Red Rum got a reaction from bazach in How did that name get through
Done a bit of digging , Pharr Canal , out of mare called La Fontaine . La Fontaine (La Fonteine) is a County in Louisiana , in that County is a township called New Iberia where in 1872 Henry Newton Pharr was born . You've guessed it Henry Newton Pharr grew up to head the Louisiana -Rio Grande Canal Company . He built a canal near New Iberia called Pharr Canal where now it's pretty good for fishing by all accounts . Straight up legit name in honour of Mr Pharr .

Red Rum got a reaction from nomates in A story to be told...and embraced for the sake of the horse
Dream Alliance , they sent it to top trainer so must have given them good vibes early . The other horses out the mare I could have beaten , carrying a decent pack over the fences including the water jump , they couldn't run out sight on dark night . The sire doubt be worth more that a price pint of Tetley now .Dream Alliance one out the box , living in retirement luxury now .

I'd buy in a subdivision if they build one at Omoto Racecourse , however I want it on stilts with a boat .

A huge weekend coming up in the UK with the Derby, Oaks and Eclipse all taking place.
For the first time ever, the Derby and the Oaks will be run on the same afternoon at Epsom albeit behind closed doors though with the proviso some Owners may be allowed to attend.
17 have been entered for the Derby which will have a much reduced first prize of £283,550. Aidan O'Brien has entered seven so the final shape of the field is far from clear. ENGLISH KING remains favourite at 9/4 with 2000 Guineas winner KAMEKO at 7/2. RUSSIAN EMPEROR, MOGUL and VATICAN CITY are all at 6s and 7s with PYLEDRIVER the best of the long shots to my eye at 14s.
The Oaks has just 11 entries with English 1000 Guineas winner LOVE at 11/8, Ribblesdale winner FRANKLY DARLING at 9/4 and Irish 1000 Guineas winner PEACEFUL at 9/2
The ground at Epsom is currently Good and while it's a cool, and unsettled week up here there doesn't seem any large amounts of rain forecast.
About nine miles north-west of Epsom Downs is Sandown Park and if Saturday's classic action isn't too much Sunday sees the Group 1 Eclipse over 2000m. An important one-off change to the conditions for the race is 3-y-o are ineligible this year so it's effectively the Prince of Wales's Stakes two and a half weeks later.
8 have been entered but this is without doubt the best race of the season so far. Horses rated 124, 126 and 128 in opposition tell you all you need to know and when the multiple Group 1 winner DEIRDRE is a 25/1 outsider you know you've got a quality race.
Obviously, the Prince of Wales is a key from line and winner LORD NORTH bids to cement his ascent to the top table while JAPAN has to bounce back from a disappointing effort.
GHAIYYATH won the Coronation Cup with a brilliant front running galloping display. Sandown suits front runners but this is 2000m not 2400m and the opposition is much better - indeed, they son't come much better than ENABLE who is understandably favourite.
ENABLE is probably the best horse to have raced in Britain since Frankel - she is a dual Arc winner and was only just denied a hat trick in the Paris mud last October. She has won 13 of her 15 races and amassed nearly £10.5 million in win and place money. She won the Eclipse last season on debut beating MAGICAL in a close finish but if anything this year's renewal is a notch better with stable mate LORD NORTH a real challenger. The reports from Newmarket are she is as good as ever - she'll need to be.

Back to pick 6, why when no one gets all 6 does it pay out on any 5? It's called pick 6 not pick 5 and I recon it would be best if it Jackpots and can get up to a decent size to get people want get involved.

I wouldn't have a cent on South Island racing until October , a lottery unless you have a bit info from stable to work on and even then IMHO you'd have to be brave or well off to go anything decent . I think they race this week , they will go into their knees with weather this week , it will be a heavy 55 and can the horses possibly go wider into straight ?
Good to see Pam Robson get a win , handy horse that , good on them .

You are correct. Sunshine Coast has a crown about 6 horses off the fence. FLEMINGTON has a similar scenario. The problem when you get to Doomben is when the rail is out - sometimes up to 9 metres! It’s a narrow track and when the rail is out, horses need to be in the first 2 or 3 pairs. The pace is dictated to suit them. I like Sandown as a track. Backmarkers can win there - and do often. But it gets down to the “pace” of the race at a lot of venues. At the moment, Eagle Farms new track is like concrete about 3 inches below the surface. They get their toes in and cut the surface but the firmness underneath is causing problems for horses - a lot of jarring up. I played golf with one of the top Vets servicing leading Stables and he’s getting a lot of concern from Eagle Farm due to the firmness. The best track in SE Qld at the moment is Caloundra. Wide track with a long straight. Kind to horses.

Looking through the fields I am uplifted by the triumph of Kiwi battling spirit some people have , there are a lot of horses in there tomorrow I would have chucked the towel in day 1 of closedown , a few in there wouldn't win a walk over to be brutally honest but best wishes to all for a good day .
