Red, he is also breeder of the family of the impressive 2YO winner at Ellerslie today. I raced the half sister to him and he is has always been a better version at the same age than our mare. He will be a fine 3YO if left to grow into his frame. I hope they can resist the dollars that will come from HK for him.

Spare a thought today, Thursday, for it marks the sixtieth anniversary of the birth of Northern Dancer.
He was a May foal, he was too small to be much good, he was too small to be a classic horse, he was too small to make a stallion, he was by an unimportant sire; but he turned out okay.
From his second crop a big stretchy bay, rather unlike his sire, Nijinsky won his first eleven races, including the British triple crown, like Bahram did in 1935.
Very good sires rarely get more than one really good son to carry on their male line, but Northern Dancer had the likes of Sadler's Wells, Lyphard, Nureyev, The Minstrel, Vice Regent, Northern Taste, Storm Bird, Danzig and Try My Best amongst others.
From the perspective of history, the more Northern Dancer we find in a pedigree, the better.  Genetically, he's as close as we've come in breeding to something that's all good.
So, on 27th May, take a moment and heave a sigh.  Think of past glories and the little bay horse who could.
I note that in each of the past four group one races at Ellerslie, where they show an extended pedigree of each runner, that every contestant has some Northern Dancer blood in at least one part of their pedigree.
Thanks to Frank Mitchell for the above.

Levendi went for A4365,000. Quite cheap I think for his pedigree and performance.

So how good was that Zaaki performance?
I’ll let the respected form analysts speak for what Zaaki did and accept the Might And Power like comparisons to underline it.
Daniel O’Sullivan’s respected numbers put Zaaki’s effort into elite company alongside the best of Winx, Hartnell in a Turnbull Stakes and the often-forgotten Francis Of Assisi in its 10 length win of the 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington while he has also rated above the last two Cox Plate winning performances of Sir Dragonet and Ly’s Gracieux.
The time, too, was impressive. With an eased-down Zaaki stopping the clock at 2.01.06 for1 1/4 miles, the fastest time since the race was first run over this trip in 2012, and just a whisker away from the course record of 2.00.96, which he no doubt would have claimed had he been ridden out to the line.

I see what your getting at Breeder , I kind of thought lower than higher as not a stellar pedigree ,and  champion race mares produce a share of duds . I was well off with 800k though . I suppose it's only a few years and we wil get idea how well spent 2. 6 mil was . Good on the owners .

Well done to the owners but it looks like all those wins did not amount to much in the sale ring. Lot 528 Mizzy with 4 wins went for $2.2 million. No Grp 1 wins --2 x Grp 2 and one Group 3.
Probably bought to continue racing with so may not be a apples with apples comparison.
Arcadia Queen to come and she will possibly be a fairer comparison because she will not be racing again, I believe.

It is not alway's knocking.  We all now that this horse was a once in a lifetime horse.
Comparing horses and comparing horses in different eras in great fun.
This site allows all the name calling in the world, but if someone has an opinion on a horse they are considered knockers.

Sad to read of the death of Barney Curley  Stodge .
There are characters then there was Barney , never ever will there be another like him .
To see him in full on mode " Barney Curley in full rant" on you tube  is well worth a look  from the old Folkestone racecourse , unscripted from the heart full on  feelings , poor old Luke Harvey and John Macririck copping it big style plus , they reacted well to the barrage .
The guy was a genius,  his training of a fragile horse no better , Urbi Et Orbi sticks in my mind , 82 to 87 off the grid somewhere, who knows where only Barney would know  , turns up after 1800 plus days off to skate in as favorite in 20 plus runner race , and Silvertown I remember one day at Lingfield , I had decent bet at evens , a young Spencer got him home by a head without moving in saddle , they were a perfect pair those two . A sad day for the sport .
He did a ton for charity too .

If you did your research on All weather tracks better you would not talk of slugs . This year the iconic Australian race The Hotham was shifted to the poly at Ballarat,  without that switch the feast of speed would have been lost to the racing world for the year ,  those Hotham runners no slugs !!!

There is another possible addition, if a NZ stud wants to have a go. Levendi , the son of Pierro who won a Derby is in the latest Inglis online sale. I presume all the brokers have already tried to find a home for him before he ended up in this sale.

Lets face it... the all weather Synthetic track at Cambridge is no Strathayr turf surface that the proposed Auckland Turf Club is going to implement.
As I've stated before nothing less than a premier Strathayr turf racetrack is required for Premier racing in NZ !
The Cambridge installed all weather track will have it's purpose for trainer's preparing there better horses for spring campaigns and slower horses in winter that would otherwise be in a paddock.
Remember this is nothing more than a midweek class racetrack for Maidens, Rating 65's & 74's at best... that fit's a purpose in the small scheme of things.
This will do little to attract punters or increase much needed turnover NZ Racing needs!
We need more Premier Strathayr turf racetracks installed south of the Bombay's in horse populated areas if we want premier racing, with high class thoroughbreds and increased turnover from punters!
However after watching the inaugural running of the first meeting on Wednesday I was buoyed by the fact it played well for all runners with little evidence of the boring leader's bias these all weather tracks generally produce.
There is hope for punter's confidence if this trend can continue after the honeymoon period!
Congratulations to Cambridge JC for all the hard work that resulted in a successful first days racing on the new racetrack.
Positivity and team work particularly at Club level is always needed to help move NZ Racing forward into the future because in recent years its lacked strong leadership at any higher level.

    tell me one thing
if synthetic track racing is so good why isnt it the predominant racing surface ?
i re iterate synthetic track racing is for second rate slugs racing in winter to avoid washouts and ONLY to ensure some level of turnover and partcipation.
its a weed in racings beautiful garden.😝

Exactly. Good horses traditionally get turned out to avoid breaking them on heavy 10s, and start getting brought back in about July. Only trouble is then half of them couldn't get a good enough surface to gallop on often enough in their prep to even make it to their target races, eg Spring Carnival in Oz. This opens up the options for prep and conditioning considerably amongst other benefits. It won't magically solve all the problems but it's a great start. Well done to CJC for a successful first race day.

No you suggested second class races with second class horses, I merely pointed out a lot of group 1 winners come out all weather races  . . Some of the big players might get a run into a late two year old with promise so not all duffers , they wouldnt guts out a good one on a heavy 10 in May though . See how many the big guns race inexperienced slow to hand horses  up North on the AW  tracks making use of a good surface in Oct Nov Dec when in old days they would have missed out on the experience and been put away for winter  then have to chase the 8 ball early in new season .It is the class of race not the surface .
I've been backing horses on all weather tracks for 30 plus years since  Lingfield racecourse first meeting on a surface called equitrack , I am experienced in doing my cash  in equal proportions whatever the surface  , a slow horse is a slow horse whatever the track .
