The Group 1 feature at Trentham was taken out by $17 chance Desert Lightning but the win was overshadowed by a barrier mishap that had a huge impact on the result of the race. The drama kicked off when the starter let the 17-horse field go but the gates of Faraglioni (barrier 15), Desert Lightning (16) and Aegon (17) didn't open. Most other runners ran approximately 400m before being taken back to the start for vet checks and a re-run. With all horses passed fit to start, the second attempt went off without a hitch but the result of the re-run understandably raised a few eyebrows. Those who stood in the gates the first time finished 1st, 2nd and 4th, with fourth-placegetter Aegon motoring home from a hopeless position. Barrier incidents happen but the result suggests the three horses who didn't jump the first time were afforded a big advantage (either that or it's one of the great coincidences), which is very disappointing - especially when it's a Group 1 feature.

Congrats to the winner who I thought would win anyway before that false start mess, but how shambolic and totally amateurish do we look.
