I am not sticking up for them, simply explaining what I think that they mean by "a full renovation of the Hastings turf"
Yes it is normal practice or at least was when I was involved with a Racing Club who did a full renovation like that, at least twice a year.
Having said that the club that I was involved with had 4 or 5 guys to look after the gardens, grounds and track back then.
Now I think that they are down to one, maybe two. Every club is in the same position except maybe Ellerslie.
The new "business orientated CEO's" have come in over the last 20 to 25 years, taken no notice of the old codgers on the various committees and said, "this is the way we are doing it now, as we simply don't have any money". [Truth]
    Go figure.

Shouldn’t they just be doing this stuff normally. Part of your maintenance cycle. Why wait till meetings are abandoned.
The geezer who suggested shutting all those other courses down, which could have stepped in to take a load off, is most culpable in my eyes. Hope they didn’t pay him.

Interestingly, there is a 3yo fillies race over exactly the same distance on Saturday. Some of the northern trainers will be regretting not taking the option closer at hand.

Geez , along with Waipuk , there's a lot of cups run at Hastings .
As you say Pam adding all those meetings to the ones they ran themselves are we surprised that the track can't handle it .

Ellerslie has issues as do 95% of all other tracks in the country...most are stuffed.....and some decent ones are not allowed to even hold a meeting...blind leading the blind.

So we have Otaki who irrigated up until the day before the races and, Hastings who stopped watering after Friday night , is one right and the other wrong ? or both right ? , or both wrong ?.
Whatever the answer both tracks not up to running group races on , IMO .
How many of those at last nights soiree at Karaka honestly think everything is great in the kingdom , or does the amount of money being poured into stakes override all other considerations .
On stakes , Derby day on Saturday and not one full field , for all the big stakes on offer they can't get full fields .

It hasn't rained here in Otaki for 3 weeks. 1mm last night, Thats not rain. How much irrigation did they put on? Desert Lightning wanted to scratch cause too wet. Horses coming out to middle of track. Ridiculous. Rain wasn't forecast till Saturday night. If they couldn't get a good track today, they never will. How many million litres of water went on the track. Don't tell Wellington, just down the road. They are on water restrictions. We should be racing on Good 3 this time of year like Melbourne every week

But it was those revised times that Ellerslie could not keep up with. Completely different issue to the TAB enforced delay.

Very poor attitude towards Invercargill on Trackside today I thought. Ellerslie running late all day, apart from the TAB cockup, and ran over the top of Invercargill every race. The worst one was the last at Ellerslie running 8 minutes late. Both fields were loaded and ready to jump at the same time so they took Ellerslie live and recorded Invercargill, despite the southern club running on time. Surely the late race should wait in the queue? And its not as if the Ellerslie race was more important, both the same class and virtually identical stakes.
It was hardly as if the massive crowd at Ellerslie overwhelmed them on course.

On Tuesday the European Pattern Committee (EPC) announced that 42 races are at risk of being downgraded in 2025, including Britain's G1 Commonwealth Cup.

I actually think this is a fascinating and crucial race-day in Auckland. After all the hype and the big crowd on Karaka day it will be interesting to see how many back up on Saturday. They have had about three weeks to get over the excitement of Karaka day so you think many would be keen to go again. The fields are probably better betting fields, there are more races and some of the major horses from Karaka day are backing up as well. The weather should be better and there is less competition on in Auckland. I imagine the entry charge is probably lower as well.
So given all these factors, I'm sure the club is hoping for a big crowd. Probably more Avondale residents in attendance this time as well.

I think at $175,000 it is probably likely to attract the best going around who are after that type of race. I doubt that $250,000 or $275,000 would attract any better horses.
I do believe there is a bit of an art in setting race stakes. It needs to be a stake worthy of the status of the race, but without going silly and throwing away money without attracting any better quality or quantity.
