    The report says
Experts consulted by WorkSafe found Malthus was not competent to have been put in charge of a racehorse at the Alfriston training track in July 2016, having been given no formal training, being not riding fit and having only ridden quiet horses and never at a gallop.
I don't know that it will profit us taking this discussion further, best to allow the hearings to reach their conclusion on a fully-informed basis.

The coverage we had at Hastings today for 3 or 4 races after Riccarton was abandoned, and before Aussie kicked off, was the coverage we should be getting of our premier meetings every Saturday.
Was brilliant, 15 mins before the race, crossing live into the mounting yard, getting to watch the horses parade, good build up, and good after race coverage with interviews and so on.

Why cant Trackside 1 be used like this more often, especially when its only the early races at Randwick/Flemington, put those onto Trackside 2.

For all the publicity I've seen, the competition seems to be treated like a dirty secret.
It is on my bucket list to be a starter, some year.  For the hell of it rather than in hope of the $20 grand first prize.
Each year Trackside disappoints with feeble coverage, especially when Aussie racing kicks in.

    Youre kidding right?
That's been done to death and if racing fully subscribes to that mantra its dead and buried in this country.
Ever raced a horse with some of these 18-40yos ? they have they staying power/patience of an Aus breed stayer in the MC , when do they get involved and how at club level cause thats still an integral part of racing in this country.  That's why most of them are suited to those big stable syndicates that stroke their ego, engage in extreme hype, have a handbook of excuses and brush their brow when they enviably realise that not every horse is fast and that they don't win all the time. Yep they'll defintely save the industry .. but I digress.

Apart from the tracks part but if that is what it takes to keep the industry going then so be it. I would love to see on course bookies back and let these tracks that are on the cut list to have stand alone on course meeting, similar to a Bush circuit in Aus.

How ever the final complete story ends out, racing's administration must fire those responsible for the Te Rapa debacle.
As I understand it, this is the situation. As Elerslie was under reconstruction, some of the iconic races were to be run at Te Rapa. In an attempt to improve the Te Rapa track surface, advice was given to apply sand to the track. This begs the question as to who was involved in that consultation process because this is actually where the responsibility chain starts. My understanding is that there was an attempt to improve the track surface not that long ago so why was this latest action necessary?
The decision was to sand slit. This is where slits are cut into the track and sand would be placed into the slits. The theory of this technique is that the sand in the slits drains the water through the slits much quicker as theoretically the water drains through the soil profile and into the nova flow drainage under the track. What of course they don't understand is if you don't do analysis of the soil type and grass types with the rooting profile, the slitting may in fact destroy the stability of the surface and the kick back can be like a Sahara sand storm.
But when you've got mediocre management, from the top down, the best thing you could do to prove your mediocraty is have no one at the track to see the sand arrive, which means no-one was there to check the quality and type of sand (dimensions), and the sand was dumped at a spot that wasn't specified. The sand was spread. It was of poor quality. It's specifications weren't checked, it was spread incorrectly.
The outcome.....all the drains got blocked, a sink hole appeared in the track and a lake that is the next "Noosa" of the Waikato formed that has got the ducks changing their winter plans.
I have been told that the track may not be used for the next 6 months. What the cost to the industry/ jobs/ contracts/ sponsorship's?  Put this together with the debacle of 6 months ago during summer, when on a major race day, the food and beverage ran out (which was substandard in the first place) and that the track has been progressively degraded during the reign of both the current chairman and CEO (who hides in his office during race days) and you've got the targets for the "You're Fired Stakes".
If any member of the NZTR were involved in this debacle, then they should also be in the noms for the same race. Grow some balls leaders. This is simply not acceptable in terms of incompetence and mis management.

I see Sky TV annouces the loss of another 57000 customers this past 12 months, so this  will no doubt be another big chunk  of viewers not viewing trackside. Maybe it is tme the racing board/Tab took it back over again and while doing so go back to the  old format or at least have one channel soley for NZ races. I certainly dont watch it as much as I used to as I am not particularly interested in aussie racing and cannot abide the cutting short of NZ coverage to watch some obscure race in the back blocks of never never land.

Scotch Thistle got a reaction from Leggy in Te Rapa Track...Is it worth the money they spent on it???
Having listened through the interview, I'm encouraged by Rutherford's recognition and admission of the mess Te Rapa is in and the earnest response needed to get things back in order.  This response seems to include flicking off two industry meetings in September to other tracks, and undersewing grass, but meantime having plenty of hooves help to force that sand from the surface into the ground.
A question Coppins (useless interviewer) didn't ask Rutherford is why the club didn't have anyone competent overseeing the work done in February.  Rutherford said the contractor did a "very shoddy job", being supposed to spread 4-6 mm depth of sand across the course, but actually putting on up to 2 inches (i.e. 50mm) in places in a central strip of the track.   50mm is 8 to 12 times the depth of sand supposed to have been laid, so it was indeed a shoddy job.   Clearly the club was incompetent in not noticing and intervening whilst the contractor's shoddy work was in progress.
Follow-up questions Coppins might have asked are whether Te Rapa paid the contractor, is seeking compensation, and has warned other clubs off using the shoddy outfit.

It might help if the distinctions between the different components of the racing industry were clearer to the road worker.  So too the differences between the financial returns to the top players in each component compared to those of the average and the strugglers.
NZTR might be expected to promote understanding of the state of the NZ industry on behalf of those battling to continue participating in it. It is galling when NZTR's Racing Desk runs an article about Rachel Frost relocating to Victoria with a string of horses but doesn't report why she gave up on NZ (Racecafers know, but the average newspaper reader probably wonders given that Winston is supposedly throwing money at the industry).

Scotch Thistle got a reaction from Insider in Interesting Messara report
Reading the article I was struck that there could be substance in some aspects of it, but also that De Lore is off beam, indeed comprehensively ignorant, on some matters he covers.  An example is that he says ... Tabcorp must be favoured over the corporate bookmakers, as the organisation has a vested interest in racing as opposed to the corporates who exist primarily to return a profit to their shareholders ... when anyone with half a brain knows that Tabcorp is as corporate as it gets, being listed on the Australian Stock Exchange!

Strickland cops a lot of stick. Whether or not this is deserving I don't know.  His job is to apply the handicapping policy which NZTR sets .  If the policy is crap, and Strickland had a major say in it, he deserves stick on that account.  Otherwise, so long as Strickland applies the policy diligently, surely he is no more to blame if the policy leads to absurd ratings, than he is deserving of credit if horses run to their ratings.
