Justitia got a reaction from Baz (NZ) in Your Solution for Racing
I have been doing a lot of reading during covid mostly about racing.  We must not forget WHY the New Zealand Racing Board (now RITA) was set up in the first place  -   Racing Act 2003                     8   Objectives of Board.                              The objectives of the Board are                         (a) to promote the racing industry; and                         (b) to facilitate and promote racing betting and sports betting; and                          (c) to maximise its profits for the long-term benefit of New Zealand racing.    So, my solution for racing is made up of ideas read (some radical) and basic business sense  - 1     RITA - Replace by a board consisting of 1 member from each code, 1 from sport and 1 independent (Accountant or Lawyer). I read a                   suggestion of no chairman and that each member takes turns chairing meetings.  This would also be cost effective. 2     TAB - Outsource with stipulation that a certain percentage of every dollar be returned to the board for distribution to codes & sport.                   Much as I am reluctant to get rid of a Kiwi Icon I consider it is not functioning as intended.                   Platform is unreliable in present form with limited understanding of customers needs.                     Management and expenses are unsupportable and suggested savings are only a short term stopgap, very short term at that. 3     Trackside - One office in Wellington to run the country.  Limited salary positions with contract labor servicing racedays.  Contractors                    are totally cost effective in the long term and rates are negotiable.   This works very successfully for Sky TV  which is a much larger organization.                   Reintroduce free-to-air  -  Helps to capture new customers and caters to biggest age group percentage of punters 4     Trackside Radio - to continue      5     No CEOs  ( Catastrophically Expensive Overhead )  -   Can be replaced by a manager of Trackside answerable to the board. 6     No Bonuses or equivalent   So what is your solution ?          No negative comments please and stick to subject.

RITA plans to service South Island meetings from a team based in Christchurch, which will result in 11 of 13 positions in Dunedin being disestablished. Increased efficiencies will be gained through cross-skilling of roles.
A reliable source tells me that the Christchurch manager has been touting this for some years.  The last time he tried it they were flying in staff to southland meetings from all over the country and the travel and accommodation budgets blew out.
RITA has confirmed it will not reinstate racing on its AM and FM radio frequencies which were suspended last month.     -
Just like when they ceased freeview TV they will lose a lot of punters.  But then again did they even bother asking their punters ?

So just who is advising Mr McKenzie ?  The same managers whose previous decisions have brought us to the current position, therefore will get the same result.
Is there anyone auditing their decisions so in another year when still in the same fix, these decision makers are finally held to account.

Not only should every person who was a part of the process be sacked, there should also be an investigation into the whole process?

If ever there was a time to get back to basics, this is it.
Wall to wall racing! Get lost to that idea, is my opinion

    Government Pro’s -
MPI is helping Winston ensure closure of Tracks.
MPI is helping TAB as after their last debacle (bonus bet botch-up) looked likely to reduce their payouts to the codes
    Con’s -
MPI has now created thousand’s more clients for Work and Income
MPI has now robbed the IRD of taxes for a reported 1.6 billion to GDP annually
MPI has now put racing into lockdown for two months not one.

There may be some trainers who shut up shop early for the season but they are only a drop-in-the-bucket of trainers who’s livelihood depends on racing.
By far the biggest majority of trainers have small teams and work them themselves so isolation is not the problem.

WHO is advising MPI and convinced them to change their minds.

My bet is on the Greyhounds be up and running first.

    Steady Scooby.
Ken Kelso rang me about this, and he's a sensible measured man, but he's had enough.
David Ellis approached me about the same thing, and he went further and said he was contemplating having only a farming business in NZ and his horse operations in Singapore ( there was another lesser reason he wanted to keep horses in NZ but I don't think it's appropriate to divulge this as it's private and not terribly relevant ).
Chris Wood is a good measure of the Cambridge racing community and his feelings are well known and appreciated here.
There is a groundswell of dissent and discontent across the industry, and trouble is brewing, it's being fomented by the failure of our alleged leaders to act constructively, despite the ludicrous promises made and the extraordinary hope that was attributed to and invested in Alan Jackson.
Cafe might be repetitive, and the odd ignoramus might vent a bit here whilst devoid of facts, but at the same time Cafe is a window for the disillusioned to look into and to read then understand the complexities involved, and who's to blame for the various elements contributing to our dilemma.
There will be change soon enough, particularly close to election time, and more so if Winston appears to be in a position to exert leverage over the other parties, but in the interim we need to keep talking, and looking at solutions that might help change the structure of the industry for our benefit.
I'd close by saying that when the remarkably placid Tony Pike starts to flex his muscles and openly criticise the incumbents then you can reasonably presume the entire industry is ready to do some dirty work, or as they politely say in the trenches, some heavy lifting, and it won't be aimed at NZTR ( I think everyone has given up on them, an they're not really to blame for our fundamental problems) this heavy lifting will be very much aimed at the NZRB and it'll be a lot more effective and beneficial than Fairtax was.
On that note Scooby might I suggest you let the disenchanted vent, it's harmless but it's an important part of generating the groundswell required for change.

It's a 100% return if you work for either the NZRB or NZTB and that's half the problem. So much money that is not  filtering through to stakes etc instead its being lost in wages which in turn is spent outside of the industry.

They're hoping to get some people tuning in at 7.30 and deciding to have a few lazy each ways on some greyhounds from The Gardens.

I have to say that, in general, I think Trackside is a pretty good service.  It's hard to cater to, and appease, an audience with such wide-ranging views on what should be shown, but I admit that from time to time some things happen on the show which suggest a lack of racing nouse among the presenters / production team.

The thing that surprises me most is their seeming desire to want to get rid of any presenters that have a strong opinion or personality, yet retain / encourage those lacking in those traits.  It is so much more entertaining to watch when someone with some character is presenting - I guess these people, in general, are harder to control / filter and therefore a more risky proposition in terms of speaking up about something they don't like or agree with.  I don't mind so much when someone is a little dull in their presentation style, different things appeal to different viewers, (e.g. a lot of people love listening to Steve Davis but I find it like listening to someone else's 6 year-old kid who hasn't taken his ADD medication - different strokes for different folks) but it does annoy me when a presenter says something which shows a clear ignorance or lack of knowledge about racing.

Justitia reacted to hsvman in Auckland - $400 per starter?
Auckland are trying to make it so that every horse no matter what ability will be able to earn some money each week/start. , at the moment a lot of horses go around week to week struggling to get a cheque say 1 in 5 starts or worse and sometimes when the battler horse finally runs a place they only end up with around $300 . Their aim is to increase both these starter payments and stakes in the future , small steps tho be patient . I'm sure you've owned or most people have owned  a lot more battling horses than good ones so your average loss on a horse will be less than what it has been in the past. With such low horse numbers in the north they needed to try something to either keep most horses and trainers in the game. Racing for the higher stakes they have tryed but so many horses people couldn't compete or earn a check so either sold or sacked those horses and a lot of hobbie trainers which used to make up a fair chunk of feilds have given the game away. Which means less starters less turnover. Those trainers may or may not return but at least with this payment to every horse and train may keep more poeple in the game.if as many trainers and and owners leave the game in the next ten years at the past ten years there only be about 30-40 racing each week.at least Auckland is trying something different rather than sitting back and watching racing fall apart.

No.  I was being serious.  I see nothing wrong with being a lift operator and greenkeeper, then moving onto human resources.  There's not enough information to make a call on this guys suitability for the role, but he spent time with another organisation as a human resource advisor prior to joining NZRB.  Since leaving NZRB he's publicly demonstrated himself to be a competitive type and also a winner.  He was probably too good for the NZRB job.  Just imagine some of these ex postmen trying to compete on something like The Block.
What kind of background do you want the guy to have?  In business I've employed people with years of learning and time in the industry behind them.  Some of these have turned out to be absolute duds.  I've hired people with no industry experience and little specific job related training who have turned out to be superstars.
