That's what happens in a monopoly, not many can compete, and when the monopoly falters there is not much left. NZGR chooses to ignore the well being and promotion of the sport and just plod along

But is it a positive for the sport? With racing in general on the decline in NZ what benefit did that effort provide? The hardcores will punt on anything variety not required, but there isn't enough of them to sustain racing. Just imagine the same happening in thoroughbreds? What makes racing appealing to the everyday punter is variety. The danger here is drop out. As trainer numbers decline the risk of racing cessation increases. One thing learned in my life time is this, when you're gone, few remember your name.

The White Poodle reacted to pilli in RIP Steve Clark
Sad News broke today that highly respected Northern Trainer Steve Clark had passed away suddenly.
Steve had a lifetime association in The Greyhound Code, harking back to Kumeu Days during the 1970's.
After mixing his  business career & greyhounds as hobby,The New Millennium saw Steve get serious & devote all his time to building up a strong Racing Team.
From his Dairy Flat Kennel, alongside partner Kathy,he tasted Group One success for the first time in time honoured Waterloo Cup 2008 with Magic Spike,They also combined to win NZ Shootout in same year
Steve enjoyed mass publicity due to deeds of star stayer Swift Fantasy,a dual Group One winner in Silver Collar 2010,and NZ Stayers Cup 2011.
A rare Group One Quinella followed in 2012 NZ Derby, with a litter he bred and reared seeing Grizz and Peking Tom starring.
Another home bred Blitzing Mayhem gave Steve his first NZ Cup victory in 2014,a celebration lasted long into the night next day at Sefton Arms.(thanks Steve)
Recent years saw a change in property and downsizing his team, but another quality hound gave Steve his second NZ Cup on mantelpiece with Pinny Mack in 2019.
Ironically,Pinny Mack was favourite today at Manukau In The Peter Earley Classic, his final race in a stellar broadcasting career. However, like Steve, his runners never made it to the start'.
Thanks Steve for the many trips to the races, and thrills galore helping with your runners on the track.
Condolences to your Daughters, Grandkids ,and Kathy.

Was anyone else unfortunate enough to see the Rosanowski-Cole interview on Trackside today around 1pm?
It's like Rosanowski read this thread and thought 'let's take it up another notch'. It was truly vomit inducing.
Rosanowski interviewing Cole pointing out how awesome he is, Cole agreeing that he's hotshit, saying he will win 1000 races next season "I promise you that". Rosanowski pointing out how awesome Craig Rendle is, Cole agreeing saying he was happy to go into business with "such a great guy". Then Rosanowski says (I'm paraphrasing) "are you concerned that you're dominating and pushing everyone else out or do you think they should just get better and reach the bar you've set" to which Cole suggests everyone needs to lift their game cos he started from the bottom , he then talks about "sacrifices" and being willing "to borrow money and borrow more money" , by this stage my eyes hurt from rolling them so much and my mouth is full of vomit.
Rosanowski can redeem himself and this cock sucker interview if he follows up with...But Brendon you borrowed and borrowed and then went BANKRUPT and have been living a lie under Lisa Cole's name every since.
But Brendon you are currently facing criminal charges for cheating/animal cruelty.
But Brendon , Craig Rendle hooked you (and himself) up with all that frozen semen when abusing his position as Chairman with his first dibs 'sales'.
    But Brendon.....
But No, it was a big Rosanowski/Cole wank fest.
I'm not even involved in the game anymore, I'm not a 'sore loser'. But I know Cole, and I see him for what he is, and I feel sorry for all the decent , honest participants in this game that have to sit there and listen to his bullshit. And I feel sorry for other people like Rosanowski that buy into all this bullshit Cole spins and paint him as some kind of legend of the sport,he's the opposite,he's a scourge.

The White Poodle reacted to Emotive in What The Future Looks Like
Life as you knew it has now changed forever. The world has changed forever. How we think, plan and rebuild will be remodelled. Governments will scramble, industries will crumble, markets will be challenged. Those with vision will survive and prosper, others will die a quick death.

The whole world needs to take stock of its behaviour, this current challenge will return in a new form, possibly with greater aggression and devastation. I have faith that New Zealand can and will meet this immediate challenge, but the cost will be hundreds of billions, and what of the next invader? Scientists tell us there will be a "next" invasion.

The business world is facing massive challenges right down to how factories and plants will be manned in the future. Tourism will be hit hard, hotels will go bust, operators lost to the wilderness they so proudly showcased. How we travel will change, border controls will increase, public spaces may look very different. New Zealand will face many challenges and hardships.

The racing industry is in crisis, some of which was created pre-COVID. So where do we stand? What does our future look like? The answer, precarious. Are we an essential service? no. Can we recover? possibly. Do we need to restructure? most definitely yes. The restructure will be brutal, don't assume you will all survive because you may not. The whole industry relies on the discretionary dollar, that dollar has all but disappeared. Tracks will go, licences will go, administrators, staff, and trainers will go. Follow on business will go. Adoptions will decline.

It is possible that greyhound racing may continue on three tracks only, that actually makes sense. There would be significant industry cost savings, especially on dual-code tracks. Centralised racing is not a silly idea. The next question is who would be favoured to provide the racing product, supply the dogs? I think you all have a fair idea where that's heading, but that model is also fraught with danger. Reduced trainer numbers increase the risk of complete closure. Will the betting public support a contract like racing product with only 4 or 5 trainers racing at each track? Future viral epidemics will shut down kennels in the short term. Forms of Coronavirus also affect racing. The Australian epidemic decimated their racing numbers. A viral mutation is a given, it will return.

Yes, life as you knew it has changed forever. Time to take stock and make some potentially hard decisions. Good luck to all.

The thing is, when you let something like this drag on and on and on, no one cares anymore. The saddest part about it all, this typifies greyhound racing in NZ, like this thread no one cares, there are the few in the industry that dominate everything starting at the top, but for the average person like myself that used to love participating it's dead and buried. There is nothing to attract ownership, dont get me wrong, there are some real good people there, but they must find it bloody hard to compete with the dominaters. It's just as ridiculous when you think about the poor punter looking at the fields being dominated by the few also, the fun and interest has gone.

    It's a Bigtime bore.
Or is that Big time bore?
What's with the gap between big and time now..? Is that so we can start recycling all the Bigtime names again...oh joy.
I personally prefer the North/South variety for punting, with dozens of trainers able to share the honours on any given day.
You could argue that it's not B Cole's fault that no one in the C.D can go with his standards...to a degree that's a fair enough point but you could also argue that B Cole is a horrible piece of work, a nasty, greedy man, a cheat, a bully, a criminal... the worst thing to ever happen to this industry.

Watch the replay and see how she struggled to box the dog and actually kneed the dog upwards assisting it to flip right over. This is not the first time at all she has needed assistance to box and maybe the Stewards  could look into this.

From another forum... Seems to be a protected species for some reason????

Today we learn that big bad Brendon has incurred the wrath of Greyhounds NZ. They have finally decided to pull their collective heads out of the sand and have had him warned off from all race tracks in NZ. After weeks of outrage from the news media, and calls for the banning of Greyhound racing in all forms, the board have finally acted and hit the Cole empire with a wet bus ticket.
The rule the board have invoked is 21, d. Powers and duties of the Board. Under this rule, the board may vary the conditions of the warning off as they see fit. On one extreme they can go the whole 9 yards, and effectively shut him down, or they can go the other way and vary the conditions to make it selective on what he can do or can't. They appear to have chosen the latter in Brendons case. They also appear to have not applied the same sanctions to the licensed trainer Lisa Cole whom is married to Brendon, thereby allowing the kennel to have the least disruption possible. You can read from this what you want, but from where I sit, it looks like the board are creating a smoke screen in that they appear to being harsh, when in reality they are doing very little. It is a snow job, designed to appease a howling public, putting the fire out with heavy breathing.
When the news media, and animal welfare interests digest this insipid attempt by Greyhound NZ to douse the fire, you will find it back firing on them. They would of been better to do nothing. This only reinforce's the view that the Board of Greyhound NZ are only concerned with the least disruption with dog numbers in the CD, rather than their responsibility and DUTY to protect the reputation of Greyhound racing in NZ.
This has been so badly managed from start to finish, it defies belief, and the miss management continues. I will be most surprised that when it features on 3 News next, that they are not awake to what is going on here, that they the NZGRA are attempting to put out the fire by doing a claytons sanction on Brendon, but allowing business as usual at the Cole kennels. The Greyhound people, by that I mean the honest folk that love their dogs and do things right are being poorly led by a bent dysfunctional Board. They need to be cleaned out, you deserve better.

( I have been given permission from the recipient to reproduce this).
""It is the decision of the NZGRA integrity unit that following the incident at Addington raceway on Friday 25th November 2016 that under the rules of greyhound  racing you are warned off.
As a warned off person you will not be permitted to enter or remain on any premise where a greyhound meeting or trial is being held.
The warning off is effective from Wednesday 5th December 2016 and will remain in place until the JCA make a decision regarding the charges that the RIU have laid under the rules of greyhound racing"

Dear Mauro, Sean and the Board   I sit here today typing this on a Sunday been my day off which is always a family day but I'm in such a annoyed mood I need to put this together so I can carry on the day in a much more pleasant way. First off the greyhound board playing burry your heads in the sand and say nothing to media is nothing new to me as have been in the code for coming up 12yrs. However your inability as a C.E.O. and the current board shows a complete lack of the feeling out there for the grassroots people up and down the country. Now greyhound racing in N.Z. usually follows Australia's lead with most matters and occasionally they try something of ours but you dropped the ball on this one. Weather Cole is guilty or not will sort itself in the future however how the board have handled it is piss poor. The thing that really grinds my gears and I'm sure plenty of people in the greyhound code is the way that live baiting in Australia was dealt with, disqualification and dogs deregistered with anyone been on site of that particular raid were gone burgers, fair or not. It showed some effort from the leaders of the code at the time to basically save face with the public and were prepared to take that issues on later down the track. Now the Greens have publically stated they don't want the greyhound code anymore, no real news there but if the next election is tight and push comes to shove regarding deals then where do you think we all will be ????? Don't take the example of greyhound racing N.S.W. as they all looked like a bunch of dicks for doing what the entire leadership structure of G.R.N.Z. is doing currently - NOTHING!. Grant and Baird went bye bye and the only reason for that wasn't great leadership from the people that are in charge of the sport it was because the grassroots participant got up in arms, there shit sorted, and the right people in their circles and saved the code in N.S.W. Hell even Rodeo N.Z. have a media spokes person and their are hammered every year by the anti's. I want all of you today to grab a cuppa, head outside by yourself and have a dam good think about what is happening to this beautiful sport. Because if nothing is done fast you all will be grabbing a cuppa, sitting outside and thinking to yourselves I should have done more .....   One upset grassroots L.P. from Timaru   Regards     Marek Dunne

The White Poodle reacted to Emotive in Open Letter To Craig Rendle
    Dear Craig.

    In My Opinion: Collateral Damage.

Like most in this sport, I watched last nights news report with interest because the negative publicity that the sport has been subjected to for nigh on two years has a direct effect on us all.

When you first came to prominence in this industry I like many others thought that your appointment would bring positive change. A change in attitude, and a new pathway that would benefit all. Most were disappointed. What we got was a vision that facilitated the building of an empire, anyone who criticised that vision was labeled "jealous" or a "trouble maker." We also got a new CEO and with him came the "Gagging Rule" which I believe was introduced intimidate anyone who criticised the new regime, namely you. Your vision was never inclusive, it was always about domination with collateral damage.  We have been experiencing the fallout of that vision in recent years which has brought us to this point.  Your interview last night was cowardly, hiding behind your front door, again blaming "jealousy" for the position you now find yourself in.

Jealous, let's look at that word in context. Are those who form the collateral damage group jealous of your success? the answer to that is no. There are many successful trainers in this country who have earned the respect of our industry. Trainers who have been far more successful than you and your partnership. One such trainer currently sits atop the strike rate list and has done for many years. There are numerous other examples but most do not rely on a saturation model. Is it the money? Everyone dreams of winning lotto. Every trainer's dream is to train that one special dog, but that's not what it's about either. So do they want to be tied down to two or three hundred dogs so they too can have wealth and notoriety? most definitely not. That's about ego. Jealousy is just an excuse for a situation that has been manufactured by your vision.

What scares the collateral damage group is their fear of being forced out of the industry by a business model devised to do exactly that. These are people who in some cases built this industry, people who have dedicated their whole lives to the sport, people who have sacrificed much to continue on, people whose absolute passion and love of the greyhound keep them turning up each race day. They have no ego, no wish to be the "Bigtime I Am", no, they just want to retain the right to earn a living in the sport they love. Be honest Craig, you could care less and quite frankly the industry could do without your ego. It's all about respect Craig.

There have been a number of positive changes since your resignation and I applaud the GRNZ for their efforts. There will always be changes which members may not support, in those cases, I would hope that the GRNZ takes member concerns on board and engages in constructive conversation.

It looks like the SPCA case is going to proceed, in the meantime, we all suffer.

After watching the TV3 News item just now, where the Green Party spokesperson called for the abolition of Greyhound Racing in NZ, coupled with the No Comment from the NZGRA and that the RIU are awaiting developments with no present plans to lay charges, it is imperative that the NZGRA immediately suspend the whole Cole Kennels racing activity until the outcome of the trial. They found it unbelievable that Cole was still racing and handling dogs at Wanganui today.
We must act to save the integrity of our code.
