I’ve had a few over the years with feet problems, can’t pick them up fast enough.

Why not there Gruffalo, good horses can be bred bred from any mare regardless of,  some of the best bred broodmares can often leave nothing, not sure if the wind issue would be hereditary, apart from that can see why she wouldn’t be successful, had a few wind issues myself, but hasn’t stopped me breeding, wether  I’ve been a success is debatable.

A old friend of mine, a superb horseman,  excellent trainer and stockman, reckoned a nice kind bullet was the most humane end a horse could have.  When the good life is finished, he said, they're finished.  None of these horses will ever know an unkind word or a hungry day.
I was taken aback at the time, but after much thought - and a helluva lot more experience - reckon he wasn't wrong.

The only reason this whole thing is being debated is because TA don't want to be shown up if someone else gets hold of a horse they sell and it performs .
It's all about TA's ego .

Classic, certainly was speedy horse that liked the coast, John Rehu owned from memory, would have won 9 or so races, your story reminds me of a similar situation of a well backed runner that hadn’t gone well at all, when questioned the rider replied, no use both of us getting tired. Remember the good horse Conan for Eddie Low, he was a nice horse, was by the battler stallion State of Kings from memory, trained by Eddie Low, who rode Star Order who won a Nz Cup, did see a horse win the other month in the same colours, eliana, looked liked young Eddie owns.

An amusing wee anecdote concerning that little sprinter Strange Magic....he won his maiden at Westport, by a margin.
We allowed him time to recover from the trip snd he then ran at Riccarton,  very much favoured in the betting.  He never raised a gallop and rider/trainer Mouse McCann was hauled into the room for not running the horse on his merits.  Finally, in exasperation, Mouse said to then stipe,  Bruce Craik, do you think I'm stupid?  Would I make it so bloody obvious if we weren't trying?  When I pull a horse up you lot will never know.

Yes , it only really went on in the last 20 mins , I took the 4.8 as soon as it opened .

I trained Mr McGerkle in the latter stage of his career, lovely horse.
Funnily enough,  Lord Gesmo was one of the few by Cocky Golfer who didn't like a wet track.
He was a very nice horse too, I thought he could have won a NZ Cup, but a lead up race I had counted on was missed when Motukarara was abandoned. 

Bank’s Peninsula that brings back a few memories, real shame they don’t race the thoroughbreds their anymore, have always wondered the reason they don’t, was there the day the mighty Loader won, only the way he could, coming from what seem an impossible position at the back of the field, used to love the smaller rural tracks back in those day when I resided in Canterbury, all very handy, Rangiora Banks p Ashburton, even venturing to Oamaru and Waimate, they had jumps at Waimate back then, never got to Kurow, did push the boat out a couple times venture to Wingatui an Omakau.

At this time of year, I'm looking closely at horses with poor form (and ignore it!), no weight (helpful) perhaps lightly tried by wet-track sires or with pedigree that includes wet-trackers ...and especially apprentice claims 3k or 4kg. A young hoop like Tom Wigram claiming 4kg already riding winners, looks capable and will soon outride that claim.

I don't get why owners should be unfairly shafted from a race day abandonments. But I'm a bit ignorant of matters.
Are not trainers reimbursed for nom/acceptance fees/ transport costs but any original costs still end up on owners invoices? Surely not.
Or is it the loss of opportunity? Can't win if there's no race. And another 2, 3 or 4 weeks to wait, all costs time and money and just adds to the invoice with no returns. Fair call. I wouldn't want to be an owner in these circumstances.
Raceday abandonments appear to be happening all too frequently in NZ, for one reason or another. But when workplace safety is the issue that's all that matters. I don't think NZ racing can ignore that any longer. No workplace can. The racing industry cannot disassociate itself from a basic workers right, to be safe at work and return home in one piece. Collectively the industry has an obligation. Now under ever more scrutinized legislation. 
 But if it is true that owners are being penalised over and above other stakeholders, well, yes there should be some way of redress.
