for the Tokoroa club right from it's beginning and leaves a large legacy in the industry.
I don't think I was ever with Max more than 5 minutes without both of us having a hearty laugh about something. He helped many within the industry especially newcomers

Every time there's an attempt to dictate breeding restrictions from above, NZ breeders get upset about being told what to do by people who know less than them. And rightly so, IMO.
Think of the $2000 (should be $5000) Import Fee as not only a fee to cover the cost of Australian dogs being rehomed in NZ, but also as an obstacle to prevent average Australian dogs coming here in the first place. The fewer imported dogs we have in the local racing population, the more room there is for locally-bred dogs. The more room for locally-bred dogs there is, the fewer restrictions that are needed on NZ breeders. The fewer the restrictions on NZ breeders, the more dogs will be bred locally. The more dogs bred in NZ, the more demand there will be for purpose-built rearing, breaking and pretraining facilities run by experts using world-leading skill and technology, which will lead to better NZ-bred dogs.
If you wanted to tweak the import policy, you could say that c5-winning imports get half their import fee refunded and group placegetters/finalists get the whole lot back. So the best performers can stay in NZ for breeding without being penalised.

Well you are all allowed your opinion. But I think Mark is a very good lure driver. So he made a mistake that's life.
Years ago we had a dog that we scratched ,was given a stand down of 28 days, for not having a valid reason, by the vet at the track, because the vet could not tell it had a hock problem  So we had to take the dog around the corner to M Jenson within the hour. This cost, so we asked the club to pay, they said no. This is before the RIU took over. We did ask M J to show that vet how to check hocks.
