J Mac in doubt after somersaulting from a horse at Wyong.

“Jockey James McDonald has this afternoon informed Racing NSW Stewards that further scans performed on his left foot have revealed a fracture in that foot. James also informed Stewards that his medical specialist advised him to stand down from riding for approximately four weeks to allow the injury to heal. James was injured when dislodged on Wyong Cup Day (Friday 1st September).” -
Retiring to Charlie Duckworth and Kathy O’Hara’s property and possibly be involved in some equestrian sport.

Just Horse Racing. An era has ended with Chris Waller announcing the retirement of champion sprinter Nature Strip. The decision was made almost immediately after the nine-year-old finished down the track in the Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday with Waller convening a spontaneous press conference to confirm the news. Standing alongside Nature Strip’s majority owner Rod Lyons, Waller paid tribute to a grand horse who at his best was almost unbeatable over sprint journeys winning three TJ Smith Stakes (2021-21-22), the 2021 The Everest and giving the top trainer his first Royal Ascot win in last year’s Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes. “I’m announcing his retirement on behalf of the owners,” Waller said. “He’s just been an amazing horse and everything he does he does to the best of his ability, even today, he was prepared well, he came to the race sound, he was trialling well. “There has been no indication that race ability’s not there, but he wasn’t the same horse in the race today. “Yes, he jumped well, he travelled nicely, he looked to come up the rise well, but that same acceleration or spark wasn’t there.” Nature Strip retires as the winner of 22 of his 44 starts along with nine minor placings and more than $20.7 million in prizemoney. For Lyons, the gelding has been life-changing and his over-riding emotion was one of gratitude, not only for Nature Strip’s achievements but for the fact the horse is going to the paddock happy and sound. “It’s a sad day, we knew it would come. All champions come to the end of the road,” Lyons said. “I wish he could have won today and gone on. “But he’s been a wonderful horse and taken us to such magnificent heights. “The important part is this horse retires healthy and sound. “Today he said to us, ‘boys, I have taken you around the world, I have done all I can possibly do for you, c’mon give me a break.” Lyons confirmed Nature Strip would spend his retirement at the property of Waller’s assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth and his wife, jockey Kathy O’Hara. “He will have a great home and a great life, he will be a very happy horse,” Lyons said

Racenet Clinton Payne “A shocking fall has marred the Wyong Gold Cup on Friday. The race was won by the John O'Shea-trained Benaud but the story of the race was an incident near the 800m of the $240,000 feature. The Sara Ryan-trained The Mediterranean, which was racing outside the lead, went amiss and dislodged his jockey Regan Bayliss. Hopeful, which was trailing The Mediterranean, was unable to avoid the stricken gallop and started a domino effect. Hosier ran into Hopeful, Kalapour's jockey Tim Clark was dislodged when his mount ran into Hosier, Alegron was put out of the race when he wasn't able to avoid Kalapour with Pretty Amazing's jockey Brett Prebble parting company with his mount when running into Alegron. Racing NSW advised that all riders were conscious with Tim Clark complaining of pain to his back, Regan Bayliss is suffering from pain to his leg while Brett Prebble appears to have escaped injury. The Mediterranean was euthanised but all other horses appear to have avoided any serious injury.” -
By Clinton Payne 05:12pm • 01 September 2023 0 Comments Champion jockey James McDonald is under an injury cloud after he was involved in a fall at Wyong on Wyong Gold Cup Day. The seven-time premiership winning rider parted company from the Godolphin galloper Razors in the Da Vinci 3&4YO Benchmark 68 Handicap (1300m). The incident happened at the start of the race when odds-on favourite Razors knuckled, taking his first strides after the barriers opened. The Sidestep gelding's nose touched the ground and McDonald was launched over the galloper's neck head first into the turf. McDonald was conscious after the incident and he removed a riding boot and walked unaided, albeit gingerly to the ambulance which transported him to hospital. "He's got pain in a foot and his shoulder," Racing NSW steward Chris Albrecht said. "He's been ruled out for the remainder of the day and scans will tell us if he is going to be any chance of riding tomorrow." McDonald was replaced by Tyler Schiller aboard Desert Icon in the Wyong Gold Cup while the superstar jockey has a strong Randwick book of rides for Chelmsford Stakes day on Saturday. His rides include Nature Strip in the Concorde Stakes, Montefilia in the Chelmsford Stakes, Tiz Invincible in the Furious Stakes and Going Global in the Tramway Stakes.

James McDonald is a clear leader for the Sydney jockeys title – set to be his fifth in succession and seventh overall. Amazing.
