pole reacted to gubellini in Terry McDermott
Sad to note that former Rotorua and Matamata trainer Terry McDermott passed away last Friday. His first winner was The Answer at Rotorua on the 11/2/61 ridden by Buzz Leggett. Lardalette won three 2yo races for him in the 1973-74 season. He was best known as the trainer of the top hurdler Owhata Chief who was involved in one of the most controversial races in NZ Racing history- the 1976 Great Northern Hurdles. Thun won the race by 1.5 l from Owhata Chief. There was an inquiry and placings stood. Owhata Chiefs connections appealed to the Waikato District Committee and the placings were reversed. At a later appeal Thun was reinstated as the winner.Next year in the 1977 Great Northern Hurdles Owhata Chief ridden by Choc Hounsell won by 40l from Royal Mail and Thun. He also won the 1976 Waikato, Awapuni, Trentham and Wellington Hurdles. Later he was sold to the States and won 10 further races and $US 81,962.

pole reacted to Alf Riston in riccarton meeting
Found the problem with mowing the track - too much money spent on fancy dinners and wine instead of plant and equipment

pole reacted to Black Kirrama in Roger Lang : Your memories of RC
He died yesterday in the same year as his wife .
Beautiful rider.
Who will ever forget his great apprenticeship and the association with D J O'Sullivan ?
His masterly WFA rides.
No doubt Gub will do some research on Roger's great wins.
Maybe add your own memories of a fantastic Jockey to this thread.

pole got a reaction from Baz (NZ) in Livermol Classic field 2022 : No Group One winners .
The state of n.z racing is in a sad situation.
Class of horses going around, lack of Quality riders and poor leadership.
I can remember, this was a mid week meeting1970s, drew excellent fields. Duty Free , Black Rod, Fort Hagen etc.
The public has lost interest in racing. Because of the cost of living or other ways of gambling. No Free To Air coverage.

pole reacted to meomy in Queen Elizabeth Rest in Peace
What are your fondest memories of Queen Elizabeth?
Did you attend any Race meetings where she was?
We recall her visit to Ellerslie Racecourse when she opened the new stand back in the 1990's, when Ellerslie had Gardeners & a well maintained Nursery where the public could buy Flowers & plants - we need that part of our Racing industry back in the limelight where it belongs.
May Auckland Racing Club get off their backsides & restore the Glasshouses and Gardens to the glory we once had in memory of Queen Elizabeth - it's 100 years ago since the Glasshouses were built and parts of which came from England.
It would be very fitting to undertake this and have the Flower Show back at Ellerslie and local Racecourses tied in with Race Meetings where Races are named after Queen Elizabeth
We look forward to Charlie, who also enjoys his racing, continuing on his parents legacy.

pole got a reaction from JJ Flash in Well Played Leo
Auckland is a over crowded mess. No mayor can improve the congested roads and ram raids and drive by gun crimes.
From Lusty Len to Pretender Phil Goff where has Auckland gone?
My prediction is that Efeso will win and Auckland will keep on Stumbling on. Not a super city by any stretch of a persons imagination.
