Can anyone tell me what criteria are used in doing the order of entry for some of these maiden fields. Take race 2 at Counties tomorrow. How does Sweet Temptation (one start, ran 15 of 15) get in ahead of Tag and Release (one start, ran 4th)?

The racing coverage in the Herald on Sunday is even worse. All they have is the fields for Sunday and Monday. No editorial whatsoever. We were in Sydney last weekend and the Sunday papers had pages of racing stories. Good in depth articles written by people who knew about racing and who know how to write. Nothing about NZ racing of course. It doesn't even exist as far as our Oz cousins go

It would be interesting to know who the petitioning creditor was (ACC, for example?) or whether Harris filed for bankruptcy himself. I would say Harris is just the tip of the iceberg. If trainers like him and Richard Otto, who both have/had the numbers, can't keep their heads above water, how can the rest survive?

We had a horse come down with "thumps" when it raced in Australia and I think it is the same thing as atrial fibrillation. It can be prevented by treading the horse with a calcium drench. It is caused by calcium loss after excessive sweating and is fairly common in Australia. Our boy went on to win about 3 more races after his episode.

Just had a look on the IRD website and gaming duty is 20% of profits. Plus GST. They are raking it in, no wonder they want 500 more machines at Sky City.

The government does incredibly well out of the pokies. They collect gaming duty on the turnover (10% I think) plus GST of 15% on turnover. Not a bad little earner for them, in these tough times.

Horses do not know what their breeding is. There have been many top horses with nothing whatsoever in their pedigree to suggest they may be good. Others with pedigrees to die for can't even run fast enough to keep warm.

Just had a look at the first 4 horses in the Derby and they all have Zabeel up front in their pedigrees. Brambles is by Savabeel, Quintessential's sire Fast 'n' Famous is out of a Zabeel mare, Westsouthwest is by Darci Brahma who is out of a Zabeel mare and Tohunga is by Zabeel. Amazing.
