It is actually never easy. I agree with you - bringing people on course and into the game is tremenous.
But let's say Houlahan bets up to his weekly limit of $50 this Saturday and does the lot - none of those bets are public knowledge, but also neither is it other people's money. Without disclosing my yearly win/loss, I would be pretty disappointed to lose half my stake of a weekend.
I think when you put yourself out there as they have done and garner a LOT of people's hard earned, you are accountable for the performance, or lack thereof.
    That is all.

Even I have had weekend's when I lose half my stake. Even the TAB takes pity on me occasionally and offers me a bonus bet to top up my account.

I dont know why punters dont sit back and wait for the BGP bets to be announced. If you like it follow them through your own account. If the bet is one you would have dreaded being part of by being locked in with your donation then perhaps you dodged a bullet. You may get slightly lower odds than what they do but hey at least you have control over your money.

Yep NZ racing has a lot of issues and BGP is not one of them.  What they're doing is pretty positive for racing in NZ.
So easy to critique their syndicate bets with the benefit of hindsight, but bloody hard to be the ones standing up and putting the bets on.  They weren't far away.  They got overs on most of their bets and had a few 2nds/3rds that were the difference between a decent profit and the 50% loss.
They got people to contribute over $1m to their pool - people who knew the risks and still contributed.  Many of them had a good day out at the races.   Good on you BGP!

Guys I think you are all being a little unfair, the BGP is a great concept in my opinion to get people involved, do any of you actually even know what they are trying to achieve???

"Regarding Legarto the other night - with a new track possibly favouring front runners in a speed "
It seems most races favoured on speed - Dont tell me the great Ellerslie swoopers track has been changed in nature - this would be a tragedy

Odds on look on, is a punting adage with a lot of merit.
Regarding Legarto the other night - with a new track possibly favouring front runners in a speed event and Legarto known to come from the back - I felt he was vulnerable to a runner getting away in the straight. So it proved.

Some of their bets....head shakers really.
As for TAB...there is a reason many of us put our hard earned through overseas bookies. Legal - for now.

Come on now. IF? It is called Boys Get Paid. They hype it up, get people on course....
    And fail, big really.
All that research, good intel you imagine, and you end up with tricky multis with a low percentage of success.
They need to be judged on their results ......

If losing 50% of your stake is a great job.....??
They do a a great job overall in terms of marketing etc. Sure. But lousy on the punt, last two years.
BTW I am not complaining. I can just do maths. They have been poor and they need to improve in the punting dept, in my view.

What I was inferring was would the TAB be crowing paying out a million, or more, they are in the business of making money, not losing.

Exactly Scoobs, I like the energy he brings. He is one of those riders who I am happy to back in any race as I am pretty confident he will give you a run for your money, as they say.

I think it is a bit of an outlier. I suppose if they can generate enough profit from KM and Akl Cup day, perhaps that will sustain them through the year. The public stand will be full. I wonder what some of those well dressed people will think of the birds nests and piles of bird shit in the public stand?
For me I enjoy going all year round, just not especially on what my mother used to call the 'high holy days'. Too much security, too much drama, too many stressed staff not quite coping with their roles.
I am also slightly suspicious of the PR from our racing journalists - where does the line between reporting and selliing fall?

To do that you have to first give a rats arse.
Surely you have one or two of the staff not doing the track rebuild, on the stands and surrounds?
Or, are they so broke they cannot afford even those upgrades?
Track management are either incompetent or negligent. No amount of cheerleading from Guerin and co next Saturday changes that fact.
