I don't find it bizarre. A lot of hobby owner/trainers in the South want to have the thrill of watching their horses go round. Traveling horses/people to and from Auckland is expensive which the top echelon can afford . The reason harness is strong in the South is strong, it hasn't lost sight of its grassroots connection.

With his lack of gate speed i couldn't see Got The Chocolates heading to Australia,  John and the team have been working on it and it has improved but you couldn't take on the Aussies and give them a head start, but never say never. 

I think a better indicator of lack of sponsorship would be lack off a salesperson out getting it. The trick is to reward the sponsors with recognition along with hospitality but not spending more on the hospitality than income you are generating.

Absolutely agree Nigel, and a $20,000 bonus for the first win.
I am sure most owners, if not all, would rather see the top end stakes reduced, and if the Cup was reduced to say $200,000, along with all the other top stakes races.
Having had a runner placed in the N.Z.Cup, which is race everyone wants to win, and regardless of the stake, the honour of owning a Cup winner is high in every owners bucket list.
Realistically, as owners, we are wrapped if our horse qualifies, then can win a race, and knowing generally, that we are never going to be ahead of what we have put in, but it is our passion, and the hope that we might one day get a good one, and so we optimistically keep searching.

The coverage provided by Brittany and Greg over the carnival was a masterclass on how to do this stuff right. On how to engage the viewer, both the hardened race fan and the casual or newcomer and introduce the human or family element of the sport (industry).
No waffle, no pretension simply professionals doing an outstanding job in presenting our sport in the best possible manner. Not only trainers, jockeys, drivers, owners and handlers but far more. Greg's interview with I think it was the Dixon family, mum and the three boys was media at its very best.
Trackside would do well to use snippets of Brittany and Greg to train its other course and studio presenters on the subtleties of excellence and the huge difference that makes, not only on key industry days but on every day they are entrusted to cover.

Yeah wasn't it great that he actually said exactly what he was thinking, he should be on  unhinged uncensored.

Didn't put much on 100ew , I always wondered why owners don't back their own horse's much but I've learned that money can make you disappointed when you run a good race but not in the money so in short if I'm having a real go it's very really on anything I part own.

I think a bigger problem is that re ratings have been published very badly the above horse was dropped from rating 46 to 40 unless you go looking for it how would you know  , it's not in the race book.
