Iam not really into this BGP , just not me nowdays ,  but they seem to have a real genuine love for the game, the horses  , they want to sell it as the horses and the punt, the more I think about it they are to be embraced by racing , still not my thing but important to get fresh blood onto the horses !!!!   Most those guys no doubt you can have a decent gas about what's what .  If you love racing you can go to racing and not have a bet in my view , I honestly think most on here would still enjoy going Arc , Auckland Cup Day , you name it any big day for the sport alone , or to see a good horse . How many people made money punting on Winx or Black Caviar or Frankel. How many people go to see them though,  shedloads , that's racing . I will always regret never seeing Frankel in full flow in the flesh ,  that's a thing of beauty , Winx I will never forget, made bugger all out of betting on her though .

If they have sacked them the ones now in charge beam in Brazil , Mon and Tues this week. No form, breeding , no anything to try line up a bet . Out of 5 mill population how many people do they expect to bet on race 5 Gavea on a Monday morning . It is a wind up , it must cost more in electricity , what's the turnover on Palm Beach Greyhounds . They have lost all sense of reality , no one's betting on NZ racing from overseas , and no one here is betting on Brazil or Palm Beach . The market for NZ racing is max 5 million , that's it all in from youngest to oldest if they allowed toddlers to bet , they are dead set dreamers .
A least  the European racing , if cherry picked there some great stuff from great tracks , with great jockeys and trainers and the  amount of imports now in OZ it's something to watch and put in the punters memory bank , well those of us left who love horse racing and call it horse racing not "the product ".
Horses just numbers to these guys though.

In many ways the way Davey mac has been treated is very poor, surely they could have offered a new deal with a pay cut and give him the option ,gee after all those years he should have been left to go on his own terms but with the new media setup you may have only heard him call the races and then bang off to greyhounds in Austria or something,I know southland will miss him,but a better send off than this would be more fitting.

    I'M CONFUSED.
Apparently you can have ten tables of 10 people at a restaurant but you can't have the same people there if they are attending the same function.
    Am i misunderstanding something here.
You can also have up to 44 rugby players plus coaches etc on a rugby field but they cannot attend a players funeral.

Once Stuff indicated that they wouldn't accept negative comments on the Enviroment
in their'' Letters to the Editor'' i  gave them the heave ho.
They are a rubbish media organization.
Both major media groups in NZ appear to publish to many controversial  opinions rather than facts.

have to agree Mike, but Dave possibly not to worried. As for getting at the suits, I"d rather they be called trough pigs. Just whom has the power to say he or she should go as their performance has not been to the required level?  No one it would seem to me. You would need a collective vote of no confidence from, Trainers federation, All owners, All racing clubs, incl harness and dogs. Is that likely to happen,  a resounding no.  So what can be done to turn a lemon into an orange?  Where is the power? Who controls senior management?

    It makes me bloody wild.
    It’s all back to front.
They are destroying what’s good about the TAB, Trackside, Radio Trackside and the little people and keeping the Fat Cats, who made the mistakes, their ridiculous salaries, the crap platform, rebates, bonus bets etc.
If ever there was a time to get back to basics, this is it.
Wall to wall racing! Get lost to that idea, is my opinion
Sorry Dean and the Board, Vella etc you have failed me let alone all the good hard working staff, who created none of this.

That makes you 16 years younger than me.  I think back to August 1969 and I think; …..my youngest brother and I had just invested in a Hasty Cloud weanling hoping to sell it in April 1970 at the yearling sales.  It went on to win (Lucky Cloud)  the Stradbroke Handicap, but we did okay with it.
In July 1969 I was given a Messmate mare in foal to Test Case for my 21st birthday..  I never got a key for my 21st birthday; I got an in foal broodmare.  That foal went through Trentham in January 1971.  Okay.  Interestingly, she foaled in November 1969 and having seen the unbelievable achievements of Battle Waggon's first crop prior to her foaling in mid November of that year, she was mated with Battle Waggon and that colt went through Trentham in 1972.  We all need some luck, and I got it there.
In 1969 I thought Bob Dylan's music was an oxymoron; it had no tune.  But I have come to appreciate his raw tones in the past 50 years.  In those days I thought of the Woodstock people as long haired no good hippies.  Age has taught me and I have widened my viewpoint of human behaviour in the past half century.  August 1969 was when I was a reserve for the Auckland rugby league team at University Tournament in Dunedin.  I said that I would play on the right wing as there so many left wingers in the team.
In August 1969 I was studying at Auckland Technical Institute part time as I held down a awful paying job with an antecedent firm of Ernst & Young.  I do not recall any influenza epidemic. What I do remember was an arrogant Northern Irishman at the Grey Lynn boarding house I was in, arguing with a dinkum tyke from Cork about the merits or otherwise of Bernadette Devlin.  Fifty years ago that Grey Lynn place was the pits of Auckland.  Now it is an overpriced gentrified area of that city.
I hope I have not bored you with anecdotes from half a century ago.

If this is the best Dean McKenzie can come up with then he clearly is the wrong man for the job.
The Trackside coalface people at Radio and TV are knowledgeable with a genuine passion for the industry doing their best to promote and attract people to racing and create turnover. Barry Lichter makes mention of Mark Claydon losing his job. There would be very few with more knowledge and passion for than industry than Mark. It is people such as Mark that are asset to racing yet now surplus to requirements according to Rita.
The elephant in the room is the wasteful extravagance and f*#kups at the top over the last decade from those on huge salaries and with very little knowledge of racing and wagering. Multi millions of racing funds sent down the toilet on the Typhoon Betting System that never got off the ground including the other useless overpriced betting system put in place under John Allen which continues at an annual cost of $17 million per year are just a couple of examples of very poor management decisions. There are plenty of others.
These are the people that are causing good people on the front line to lose their jobs at Trackside. People without any knowledge and departing leaving a ton of horse manure behind, they should be hanging their heads in shame. They won't be though as they will be at another trough without a single thought of their previous incompetent actions.
If you want to prune Dean, start with the rotten fruit close in instead of stretching the shears at arms length and leaning out to lop the best fruit at the edges of the tree.

I think this is round one, what I find interesting they have savaged their marketing/advertising arm but place faith in more none descript overseas racing. Cannot balance that, but remind self it is about cost reduction.
I hope they seriously review free to air TV as part of a reviewed marketing/advertising arm - IMHO that is elementary to promoting the product and may bring back the tens of thousands of investors they have alienated over the last 5 years or so. They have to attack their current issues boldly and accept earlier decisions we're terribly wrong.

Thats the old formula. i can't think of any board member on either TAB or NZTR that has been strongly qualified in IT ever. So you are wrong. You have had lawyers, accountants, public servants, business leaders but never IT.  The founder of Betfair once said "we are not a gambling company but rather a software company". I doubt Jeff Bezos had much retail experience yet look at Amazon now. Don't get me wrong I believe racing people should be there but where were they when average Joe blow could easily see what was wrong with the whole setup.

With respect your people are the reason why we are where we are, I want racing people to lead - not IT, not wagering, not technical but your folk come in after and set up what Racing people demand, not ask - demand

Sorry, I can recall some of those people on the RIB but not all. This is partly because of an erratic memory these days but also because we TAB directors never really had that much contact with those on the RIB.
As for the TAB: Rick Bettle was the Chairman of both Boards and Tom Jamison, was also on both Boards. Along with Barry Neville-White, Peter Vela, Richard Sissons, Bill Kermode after Richard resigned and myself. The late Jim Leach became the transition General Manager until the Act came into force. I was the GRNZ rep after Mary Mountier resigned and was there for most of the last 3-4 years before the dissolution of the two bodies.
Annette King was the Minister of Racing in my time before becoming the Minister of Health and Damien O'Connor took over from her.
The final Annual Report for the TAB makes very good reading with record turnover and racing being in excellent heart while sports betting was starting to emerge as a wagering force.

My supermarket stocks 7 brands of dunny rolls. NZRB/RITA thinks that if I expand that to 17 brands my customers will buy and use more and that will overcome the fact that I've now doubled the cost of stock control, ordering, deliveries, restocking etc and had to cut down the shelf space for the baked beans and fresh baked bread to make room for them. Of course my new $50,000 inventory control software should cover that and the $1,700 p.a. annual maintenance costs for that.
I only need a good enough selection to stop my customers from shopping elsewhere and be price competitive enough to maybe attract a few more customers so I grow the business. Everyone else in business knows this.
