That could only mean that you do. Time for a check up and while you're at it, you could google for  a well credentialed couch

As I said, a very common man, I feel for Mrs Berri, somehow I feel she left some time back.

Not sure what more the horse could’ve done, he’s crossed them on the bridle, walked them across the top and sprinted home without being extended.

I know we’re a nation of knockers but anyone putting the slipper into that performance is just green eyed and bitter.

Being a despised Aussie, I'd know a little bit more re Denmans' than you P4P........not many train on, and many fold under the slightest pressure. Usually Woodlands (now Darley) get it right, they were fabulous before a certain Pom turned up and stuck his oar in......but my point is, look at the horses behind WN, look at the 2nd horse, if all goes right it finishes much closer and the margin not so flattering, the wash up though is the time, my 2yo's can run that any TUE morning for Gods sake, and as you've ridden you'd know, sometimes when you release the brakes there is not a lot more there, in fact their cruising speed is their optimum.  Of course it's my opine, and I've tried to substantiate it, thats what good forums do, allow discourse and debate, without foul comments, let's hope we can continue like that......if only.

  3. OK let’s put this win into perspective.  First up, it was a crap time...compared to,the R72 and the open sprint which went 1.09+....so this horse goes 59.07 (wouldn’t win at Wytchyproof.... but then times don’t mean anything in NZ I’ve been told) ...the second horse misses the start, crucial over a 1000m, then gets caught 3wide but still runs on..who knows with a fair start?  Mind you they were a poorly, educated bunch that raced today. The usual story race runs 5 minutes late, wouldn’t go to the barrier, wouldn’t load...yada yada yada. $5k in the NSW TAB win pool.

Oh but wait, the winner is owned in HKG (he may keep him here for a little while longer..oh goody) so he goes to Karaka millions.  More money leaving the country and no GST payable.

  4. Your stars aligned? God help us all,  none of you will answer a simple question, how did these 'drugs' get into the horses system? Did they eat their bedding, or lay on their bedding? did they rub their hides against contaminated posts?  all you simply have to say is 'I don't know'....or I do know.......and come forth.......what I will disclose, as unlike you, my background is in law, being a legal secretary formerly working with a high profile lawyer very involved in an industry matter!......#seekingthetruth

  5. However the 'evidence' does not clarify how the 'drugs' or their metabolites entered the horses system, I've run this past many here in Oz, and everyone, most with more than 40/50 years experience with thoroughbreds have never witnessed horses eating contaminated straw/shavings/sawdust.......they also concur, none of their horses will lay on contaminated bedding, nor mine, however there are drugs of course with no odour, hence my question, the answer may well be a pineapple.

There’s plenty of evidence to the contrary actually La Zip.

Clearly I’m not going to breach privacy here by naming names but recently a gypsy horse ( trained by Mr A ) tested positive to Tramadol, Citalopram, Metropolol and Temazepam.

If you don’t know each drug best you google it, but suffice to say I immediately said the contamination must have come from a licensed trainer. You’ll work out why I arrived at that conclusion.

Based on credible overseas evidence the RIU investigated this case, and found another trainer ( B )  had regularly been using the box this animal was stabled in to relieve himself, and when questioned/tested the second trainer was being prescribed Citalopram, Tramadol, Temazapam and Metoprolol.

Furthermore, as it applies in the Rae case, with methamphetamine and amphetamine you have a drug that’s fat soluble, water soluble, and a known passive or environmental contaminant.

    The evidence is compelling.

Professor Hall and Ms Moffatt are very learned and capable people, no one pulls the wool over their eyes.

I'd be very interested to learn if the findings suggested/implied the horses digested said Pharma drugs or absorbed through skin via bedding, can you assist?

  7. Of course they do/are, we know that, it's not the problem it's how you deal with the problem.......that's why the racing authorities here are doing something positive, you struggle with stakes of 6k to the winner, in many races here 2k goes to animal welfare.....someone gave a damn BarryB.......your comments re reality ? really?

  8. Why can't the owners of Ken's horse sue CJC?  A good barrister would have a field day would he/she not?........in their terms of lease to Ken did they state security was Ken's responsibly? if they did Ken is at fault, but nowhere in the JCA report did I read that......go for it Ken, however as for the piffle re horses eating contaminated bedding, what a load of cobblers, those of you that work with horses know full well they wont go near bedding with a urine smell.......I'm referring to other incidents here, mentioned in this report......shavings, straw etc, mine wont lay down in dirty bedding let alone eat it........and then there is the raceday stalls, and contaminated troughs.......what next?........Hans Christian Anderson.

  9. Reality is what you live Barry B, you don't vote Labour, but you got a Labour Gov......go figure.......if you look at the various racing jurisdictions here in Oz, you will find every race programmed has a welfare component attached, in VIC these amounts are substantial, as too, NSW.......here in QLD they are to begin with the welfare to bring into line with other states......welfare of the thoroughbred is paramount, the standardbred code used to be horrific, they have lifted their game.

I hate live export, not the actual act as I eat meat, but the cruelty involved of weeks at sea in horrible heat, so fix that and the fools at the other end that kill the animal in the cruelest of fashion and live export becomes viable......will it happen?...no, these analogies are important as you don't seem to get it.......I deplore people that knowingly, knowingly send their horses to a poor life, or should I say end.....for their own monetary gain, upgrade the Range Rover, pay the private school fees , overseas holidays, bigger house.......so please don't throw these idiotic comparisons BarryB......we also have abattoirs here for feral camels, feral horses, and goats......you see, there are hundreds of thousands of these animals, and it's like ivory BarryB.....if we educated the end user in ASIA to not value ivory for their own sick ideology then the Rhino would not be endangered and/or the magical, mystical Elephants.......educate the idiots that value horse meat and same results.....but I stand by my posts, or the bubble you mention, I don't put my bank balance in front of my love and compassion for the horses I earned a living from, or not in NZ...as that's an oxymoron...isn't it?

Why wouldn't they do that  Aaron , example Ayr Gold Cup big handicap sprint in Scotland always massively oversubscribed. Simple solution  top X amount run Gold Cup , next X amount run in Silver Cup for less money and next X amount in Bronze Cup , don't think they have you didn't make field well done for trying cup though.. So 80 odd horses get to run on big day and equals 3 x huge turnover punters paradise 1 2 3 4 places races plus if you shop around get 1 to 6 places with some big outfits  . Same with Stewards Cup at Goodwood amoung others. Handicaps the lifeblood of rank and file punters.

RR, I owned a daughter of an Ayr Gold Cup winner...her mother, Brief Star,  was Robert Sangster's first Group one winner...so this race holds a special place for me...but great example of how good programming can work for everyone...

Why should owners who invest in the industry, get lucky on their investment have to pay a levy, you have to be joking.

Will they get reimbursed with the 5 that weren’t any good?

As Barry says, they are supporting the livelihoods of many in one way or the other, and you want to penalise them?

Chris, I think you're a pretty good trainer...but on this issue you are way too close to be objective ...

Absolutely have to pay a levy...its called capital gains tax....and what I'm suggesting is this money not go into government coffers but into the racing industry - infrastructure and prizemoney because the "sold" individual is not going to have the opportunity to generate those funds for the industry that educated him. in fact there wont be enough funds generated by the POC tax to even cover half the prizemoney or infrastructure upgrades necessary to keep the industry sustainable...

And Chris, I own plenty...and I find it difficult to reconcile why I've kept going in NZ but I've now made a decision to remove all my horses...all 14 of them to Australia. Because in the big scheme of things, the trading side of the industry has had it too good for too long and has contributed to the unhealthy state the NZ domestic racing industry is in. I don't consider the argument re livelihoods and peripherals sufficiently compelling enough to think that trading is beneficial for the industry.

if it had been strategised around 10 to 15 years ago, I don't think the industry would be at the stage its at...and its now too late...in fact, its gone past sunset.  As we've seen over the past few months....WP has given himself an out...he gave everyone the opportunity to get behind the Messara report but no, there has been too much friction and disagreement...and now he can say "well I did give you an opportunity but you've blown it"....and do you think Jacinta will stump up sufficient funds to get things rolling?  I strongly doubt it.  WP had to appear to appease his benefactors ....

If the New Zealand owners association, trainers association and the breeders came together to drive the industry things may have been different...but no, not in NZ.  Too many individual agendas take precedence...as a combined force you could have made Government sit up and listen...but no, you let the Nationals ramble though 9 years of government without even a squeal...

NZ is too small to have both a trading industry and domestic racing...because this is what we have now....you all need to make a choice - either become 100% breeding/trading or tax exports for the benefit of a healthy domestic racing industry...you can't have your cake and eat it too!

In closing I've left the most important issue till last. To those who sell their animals without any thoughts for their welfare, they will have bad karma ....those who do give a dam, know where I'm coming from.  I find homes for mine..and those that can't be rehomed, I pay up for.  Traders who sell without a conscience to Singapore, Malaysia, Macau without a repatriation clause  .... well what can I wish for them?  I hope their next life is happy and most importantly,  profitable....yeah, right.

La Zip, you are 100% correct, trading has killed the domestic market and Asia has destroyed most NZ families.

Broodmares particularly and a lot of Stallions too.

Sadly on Thursday at the RT,R,  I just added another nail to the coffin of my own family by selling a nice colt to Malaysia at cost.

Fuck it were my thoughts at the time, and they haven't changed since.

What compounds this problem are 2 issues.

Trading to Asia has killed the value of the Stud book.  As you say Insider, selling a colt to Malaysia will do nothing for your family. And anyone that wants to argue that a win in Singapore, Macau, Malaysia and to a degree Hong Kong enhances your family, go and take a dose of salts.

Secondly, we sell these horses, in the majority of cases, with no GST payable. And whilst this is a government policy,  it’s actually detrimental to our industry.  We’re asking the Government to see its way clear for funding but we’re sending our assets offshore (tax/levy free) for the benefit of other racing jurisdictions.  The majority of these horses have benefited from NZ industry facilities. As you all say, how many of those with trainers license are dependent on the trading market?  Yet apart from monthly track fees and the personal “benefit” of those trading, what recompense is there for the industry..?   We all complain about the lack of infrastructure and repairs, yet we let those take a benefit without paying.  NZB has made their money,A trainer will take his 10%, a bloodstock agent will take his cut, but where is the benefit for the industry?

We are selling our assets for no benefit, other than for those directly involved.  Yet we’re all paying....in one way or another.  Primarily these horses using our facilities for, their education And are not being sent to the races, denying the industry TAB revenue.

Im just reading through the list of Holders of A licenses...just noticed 1 who trains in the central district who trials with regularity  but has yet to have a race day starter...another up north who had a nice Group winner a week or so ago, has 25 in work yet only half a dozen for domestic racing...

A bitter pill to swallow, but it maybe time to adjust the status quo...in return for Government assistance we place an “exit” levy on exports to Asia.  These trainers who don’t have a set amount of starters yet have a trade horses, pay a hefty levy for their license.

Im sure the quality of the NZ reared horse has added value in Asia.... and if they want a continuity of supply, they need to pay. Otherwise the pond will dry up...and as we’re seeing now, breeders are dropping off like flies. What happen then?

Just as an example, The TABs in Australia ask everyone to pay them for putting on the Show via a point of consumption tax.....so this is no different.

Time to ask hard questions and implement a sustainable system to ensure the industry as a whole benefits, not just a few.

  13. Quality of horses is a major issue.  What bring people to the races? What drives the media? Good horses....WINX.

I will admit substandard management is also a huge issue...but if you don’t have quality horses, why go to the races...

As I have said for 10 years +, and what 99% of NZ racing stakeholders are in denial about.....trading has killed domestic racing.

Every other “excuse” is just to cover up the denials....

The fatal flaw in the M report is that it hinges on “land grabbing”, simply seizing clubs / members assets whether that be cash, improvements, equipment or land.

Those assets are then handed over to NZTR.

My question would be why would anyone trust NZTR to do anything useful or productive given their performance over the last ten years ?

Furthermore why would anyone believe in the leadership of the chairman Alan Jackson, a man who’s been given so many opportunities but who’s played and missed every ball he’s faced in racing.

I might also add that seizing Avondale is going to be fun when the majority of it’s zoned “green belt” and community sports grounds.

When John Banks was mayor he said it couldn’t be done (rezoned), so how the F will they persuade a left wing local government led by Phil Goff and Penny Halse to rezone it. It can’t happen.

I did laugh on the night of the M report launch when Russell Warwick and Peter Walker ( loudly ) hailed this seizing of clubs “net assets” a grand solution, so now their club Ellerslie can hand over the 40 million cash they’re sitting on, and the 60 million they’ve got coming....plus they can sell the hill.....and we’re nearly there as an industry :)

Go Russell and Peter, love your work and I’m delighted that you didn’t see Messara as the Trojan horse he is.

To conclude, let’s not stop at land grabbing the racing clubs net assets, I’m more of a Robin Hood than a Shylock, so let’s grab a few acres off the fat rich pricks, Waikato Stud ( and Garry with two Rs ) we’ll have 500 acres of yours thanks, Brendan and Jo, you’re good for 250 acres, and Gerry Harvey, let’s have half your joint too.

There we go, all problems solved.

How many more chances do you give Jackson?  Why I'm lost to the industry as an owner is simply down to this, if they had started retrenching, and I mean starting at the top, I would have stayed as it would've been seen to be a start, something positive, but nothing, their salaries are offensive to the rest of us, so Peters is a failure himself as he the racing minister could have directed retrenchments immediately, but he didn't, and Jackson and his ilk keep on draining the well.......What a joke.

  15. Yet I read with interest in this morning’s edition of ANZ Bloodstock News, Garry Chittick pleading with WP to get a hurry on with the stakes increase .... because his business is being effected... can t invest in new stallions.

From what I can see, they had a couple of pretty good result at today’s RTR....been top or close to the top of the table at Karaka over the last 10years or so...

shame he didn’t rattle the cage a couple of years ago.
