  1. The race should have been run and the horse or horses disadvantaged should have been late scratchings. There were two stuff ups. The early start and then declaring a false start. A very trigger happy starter?
  2. Brittany was great. BP looked liked he was grazing on a good paddock over Christmas
  3. There was a better effort. Abre Chene ran in the Avondale Cup mid December 1979 over 2,200 and won the railway 01 Jan 1980. This was a two week freshen up dropping from 2200 to 1200 mtrs I was on course and got the $8.00 odd dividend. The winner today ran several months after the derby. Abre Chene went on to win the the Air NZ stakes ridden by Lester Piggot in 1980.
  4. As another example I was watching the buildup to the VRC OAKS on Thursday. I was really enjoying the parade, the comments from experts and the atmosphere. All of a sudden, we cross to a provincial pacing race and had to watch pacers go around and around a greyhound track. We then cross back and we are just short of start time. Very off putting.
  5. Do we know for sure that The TAB-Entain Insured the competition? If so great but if not $10,000,000 out the window is something that they cannot afford.
  6. I think he is a great young rider. He rides as well as most of our senior riders and you get the benefit of his claim.
  7. A difficult situation. Some of Wiremu Pinn's winning rides were by a margin and had he been claiming 2 kg they would have still won. The connections of the second horses have received a hollow victory. They did not see their horse win, missed out on a bet, not much fun watching a replay of your horse running second and the horse has probably gone up a grade and may not be competitive.
  8. Tauranga abandoned their meeting based on track conditions at the time and the weather forecast which was for a lot of rain. The rain has not come and it is likely the races could have been held at Tauranga. What do you do?
  9. I think with raft of scratchings that meeting may not go ahead. A lot of winter gallopers accepted for Tauranga would be outpaced on synthetic track. Should have urgently drawn new fields with those accepted given first option to start
  10. If you all want to talk about tired facilities, have you been to Hastings racecourse? Great spring track and the parade ring is good but facilities are crap.
  11. Great winter track yesterday that played fair for all horses. Industry needs Avondale as a winter track and a trial venue. Who cares about the facilities. You are there to look at the horses and the racing.
  12. Look at the stake for the Waikato Cup posted earlier in 1983 58k . You could buy a really good house for 60k in 1983.
  13. Next season $10k stakes for industry days? My unfortunate opinion based on the earlier published TAB redults. 10k
  14. After the scratchings at Te Rapa the NZ TAB have put out their fixed odds that I will compare with AU TAB for race six today for the first four favored runners NZ TAB TAB QLD/SA/TAS/NT Freeze Frame $2.40 $3.10 Badgeringdawitness $5.50 $8.50 Navigator $4.50 $7.00 Modernise $6.00 $12.00 Not great odds by our monopoly TAB. There is minimal incentive to bet on NZ TAB. They have the Favorite just over even money and three horses in the 4.5 to $6.00 range
  15. Might be a long-shot but trackwork? Keen on news local and Aussie
  16. The available jockeys was light at acceptance. Unfortunately both Kate Hercock and Ceil Butler are not riding today. Would have been very difficult if they had 16 horse fields to get suitable riders.
  17. To NZ Racings credit at least they called the meeting off at 6am and did not abandon after race 1 when all the costs of transporting horses to the course had been incurred. If a trainer had entered a horse at Matamata, they would have expected a heavy track. If they abandoned the meeting and transferred to the AWT most of the fields would have been scratched as the AWT would not have been a suitable surface. In my view correct decision following abandonment of Matamata to not consider the AWT.
  18. I have an interest in a horse running in race 1 at Sandown tomorrow. As a NZ owner and punter, I try and support the NZ TAB. I look at the odds they are offering vs what is available in Australia and clearly, they are not giving NZ punters a fair go. Here is an example form race 1 Sandown Tomorrow Number NZ TAB Bet 365 Best Odds 1 $11 $13 $13 2 $15 $19 $19 3 $14 $16 $19 4 $15 $17 $18 5 $9 $10 $11 6 $31 $51 $71 7 $10 $10 $11 8 $11 $12 $15 9 $4.20 $4.40 $4.40 10 $10 $10 $13 11 $7 $7.50 $7.50 12 $18 $23 $31 13 $4.80 $5 $5.25 While NZ TAB is in line with two favored runners, they are behind the 8 ball on all others. The problem with no competition.
  19. I remember when Sir Slick ran every week for about 8 weeks in Melbourne in non group or listed races and ran down the track every time. He returned to NZ and won the group 1 Thorndon Mile. The Aussies thought it was a joke. Way too Group 1 races in NZ
  20. Interesting comments P for P. If the JRC have set a ruling in dealing with Meth cases previously I hope they considered the reading when making this decision. The prior ruling is effectively case law. The connections of the winner are losers as are the syndicate of owners of Modernise who has been given a Claytons victory with the owners not being able to enjoy the win. I am sure they would rather have been racing at Avondale with a pearl bonus at stake than having the race awarded to them.
  21. There are 8 races scheduled for New Plymouth on Friday. All races have a starting limit of 12 horses. The nominations for 4 of the 8 races were R65 2000 17 noms, R65 1400 16 noms, Maiden 1400 16 noms and Maiden 1600 15 noms. These four races all have well over the starting limit. I know those already nominated get preference for a start but why does NZTR hold them open. Trainer/Owners would like to know weights and be able to secure jockeys. Any thoughts?
  22. Great ride to win on Initiative on Saturday. All the best.
