I see what you mean with the KFC comparison GONSTA but would an advertising agency use fat Albert in a KFC TV advertising campaign? They probably should as that would be a fair representation but they would never do so as it sends out all the wrong messages. Same with Coco Cola advertising. They routinely show lots of young trim people jumping around at the beach but when you look at the amount of sugar in Coke a more accurate reflection would be fat Albert eating KFC and drinking coke.

I agree with the thread starter. Not only are a fair proportion obese,they also invariably walk with a limp favouring one leg. Belly out to here is not a good look in any sport....except sumo. If you can't look after yourself,how can you look after a racing dog with all it's requirements? It's an unprofessional look. Surely another handler can be used until Mr Blob measures up? I see some venues have handlers wearing coloured coats etc to match the race number of their charge. Very professional look. The issue here is not helped either by a "security guard" limping alongside the handlers who looks like he lives by the counter at Valentines. Guy looks like he'd have a heart attack if he had to walk further than the letterbox. What will the guard do if any offender decides to walk away briskly? "please bad guy,wait for me to catch up". Greyhound racing is increasing each year. If you want to sell it to non greyhound people,you need to improve the image. If you had fat Albert on the gate puffing away on his fag with HATE tattooed on his knuckles,you will have sold an image,but is it the image you want to sell?

If bookies have set the fixed odds market with five or six paying under even money for a place then hows the tote looking? If you won't use the tote as your bet will kill the pool then surely you need to look at the better races with bigger pools? Most trackside presenters wouldn't know value if it jumped up and bit them on the bum. As Crucible says,they invariably describe anything that is not favourite as "value"..even if it's not.

If your logic works for you with your betting Brodie then more power to you. I've seen you say it is extremely difficult to consistently win off the gallops. I personally find it extremely difficult to win consistently off low grade low value harness races. So many question marks over fitness and motivation etc etc etc. At least with the All Stars you know they will be 100% nailed down for the big one's and with no question marks about motivation. If the All Stars winning is as predictable as you say then surely there is a way of winning on the punt with them? I personally thought the $3.80 Piccadilly Princess paid to beat Golden Goddess was nice. Did you see Piccadilly Princess beat GG at their previous start?. Can you see a horse to beat Lazarus in the Derby? The All Stars all can't be paying $1.10

You shoot your own acquirement down in flames. Talk about contradicting. The races are predictable but there are no such things as guaranteed winners. What does that mean Brodie? I can only speak for myself but I get a buzz from winning money off any bloody thing. If I won $1000 off a $10 bet it still has the same monetary profit value as winning $1090 off a $100 bet. Still spends the same. I try not to get emotional about money. I also haven't had many certificates from the TAB for picking $20 winners etc. I honestly thought you knew a thing or two about betting. Don't you like money? If you did you'd be all over All Stars runners like a fly on brown stuff. You don't like the All Stars and you don't like predictable winners so as a punter you don't bet and just whine instead. Hows that working for you? I can tell you this. I can watch a group one race without betting on it and really enjoy what unfolds. If the winner pays sod all it does not detract from the quality of the race. I just don't get that same feel in a low value low class unpredictable race elsewhere. If you do,then good luck to you. With respect Brodie,you need to examine your own logic.

Why would you expect more from the tooth fairy than me Brodie? Are you a narcissist? Is that $1.10 a guaranteed winner? If so,why not put the house on it? Why not anchor it in trifecta's,first four's and quaddies etc? If I was a $50 win punter I would never put that on a $1.10 shot but I would look for value elsewhere in the race. Perhaps a place bet. It's not that I enjoy the All Stars. What I do enjoy is seeing great horses and big races and I especially enjoy the fact I can back them with confidence. The $1.20 on Hughie Green was looking a bit sick as soon as M.M handed up to it's main opposition on Friday. Can you imagine the All Stars doing that especially in a G1? Yes,it's your prerogative not to bet. Save your money for the very exciting and oh so predictable elite races at Otaki. So you're not going to bet on Derby night? So no more bitching about the All Stars winning more group one's a few hours later?

Clearly comprehension is an issue with you Brodie as several others have pointed out. Where exactly did I attack Robert Dunn? I described him as a magnificent trainer. Is that your definition of "attacking?" I merely pointed out the difference between the two top trainers in regard to targeting the big money races. Yes some punters will not bet in races where there is a raging hot fav All Star or otherwise. Others will just put more on. If the All Stars withdrew all the runners on Derby night do you honestly believe betting turnover would increase? If you believe that then the chances are you are still putting teeth under your pillow hoping for a visit and $2 from the tooth fairy.

So Mark Purdon is selfish now? Human beings have lots of emotions when they win a Group one classic elite race. I didn't know guilt should now be added to the list of emotions. Robert Dunn gives more support to clubs than Mark Purdon? Sorry I didn't realize Robert was running a charity. Last time I looked Robert Dunn was doing very well out of harness racing. Race 7. 250k G1 Great Northern Derby. Three All Stars runners. Clear top two favs. Race 8. 50k Auckland FFA. One All Star runner. Likely favourite. Race 9. 20k pace. No All Stars runners. Race 10. 20k pace. No All Stars runners. Those numbers highlight the targeting of high value elite races. There is no accident about these figures. Just for the record. I understand the small amounts being wagered but what comes first? The chicken or the egg. If the races are that pointless,then why have them at all? I've watched a fair bit of exciting American harness racing over the years. Not much of that involved veterans going around for peanuts at Yonkers. If you're going to deliver a crap product the chances are punters won't bet. Why don't they offer good quality American harness instead? There is plenty available at Saratoga,The Meadowlands,Balmoral Park etc, It would also be helpful if the NZ presenters actually had a better understanding of the betting odds. They seem to know that 1-9 equals a very hot favourite but quickly drown after that.They are relatively new to the game and are only familiar with parimutuel betting. Their limited knowledge of the horses racing is also not helpful. Not sure why you'd say "interesting to note" etc as if it's a conspiracy or I'm being less than honest . Fact is I'd rather bet on the NZ TAB mostly because it's much easier and faster to withdraw funds. I'm not a big punter in terms of bet amounts so the poor fixed odds offerings of the NZ TAB don't come into play for me. The NZ TAB does not offer fixed odds betting on the American racing anyway. As a harness racing fan I also have a preference for wanting to see more harness racing on TV. We are not competing with the greyhounds very well in my opinion. They are increasing. We are decreasing.

I have a nice memory of meeting a beautiful young lady at a place called Blackball. Not to be confused with Blueball which was also present at the time. The Blackball Hilton even seemed like a five star hotel after a few pints of home brew and a delicious possum casserole. She went on to make a lovely horse trainers wife but just for a brief moment she was fortunate enough to have a brutally handsome man to play spin the bottle with. I told her how lucky she was at the time. I feel confident she still looks back with fondness reminiscing about those 52 seconds.

If they are guilty of any wrong doing what a post I would be with you looking for a hang mans rope but we cant use magnificent achievements as evidence of wrong doing. Can we? We all love the game. I'm all in favour of using every available method in the world to catch drug cheats. Where ever you find money in large amounts, there will always be cheats looking for ways to grab more than their share. Always has been and always will be. Believe it or not I'm not a big fan of blind faith. Love and religion have a lot to answer for. I choose to believe that the All Stars have raised the bar to such a height that our sport is evolving for it's betterment. Their horses are faster and stronger. They are invariably very well driven but to be fair some are so dominant you get the feeling they could be poorly driven and still win. The blue magic debacle was huge for Mark Purdon. He shamed his highly respected family to epic proportions. He saw two people take their own life. One was a close friend. That chaptor must still give him nightmares. I think it's a massive credit to him that he has picked himself up and is now better than ever. It makes no sense that he of all people would entertain revisiting the worst period of his life. I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt until someone can prove otherwise. I will keep the faith pardon the pun and keep enjoying some of the best horses I've ever seen race. How good is Our Dream About Me? I was left gob smacked looking at the TV with it's win on Have faith in me's Miracle Mile day. I don't think I've ever seen a young horse do that anywhere in the world. Just breath taking. More of the same please.

Anyone bet on these races? I have a wee nibble. Hard to get to excited about 11 year old horses that haven't won sod all in their last six starts. Having said that you have to wonder what is going on at our TAB with the broadcasting of American races. Last year we had American gallops on three or four times a week usually covering at least ten races each time. Lets say around 40 races a week. Now they have stopped showing them altogether. Were they that big a flop or has there been another conflict behind the scenes? A couple of years ago Jess Davison? of Trackside fronted the American harness broadcasts here. They were on in the mornings on the weekends. I really enjoyed them. They covered meetings from all the big tracks with the best drivers. Then they just disappeared. Then we were offered the 10 race card from Yonkers every Tuesday. Who could blame some NZ punters for believing low stakes Yonkers is the only harness venue used by the Americans and all their horses are almost old enough to vote. Is this the best American product Petone can come up with? Then they cut the ten race card down to six and then recently three. Today one of those three is a no TV race. Honestly,why bother? There are 12 races at Yonkers New York today and 12 at Northfield Park Ohio. I've recently started betting on these harness races with an off shore betting agency. All our TAB does is wet your appetite for American harness and then chop you off at the knees. If they want to understand why punters are going elsewhere just look at the way they have bungled the broadcasting and betting of American racing. Interesting to note that tab.com in oz has betting on all of the 24 harness races quoted. How can they offer that "service" yet our tab can't?

If there are three or four of us on here that look like All Star cheerleaders then there are three or four more that look like those fox terrier's barking and humping away at your leg. All that's left when you leave the scene is a heap of saliva on your leg...well at least I hope it's saliva

You are so right Canelo. Losing your child is as bad as it gets. I have a good mate who lost his beautiful daughter four years ago when she was 20. She was so vibrant and the life of every party loved by everyone. So hard just to carry on each day putting one foot in front of the other. If there is a God,what was he thinking?

I don't want to split hairs with you but would you confirm that in your opinion a low UDR = incompetence. Would you classify any of the drivers below with low UDR's as incompetent? Brian Zampese John Versteeg Kerry O'Reilly ( won the 1984 Dominion Handicap with Basil Dean but has a poor UDR ) Michelle Wallis Murray Rennie Kerry Hadfield John Hay Roddy Curtin Derek Balle Andrew Neal ( won the Auckland Cup on Flight South in 2000 but has a poor UDR ) I think a fair percentage of drivers with low UDR's are trainers who concentrate on that side of the game and have other drivers steer their good horses. When they do drive it's often on a difficult or lesser horse very long on the tote.

Since when have UDR's been evidence of incompetence Brodie? I've got no issue with older hobby drivers closing in on retirement who only win one race a year. Some of them have forgotten more than most of us will ever know. The only time they become an issue is if they are acting as a wall for runners behind wanting to get past. Why are you worried about them? On the way home her car is T Boned by a driver impaired by alcohol. Tragically your wife is killed. Her life is taken away and your life is forever changed along with that of all her loved ones. Would you still be saying breath testing kits are rubbish? Random breath testing is yet another incentive for the meatheads out there not to drive after consuming alcohol. You talk about an over regulated society. Really? How has self regulating been working? If it works so well why are our cemeteries full of the victims of alcohol impaired drivers? I can understand people being passionate about this issue. I frankly don't understand why anyone would be passionate against it.

I despise the very unhelpful term "drunk driving". It's a blanket phrase that does way more harm than good. How many drunk people actually admit they are drunk? Very few. All you need to do is examine the typical answer from a pulled over impaired driver. He's been tail gating and overtaking dangerously etc etc. "Have you been drinking sir?" ...yes,I've had two cans. What that means of course is I had two cans about three hours ago..and I've had about ten more since. Then you have all the confusion about men being able to drink more than woman before exceeding the limit and bigger people being able to consume more than smaller people etc. It's all a confusing unhelpful mess on what is a critical issue. You even have a few lunatics out there that sincerely believe they actually drive better after a couple of beers. You hear news reports of "drunk drivers" causing mayhem. Most drivers who routinely drive impaired will ignore that as they don't see themselves as a "drunk driver". If drunk drivers don't think they are drunk drivers then what hope have we got? We need to change the terminology on alcohol impaired drivers and educate the people who still don't get it. if you drive under the influence of alcohol you are a DIBA..= Driver impaired by alcohol or DIBD = Driver impaired by drugs. Then we need to educate the masses with no input or influence from the giant companies out there making billions from alcohol sales. Show just how much alcohol it takes before your reactions etc are affected. It's a very small amount. You don't need to be "drunk" in the way most people refer to a drunk person. If you've had one glass of beer you should not be driving on our roads with other innocent kiwis,not operating machinery,not riding or driving a horse in a race. I believe we should adopt a zero alcohol limit. Remove all the confusion on this issue and the total hypocrisy in a P.C world that we allow anyone to drink any amount of alcohol and then be given the green light to drive on our roads. It's one thing for an alcohol impaired driver not to value his own life etc but another altogether to have him using the same roads everyone else who values their life is also using. You can't be a little bit pregnant. You either are or you aren't.
