KHAFEEF, who was fourth in the steeplechase, was bred by Shadwell up here and I'm sure they had bigger ambitions than running round northern New Zealand over fences.

He raced in France in 2019 and won a 2400m race at Le Touquet but that was his only win in four starts.

If you want to revitalise NZ jump racing come to the UK and Ireland and spread the word - at Stratford (the home of Mr Shakespeare) this afternoon the Class 4 handicap chase nets the winning owner less than £4k (or $8000) yet you have jumps races for £15k. Without being unkind, I'm sure there are plenty of NH horses up here who could compete with your chasers and hurdlers - I mean, if Willie Mullins sent over a plane load of his third-raters, he'd probably clean up.

Why not create a satellite yard for British and Irish jumpers in NZ - again, it's an alternative to our summer jumping for the fast ground types. Plenty of logistical issues but where there's a will there's usually a dead person (sorry).

Have a look at the French racing model - in France they have meetings with trotting, flat turf, ordinary jumps and cross country jumps races in the provinces. Imagine a venue where all four exist and you could stage any kind of meeting you like. I have to say the French trotting races (both Monte and Attele which mean ridden and attached so one is where there's a jockey and the other where there's a driver) seem well attended for all some of the tracks look to be in grotty industrial estates.

Just a few thoughts from a long way away but I enjoy jump racing and there's a place for it. I don't know how many of you watched the Grand National last weekend - it's not the race it was (that's another debate) but it's still visually spectacular. Run the Great Northern or the National for $2,000,000 and invite foreign runners - make it the jump equivalent of the Melbourne Cup.

Final thought - the grass roots - pony club racing, point to points - both have to be nourished and developed to keep a flow of jockeys and horses. Import two or three jumping stallions from up here.

Lovely ideas, Stodge, but the jumps game is kaput here.  One year, two, but its finished.  Doesn't fit the agenda of the management - much as the idea of seeing numbers of UK/Irish horses would be hugely exciting for some - but not enough to change some very fixed opinions.

All the money in the world poured into stakes do not cover up the major cracks we have in this industry .

But it seems all you ever hear from the big names within the industry is how great things are and it's a great time to be involved .

Why is it no one , and I mean no one , within the hierarchy or one of the big players have the character to come out and start being honest , because until that starts nothing is ever going to be solved . You know giving critique doesn't have to be a negative .

It's fantastic the direction stakes are going but it breaks my heart that these real issues within our sport as Scooby says , just dealt with bullshit and waffle .

No one ever says right enough is enough , we are going to deal with these issues once and for all .

Or as I suspect , is everybody just too busy counting their dollars and don't want to rock the boat .

Please someone stand up and show some leadership , no not some , how about true leadership .

I have to hope that Entain realise - if they haven't already  - what a lame duck they are supporting.

Increased funding is great for we stakeholders, we are lucky to have the chance to run for real money...but this continued ineptitude has to be pulled into line.

If it is correct what Leggy has said that they chose to use their own grass instead of the Strathayr  product MegAyr its hard to understand why.

But don't worry sugar lips will spin a good story and everyone will believe him.

    It's correct.

Sergent Major , impressive winner of the 2yo race at Trentham a couple of Saturdays ago has been sold , sold to Ozzie Kheir for a 7 figure sum , runs in the Sires Produce on Saturday the xferes to Waller or Maher .

For all the increase in stakes money it is disappointing that it isn't stopping good horses being sold offshore .

What more can be done to retain these horses ?

In short - improve programming/date structure,  fix tracks,  and upgrade jockey standards.

Has been thrashed around here and elsewhere, but all the money currently thrown around [ and it is great for the beleaguered owner/trainer, make no mistake about that ]  as the headpost states, isn't stopping nice horses being sold offshore.

Also mentioned here and elsewhere, throwing money at a flawed business model isn't overly clever.

Does weight carried make a difference Pam?

and I’m not being flippant - just a few different views expressed on this and I’m interested in the view of someone in the business.

Can do.  But very much an individual matter, horses are not peas in a pod.  Some may not be able to perform at their best above a certain impost, others don't seem to be fazed at all.

There's no doubt that the weights allocated and carried decades ago did matter...but that's when handicaps were, well, handicaps.

The Tab Racing Club bought the following horses from Karaka:

Lot 5: Hello Youmzain Filly - Tony Pike

    Lot 50: Per Incanto Colt - James/Wellwood

Lot 79: Ardrossan Filly - Stephen Marsh

    Lot 203: Toronado Filly - O'Sullivan/Scott

    Lot 358: Savabeel Colt - Walker/Bergerson

Lot 494: So You Think Filly - Ritchie/Murray

    Lot 586: Ardrossan Filly - O'Sullivan/Scott

Lot 593: Proisir Filly - Ballymore - not sure whether it's for Pam in NZ or Mike in Melbourne.

The lot 5 filly is listed as Pike/Canterbury.     How does that work?

  7. I feel that vendors were possibly more realistic in their expectations under the older format of Premier, Select and Festival.

Lower offers, although disappointing for breeders, were expected in Festival at least.    Many of the offerings I saw yesterday would have been more realistically sold on Gavelhouse, at a fraction of the preparation costs.

Surprising, as said, to see Ribchester seemingly not wanted.

Certainly a precedent set after the stewards report mentions slips in several races at Ellerslie and various comments from jockeys. I wonder how many other meetings would have continued in those circumstance. I wonder if Reefton would have carried on with that number of comments from jockeys.

There doesn't have to be a legitimate slip to abandon Reefton.

I understand NZTR have contracted Dean McKenzie to determine how many tracks will be needed in each region into the future.  So expect another list of .course closures very soon.  All this while Aussie, especially NSW, is increasing funding to provincial and country clubs.  Their justification is  they can see the important role the regions play in supplying their future trainers and jockeys.  Pity our NZTR don't have similar foresight. Instead they continue to go down a single lane road heavily subsidize racing at the main centre clubs.  I await Mr McKenzie's list with some trepidation.

    It just gets worse.
