Dalghar only served a small book in France before coming to NZ.  He only has 48 living foals from his first crop and 38 foals from his second.  The fact is he has a Sydney Saturday metro winner, a Perth provincial winner  and a Sydney provincial winner who should have won in town.  They will do better with time, such as Anthony Cummings' horse, Golden Organic.  Astara has a good record and proved her class in winning at Ellerslie in record time over the mile.
Also take in account, there aren't too many "star" mares in the books he covered, but he is a half to 2 champion sires, comes from one of the best families in the European stud book and was a good, fast racehorse in France and the UK.
Trainers who bought Dalghars' from the first crop, went back for more this year....so they obviously show ability.  I think he is fair value at the fee he stands for.  Brighthill is a good farm, family run and do a great job.

Check your facts, I posted on 11th June, the horse had won at Randwick [inner track called Kensington] by nearly 4 lengths......that's stressing them, on that track....he wins again today at Rosehill, up in company and on a track that still did not favour him, he is a very smart horse, so that's why I'm praising the stallion that is very very underrated. They go super over here in Oz, I wonder why?

Had a very interesting conversation at this week’s MM sales with a leading vendor on the subject of Super Easy. His question was why did this horse have a relatively good produce record in Oz and such a poor one in NZ?   Perhaps it’s the better tracks? Perhaps it’s the Aussie’s ability to recognise these horses are 3yos? Perhaps it’s because Kenny Rae had good luck with Prom Queen as a 2yo so every one in NZ  pushed them too early.... but the difference between the 2 countries with this stallion is quite stark...

Being a despised Aussie, I'd know a little bit more re Denmans' than you P4P........not many train on, and many fold under the slightest pressure. Usually Woodlands (now Darley) get it right, they were fabulous before a certain Pom turned up and stuck his oar in......but my point is, look at the horses behind WN, look at the 2nd horse, if all goes right it finishes much closer and the margin not so flattering, the wash up though is the time, my 2yo's can run that any TUE morning for Gods sake, and as you've ridden you'd know, sometimes when you release the brakes there is not a lot more there, in fact their cruising speed is their optimum.  Of course it's my opine, and I've tried to substantiate it, thats what good forums do, allow discourse and debate, without foul comments, let's hope we can continue like that......if only.

OK let’s put this win into perspective.  First up, it was a crap time...compared to,the R72 and the open sprint which went 1.09+....so this horse goes 59.07 (wouldn’t win at Wytchyproof.... but then times don’t mean anything in NZ I’ve been told) ...the second horse misses the start, crucial over a 1000m, then gets caught 3wide but still runs on..who knows with a fair start?  Mind you they were a poorly, educated bunch that raced today. The usual story race runs 5 minutes late, wouldn’t go to the barrier, wouldn’t load...yada yada yada. $5k in the NSW TAB win pool.
Oh but wait, the winner is owned in HKG (he may keep him here for a little while longer..oh goody) so he goes to Karaka millions.  More money leaving the country and no GST payable.

The biggest betting race in the World happens to be the Arima Kinen.
    1.    Run over 2500m furlongs every year at Nakayama Total wagering on the Arima Kinen in 2013 was JPY ¥35,088,387,600 (USD $334 million).
    2.    Turnover on the UK’s Grand National, (6907m) the biggest betting race outside Japan, is around GBP £100 million (USD $164 million)
3,    The Melbourne Cup (3200m) last year turnover in most populated states of New South Wales and Victoria was AUD $90.1 million (USD $80 million) although that does not include bets from
            the other states.
But this is what is interesting. You may have recently read that the VRC has introduced a new race worth 1600m for $6m where the public chose 10 of the 16 runners with the other 6 chosen by the VRC. Well check this out...
The Arima Kinen is a Grade I flat horse race in Japan open to Thoroughbreds which are three-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 2,500 metres (approximately 1 mile and 4 1⁄2 furlongs) at Nakayama Racecourse, and it takes place annually in late December. It is one of the two "All-Star" races in Japanese horse racing; the other is the Takarazuka Kinen in late June.
The event was first run in 1956, and it was initially titled the Nakayama Grand Prix . The following year it was renamed in memory of Yoriyasu Arima (1884–1957), the founder of the race. The distance was originally set at 2,600 metres, and it was shortened to the present length, 2,500 metres, in 1966.
The majority of the runners (10 out of 16) in the field are selected by a vote from racing fans, which must be a Japan Racing Association(JRA) horse. If at least one horse in top 10 decided not participating the race, the void will be filled with next available horse until 10 available runners are filled. The remainder of 6 (including National Association of Racing (NAR) and foreign-based horses) are determined by the amount of prize money won.
Until 1999 the Arima Kinen was open to Japanese trained horses only. However, the Japan Racing Association introduced a new condition in 2000 which allowed for the participation of a foreign trained horse, if it had won that year's Japan Cup (though, no horse eligible has ended up participating this race). The Arima Kinen was classed as a Domestic Grade I until 2006, and it was then promoted to an International Grade I in 2007. Consequently, it is now possible for more foreign trained horses to compete in the race. The maximum number of these was set at four in 2007, and this increased to six for the 2008 running.
There is another interesting piece of information to throw into the can. The VRC has also scheduled a race worth $400,000 over 4000m.

Only 5th run so pretty impressive LZ , they talking Dubai Sheema Classic so might see her go international in April. They seem keen on ARC from reports , be very different October in Paris , soft going , slow early pace or stop start kind of race with ton of traffic . Although Japanese very very unlucky not to win an Arc yet , they know what they need. They seem to run them in one or two lead up races in France when they go. Will be another great year of international racing in 2019.

Great punting race , like the Lincoln, Workingham , Stewards , Portland, Cambridgeshire  etc  as season rolls through up there. Puzzles for sure, punters love them. Certain stables hit them hard.
I read Robert Sangsters life story few years back, good read especially the way their team attacked the US sales in Keeneland  seventies and  80s. I think Brent Thomson  was his stable jockey riding the ones Barry Hills trained for him at one point.Sure he rode Gildoran for Sangster.
My grandparents and father did Littlewoods Pools weekly so I can claim some family connection the ownership of The Minstrel among others, they paid for maybe one evening feed at Ballydoyle during their lifetime.

Why wouldn't they do that  Aaron , example Ayr Gold Cup big handicap sprint in Scotland always massively oversubscribed. Simple solution  top X amount run Gold Cup , next X amount run in Silver Cup for less money and next X amount in Bronze Cup , don't think they have you didn't make field well done for trying cup though.. So 80 odd horses get to run on big day and equals 3 x huge turnover punters paradise 1 2 3 4 places races plus if you shop around get 1 to 6 places with some big outfits  . Same with Stewards Cup at Goodwood amoung others. Handicaps the lifeblood of rank and file punters.

Must admit LZ ,  the last paragraph is something I as a punter but more importantly as a racing fan  have a pang of guilt watching Singapore racing , I don't bother watching that utter rubbish sand dune crap  from Korea. Fact is there is no retirement life for most up there, Japan same for most , if Ferdinand didn't get a decent home the horse finishing last at Kawasaki on Tuesday nights isn't much of a show.Beautiful animals but brutal business at times , life's harsh but good on you for putting some money considerations aside and looking after the lifetime care of  horses you sell.
Likes of Colchester looked a handy horse in South Island , has ended up in Singapore via HK , I could have ran round Kranji quicker that him last week.
I don't know but with a good few of these horses not good enough for sale from NZ ,   are owners forced to discard them  too quickly and move on to next when if there was a decent programme for lower grade horses here they would find  their level and move up and down grades earning a bit to cover something towards costs with chance improving if they fnd  right trainer that suits them   but with how things are it's too expensive to bother keeping on with them. Bottom ranks HK and Singapore filled with these types. Some of those class 5 gallopers in Singapore as poor quality of racehorse you would struggle to find  but keep bumping round Kranji chipping away at owners billls keeping turnover going. These meetings here  midweek sometimes  7 maiden races  a turnoff  , I'd  rather a rating 65 with loads form to nut out.

Chris, I think you're a pretty good trainer...but on this issue you are way too close to be objective ...
Absolutely have to pay a levy...its called capital gains tax....and what I'm suggesting is this money not go into government coffers but into the racing industry - infrastructure and prizemoney because the "sold" individual is not going to have the opportunity to generate those funds for the industry that educated him. in fact there wont be enough funds generated by the POC tax to even cover half the prizemoney or infrastructure upgrades necessary to keep the industry sustainable...
And Chris, I own plenty...and I find it difficult to reconcile why I've kept going in NZ but I've now made a decision to remove all my horses...all 14 of them to Australia. Because in the big scheme of things, the trading side of the industry has had it too good for too long and has contributed to the unhealthy state the NZ domestic racing industry is in. I don't consider the argument re livelihoods and peripherals sufficiently compelling enough to think that trading is beneficial for the industry.
if it had been strategised around 10 to 15 years ago, I don't think the industry would be at the stage its at...and its now too late...in fact, its gone past sunset.  As we've seen over the past few months....WP has given himself an out...he gave everyone the opportunity to get behind the Messara report but no, there has been too much friction and disagreement...and now he can say "well I did give you an opportunity but you've blown it"....and do you think Jacinta will stump up sufficient funds to get things rolling?  I strongly doubt it.  WP had to appear to appease his benefactors ....
If the New Zealand owners association, trainers association and the breeders came together to drive the industry things may have been different...but no, not in NZ.  Too many individual agendas take precedence...as a combined force you could have made Government sit up and listen...but no, you let the Nationals ramble though 9 years of government without even a squeal...
NZ is too small to have both a trading industry and domestic racing...because this is what we have now....you all need to make a choice - either become 100% breeding/trading or tax exports for the benefit of a healthy domestic racing industry...you can't have your cake and eat it too!
In closing I've left the most important issue till last. To those who sell their animals without any thoughts for their welfare, they will have bad karma ....those who do give a dam, know where I'm coming from.  I find homes for mine..and those that can't be rehomed, I pay up for.  Traders who sell without a conscience to Singapore, Malaysia, Macau without a repatriation clause  .... well what can I wish for them?  I hope their next life is happy and most importantly,  profitable....yeah, right.

La Zip for years I have advocated for a levy on exported horses. Sadly this is a non starter mainly because our Racing Minister is beholden to the people who funds his Party enough to bump them over the 5% threshold ie the elite breeders and owners cartel. As Winston’s favourite mantra goes- FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL!

What compounds this problem are 2 issues.
Trading to Asia has killed the value of the Stud book.  As you say Insider, selling a colt to Malaysia will do nothing for your family. And anyone that wants to argue that a win in Singapore, Macau, Malaysia and to a degree Hong Kong enhances your family, go and take a dose of salts.
Secondly, we sell these horses, in the majority of cases, with no GST payable. And whilst this is a government policy,  it’s actually detrimental to our industry.  We’re asking the Government to see its way clear for funding but we’re sending our assets offshore (tax/levy free) for the benefit of other racing jurisdictions.  The majority of these horses have benefited from NZ industry facilities. As you all say, how many of those with trainers license are dependent on the trading market?  Yet apart from monthly track fees and the personal “benefit” of those trading, what recompense is there for the industry..?   We all complain about the lack of infrastructure and repairs, yet we let those take a benefit without paying.  NZB has made their money,A trainer will take his 10%, a bloodstock agent will take his cut, but where is the benefit for the industry?
We are selling our assets for no benefit, other than for those directly involved.  Yet we’re all paying....in one way or another.  Primarily these horses using our facilities for, their education And are not being sent to the races, denying the industry TAB revenue.
Im just reading through the list of Holders of A licenses...just noticed 1 who trains in the central district who trials with regularity  but has yet to have a race day starter...another up north who had a nice Group winner a week or so ago, has 25 in work yet only half a dozen for domestic racing...
A bitter pill to swallow, but it maybe time to adjust the status quo...in return for Government assistance we place an “exit” levy on exports to Asia.  These trainers who don’t have a set amount of starters yet have a trade horses, pay a hefty levy for their license.
Im sure the quality of the NZ reared horse has added value in Asia.... and if they want a continuity of supply, they need to pay. Otherwise the pond will dry up...and as we’re seeing now, breeders are dropping off like flies. What happen then?
Just as an example, The TABs in Australia ask everyone to pay them for putting on the Show via a point of consumption tax.....so this is no different.
Time to ask hard questions and implement a sustainable system to ensure the industry as a whole benefits, not just a few.

La Zip, you are 100% correct, trading has killed the domestic market and Asia has destroyed most NZ families.
Broodmares particularly and a lot of Stallions too.
Sadly on Thursday at the RT,R,  I just added another nail to the coffin of my own family by selling a nice colt to Malaysia at cost.
Fuck it were my thoughts at the time, and they haven't changed since.
