It scares me to think of how much money the industry has GIFTED to these TURF EXPERTS/CONSULTANTS ?? I'm pretty sure they would not accept any sort of accountability even though they are right up there accepting Industry money.

John, and that is exactly why we are in the mess that we are. The “experts” have got rid of  most of the provincial tracks  that have been prepared that way for a 100 years and served us so well. Incidentally NSW seems to be keeping all their country tracks, promote racing there, put up reasonable stakes and offer the country runners huge grand finals in Sydney when country comes to town.

Any one remember the late  Bernie Connors of Lone Hand fame and many other good ones?

I remember Bernie saying to me one day at the races “booze and you loss”
That was probably 40+ years ago.
    Maybe I should have listened!

d.burrow - Joan reacted to say no more in Holiday comp - Boxing Day entry thread
See earlier thread for how the comp works.  Boxing day results will determine where you land in the knockout draw - the higher you score the better the chance of a first round bye. There are also two places available, to the two highest scorers, in the Champion of Champions final.
Simply pick two horses in each of the 10 races at Pukekohe and nominate two races as your best bet races.
You will have $10 each way on both selections and a $2 quinella - double that for your best bet races.   Posting deadline is 12.30pm.

Fermoy, you bring up a few points that need clarification.
The apprentice who rode the "erratic" horse is not a 4kg claimer.  He was the top apprentice last season.
The synthetic chute which goes across the course proper cannot be avoided, even on pulling up.
When you start telling jockeys to be careful or go quietly over certain parts of a track it's time to pull pin.
Every jockey has the individual right not to ride if they believe the track is unsafe as long as they pack up and vacate the jockeys room.
I believe at least one member of the work force at the Awapuni track has been dismissed.

What it doesn't say or spell out is that RACE have lost the earnings from the Groups' third most profitable day, because the Boxing Day meeting is being held at Otaki under the auspices of the Otaki Maori Racing Club.
I have also learned that the funding from last week has been withheld, so financially RACE is now in dire straights, if it wasn't already.

http://i1.cmail19.com/ei/t/15/EB0/B4D/145647/csfinal/RACElogo1-9900000000079e3c.JPG UPDATE FROM THE RACE BOARD
On behalf of RACE and the Manawatu Racing Club we would like to express our sincere apologies for the abandonment of the LawnMaster Eulogy Stakes Day at Awapuni on Saturday 10 December.
The ramifications of this outcome are sorely felt by guests, sponsors, club members, owners, trainers, jockeys, punters and the entire racing industry, and we will work with all relevant parties to review, remedy and learn from this unacceptable situation. The NZ Sports Turf Institute have been onsite twice since the weekend and we are pleased to welcome NZTR and industry experts to the course today. We look forward to receiving their advice and guidance to ensure Awapuni can provide a safe racing surface at a metropolitan venue with the appropriate infrastructure.
We have also initiated an internal review of our systems, processes, infrastructure and capability to ensure we meet and exceed industry expectations into the future. And while there are any number of factors that contribute to an abandonment, ultimately we got it wrong and are putting our hand up to acknowledge that fact.
There are protocols to follow when an incident of this nature occurs, and these take time to work through. What this means is that there will be no racing at Awapuni this weekend (Saturday December 17) when we were scheduled to host the Humphries Construction Manawatu Cup. That raceday will now take place at Trentham.
We know there are many groups looking to host their Xmas parties on course next weekend at Awapuni, and that option will still be available by way of a phantom meeting with the action from Trentham beamed onto the screens in the Awapuni hospitality zones. We’ll be in touch with all booked hospitality guests to confirm their intentions to either proceed as planned, relocate to Trentham, or receive a refund.
The Manawatu Standard Boxing Day at the Races is another casualty of the current situation, with the raceday being transferred to Otaki.
January 7 sees the running of the Japac Homes Marton Cup, an event which is a qualifier for the Wellington Cup and also boasts a support card of feature races. This event will now transfer to Trentham and be the launching pad for the 150th NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup carnival.
In summary, this has been a difficult time for all those involved, but you can rest assured that the team at RACE will make the necessary changes by working with our colleagues to bring Awapuni back to the standard that the racing industry demands in these challenging times.

    Yours in Racing

d.burrow - Joan got a reaction from THE TORCH in Should we be worried about Awapuni again
I have given this some careful thought taking into account two factors:
1] This is a Central Districts race.
2] The Northern fillies don't want to travel again this coming Saturday
I say reschedule it for this Saturday at Trentham. The CD fillies then get to run on their home patch as after all it is a CD race. Maybe even a S I filly might  might venture north. The Northern fillies who want to run can, and those that don't want to venture south, can wait for Boxing Day, after all it is only nine days further on!
If the Eulogy Stakes is transferred north and run say next week it will seriously dilute the quality of the Eight Carat on Boxing Day, then everyone is a looser, especially the CD.

I was told this morning that 7 (?) of the runners came from up north and they said that they wouldn’t get on the float again to travel south if the race was rescheduled to Trentham is coming Saturday.
I don’t agree with the race going north but useless RACE only have themselves to blame and sadly the CD owners get shafted once again. The ongoing fallout from this mess is catastrophic.
