Newmarket RC reacted to JackSprat in Is this how a rating system should work?
My criticism was of the overall logic (or lack thereof) behind the current upgrade/downgrade system, rather than how the handicappers are implementing it.
For a ratings system to work it needs to progress the better horses through the grades, and "tweak" the ratings of the rest. Not send 10 wins horses back to the maidens.
The current system is designed to drive the vast majority of horses down the grades. That simply compounds the shortcomings of the previous system.

As long as the  big difference in racing numbers exists between the two islands it is really almost mission impossible to assess horses on a level playing field between the two.     The big problem is the 'intermediate" band of horses where the larger fields allow for more horses  per race to drop.   Those at the bottom tend to stay there and similarly the top ones stay up but in between those horses in the north to get a run have to so often race horses 20 points ahead of them where this is not very common in the south.     Also in the south where stands are more "fashionable" than in the north the variance can be somewhat offset by handicapping .

There have been some pretty average 5 win horses start in the cup in recent years. Imola springs to mind. And last year any horse that was nom'd and fully paid up, gained an entry. I hope he starts in it, would be great to see. Hasn't beaten anything much, but he can only but win, and the fashion that he has won, not to mention the times, it is pretty exciting.
When you hear crowds clap for a horse 150m out (like yesterday at Invergiggle) you know they are good.

Nobody who was on course the day he won first up will be surprised the way U May Connect is developing.
1.57 over 2200m was impressive enough, but to ping home in 26 something was a feat seldom achieved on the Invercargill track, let alone by a first starter in second gear!
He really could be anything this horse!

Dont forget Kings Landing will probably be in the mix next season so it shapes up as being  a potentially great one for followers of the square gaiters.

No finger nails left...it was big ask for me mighty Spur  but guys he was honest! bit worried bout Marcoola he faded really bad an he didn't look good when he came past, congrats to the winner its hard to do that at The Park, but Spankem  whoarrrr the boy is good, he toyed with em, run of race for me was Chase Auk (all dressed up n nowhere to go) when he finally got clear, boy, he came home like a really really good horse, if he don't clean up next week and the Jewels I'll eat my, my, ahh my, well can't say hat cos it's the mighty Lyell's and I wouldn't do that to The Champ's hat, you get the picture I reckon.....as for EYCalm friken pain in ass, but he did well to finish where he did, he is a really goodlookin trotter, I love watchin him run cos he's got such a mean stride, Sweet On Me looked like she just switched off, but hey all in all not a bad night for the mighty AllStars......
Blue... TEMPORALE - raced wide in the early and middle stages. Weakened near the 700 metres and compounded over the concluding stages and distanced at the finish. When spoken to Trainer/Driver T Herlihy advised he had been disappointed with the geldings efforts however as the horse was fresh up since the 2nd February and had an interrupted preparation, expected it would derive considerable benefit from the run. Mr Herlihy added that it was at this stage his intention to continue towards the Rowe Cup next week. Stewards will follow up with connections in the following days. Post race vet examination stated no obvious abnormality.
MARCOOLA - raced wide in the early and middle stages. Stewards will follow up the horses recovery with the connections in the coming days.

EYCalm easily the best horse in the race imo but you have to get things right to get the chocolates.  Apart from muffling the start he didn't trot well down the final straight when looking for a run. No doubt MP will sort him out though. Nat did say he was better left handed.

The original post was posted as an example of the day in the life of a successful training partnership. I am not saying nor are they inferring anywhere that i can see that others  dont work just as hard etc. No doubt the AS detractors will jump at the chance to have a crack after reading the above but it was posted for educational purposes from my perspective for those who  have not experienced stable life and costs of running a stable

As i said earlier this is an example for people to understand what its like running a  stable, in this case the successful  AS one. As i alluded to in my previous post its the same in TB code as well.
You want to introduce a completely different subject as in what happens to  slow or horses that are injured whilst in the AS stable. Quite simply i have no idea but you obviously have the inside running on this issue so why not educate us and tell us all.

For those of you who have never worked in a stable let alone run the best one this is a good example of the day/nights proceedings. All Stars Style.  The top gallops stables are no different  based on my experience.
Ashley Locaz and trotters Winterfell and Kings Landing bypass Auckland. “Ashley a grand little horse but the other three we are sending up will make things tough for him” Mark
Long Holiday weekends may be welcome for many people but not at the Rolleston stable of All Stars.
It means long working hours long racedays after major hopple mornings, a big hike in overheads and this weekend at least, a lack of sleep.
“New Zealand seems to plan for public holiday racedays but we find them a mixed blessing at best” Natalie noted
‘We hit the ground running this morning to work over 40 horses before we started thinking about raceday and all the preparation that goes with that.
Holiday costs affect us a lot and it is hard to get by on less staff when we have so much going on”
But wait, it gets worse. All Stars send 6 horses north to Auckland on Sunday morning, Spankem, Chase Auckland, Enhance Your Calm, Turn It Up and Sweet on Me an Amazing Dream.
‘We will be up at 1 am to feed them and set them up for the trip. Natalie said . And Mark notes that that is not the end of it.
“We do the boxes and get the feeds ready then we might get back to bed. It makes for long days and you have to put in those sort of hours. Its not easy”
The mere hours also do not take into account the professional stress of driving top horses in top races. In itself that demands a lot of time”
The horses will be bases again at Barry Purdons with Poi Bowden the man in charge.
“I will stay up there for the last week but will be home during this week’ Mark said.

Well done to the connections for taking care of the horse first. Many an owner or trainer might have kept on given its winning strike rate and had no horse in 12 months.
