CommonSensical got a reaction from Insider in Top 5 NZ track surfaces ?
Yep have to agree about Ruakaka lovely track , horses seem to run good times all year round , Not sure what it must cost owners to transport horses up there from Waikato?
Cant have a piece of Awapuni got to be close to the worst track in NZ
Trentham in the Summer is a pretty awesome place Love the winter steeplechase meetings
Like Woodville for a betting track no bias , I have seen them run some very good times there over the last few seasons e.g. 1.22 (1400) Even when its wet they seem to win from the rail or a bit wider but never on the outside rail.
Hastings seems to be well groomed and provides a pretty consistent surface
IMO

over watering
Awapuni was a joke on Saturday
They tried so hard to degrade NZ racing and did a fantastic job of it.

CommonSensical reacted to Leggy in Racing Industry Bill
Since I posted it there, I'll post it here as well in case people don't want to go there. From: https://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/Files/RIA-Racing-industry-Reforms/$file/RIA-Racing-Industry-Reforms-Bill-No-2-December-2019.pdf
It doesn't look like the DIA entirely agree with this and seriously question whether it is legal though they wrote the legislation. From the latest RIA:
The property proposals are also largely based on the recommendations of the Messara report. The RIA notes that the proposals involve interference with the property rights of racing clubs. This raises issues under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, including whether such interference can be justified, and a risk of litigation. Time constraints have limited the ability to fully investigate the impacts on the clubs concerned and their associated communities. The limitations affect the assessment of likely benefits and the evidence certainty that net benefits will accrue. Cabinet has noted that care needs to be taken to shift the industry balance towards a commercial focus while still acknowledging its community underpinning and it is important that implementation of the reforms meets both these objectives. Stakeholders were consulted on similar proposals in the Messara report, which attracted widespread negative comment. The alternative proposals set out in this RIA have not been consulted on publicly and engaging openly with stakeholders throughout the process will be critical to the prospects of success for the reforms.
This option addresses the problem of underutilised assets at clubs that do not race. However, the creation of a power for a code to wind up a club that does not race would be a significant incursion of a club’s rights of association and, due to the vesting of the assets, common law property rights
253. The proposals do not impinge on individual autonomy or responsibility. However, the preferred options have impacts on property rights of clubs, which have potential NZBORA implications given racing clubs’ status as legal persons. In addition, the proposals impact on a club’s right of association and right to peaceful assembly.

CommonSensical reacted to 100 1 in Rotorua Scratchings Today
The trainers might not like it but it's perfect for the punters having a track that you know exactly how it's playing...no shifty irrigated ground on the rail

CommonSensical reacted to Tim Carter in Weigh In - Shaune Ritchie
I never caught the Weigh In programme and I probably should not comment as no doubt I am going to piss a few people off. However I think there are a few things that are never mentioned regarding the state of the industry. All I hear is that the stakes are too low and it is driving owners out of the game. That is true but not the entire story
. Owners are getting stuffed up the chutney left right and centre ( to quote my good mate Leo!) Not all of it from the powers that be. Some of these so called" top trainers" are charging anywhere from 85/day to 100/day, clipping their tickets on chiropractor charges, jump out fees, administration charges, vitamin charges, gear charges, and whatever they can think of. They cry poverty but still manage to take a holiday to Hawaii, Fiji , world cruise or whatever once a year. They drive an Audi or other luxury car a, have a big TAB punting account etc. As they read this they know who they are. They get away with it by forming syndicates . Some of the Cambridge Trainers have between 55 and and 140 horses in their stables so don't let me hear them crying poverty at the rates they are charging! Throw in some of the vets, and farriers that charge like wounded bulls and you have an industry that is in shit street not all of it at the feet our administrators.
In saying that NZTR still have a lot to answer for. Like them or loathe them, Race Course Inspectors, J McKenzie, B McKenzie and the the like seemed to police the industry without all the cost that is now happening. NZTR have around 30 personal policing the industry (and a policy of dob your mates in) . NZTR programme trials at Ruakaka or Avondale so an owner with a horse in Cambridge is up for between 350 and 500 in transport costs alone. The big stables don't care as they have a syndicate horse or big money owner. It appears that people are employed at NZTR in vital positions but have no real empathy at what it is really like out here. They have no idea of the costs involved when they do the programmes.
Meanwhile there are a lot of trainers trying to keep owners in the game by charging affordable training fees and no hidden charges so big ups to them!

CommonSensical reacted to Phillipe in Ellerslie - Great Northern Day
I’m not sure that argument has merit.
The upcoming RWC will prove a point. Humans are creatures that like to congregate with other similar humans. There will be the homebodies but there will be large numbers who will attend a pub to watch each match. Essentially enjoying a togetherness, for want of a better word.
Racing is the same, without a place to gather, humans will drift to another place. The fact that the numbers are already dropping indicate that there are no new people being drawn to racing. At least not on a regular basis.
New young people have as much interest in watching trackside as watching the grass grow, they only want the live interactive event, a few times a year. Not enough to maintain the infrastructure or horse base we presently have.
Racing has had its day in NZ, in its current format. The radical change needed to maintain the current base of interested people, is not something that the present management would ever try as they lack the mandate and fortitude.

Did anyone else turn up???
I go past the place each day, along with 50,000 other cars and there is not even a sign up that tells me the races will be on this weekend.
I do see an overgrown hedge/bush which could be replaced with a prominent sign, but that would take effort and thought. There is a moss ridden sign buried in the bush that can only be read with some form of contortion of the body and I’m unsure if it is ever updated.
Racing lives in the old world, those that know the races are on, will continue to turn up... until they die and the attendance will drop. Which it is..
It’s clear that racing is its own problem. Stop blaming the world and blame yourselves.
