  1. Interestingly, there is a 3yo fillies race over exactly the same distance on Saturday. Some of the northern trainers will be regretting not taking the option closer at hand.
  2. Compare it to the Sydney track today after torrential rain last night.
  3. And they were so proud it was going to Hong Kong. What an embarrassment.
  4. I did think it strange that Ellerslie couldn't keep up and absolutely no explanation that I heard why they managed to be 8 minutes late. I suppose it will be in the stipes report eventually.
  5. Very poor attitude towards Invercargill on Trackside today I thought. Ellerslie running late all day, apart from the TAB cockup, and ran over the top of Invercargill every race. The worst one was the last at Ellerslie running 8 minutes late. Both fields were loaded and ready to jump at the same time so they took Ellerslie live and recorded Invercargill, despite the southern club running on time. Surely the late race should wait in the queue? And its not as if the Ellerslie race was more important, both the same class and virtually identical stakes. It was hardly as if the massive crowd at Ellerslie overwhelmed them on course.
  6. All good, "it has been escalated to the highest level"
  7. I imagine he was ill from the sound of things. I have no idea how bad that was. Harness racing does seem to have gone backwards relative to Galloping. $10,000 -$11,000 races at major country tracks near ChCh with big oncourse crowds is a bit sad to see. And tighter class races with tiny fields isn't a good look.
  8. I actually think this is a fascinating and crucial race-day in Auckland. After all the hype and the big crowd on Karaka day it will be interesting to see how many back up on Saturday. They have had about three weeks to get over the excitement of Karaka day so you think many would be keen to go again. The fields are probably better betting fields, there are more races and some of the major horses from Karaka day are backing up as well. The weather should be better and there is less competition on in Auckland. I imagine the entry charge is probably lower as well. So given all these factors, I'm sure the club is hoping for a big crowd. Probably more Avondale residents in attendance this time as well.
  9. I think at $175,000 it is probably likely to attract the best going around who are after that type of race. I doubt that $250,000 or $275,000 would attract any better horses. I do believe there is a bit of an art in setting race stakes. It needs to be a stake worthy of the status of the race, but without going silly and throwing away money without attracting any better quality or quantity.
  10. I have a vague idea the Avondale Cup was $300,000 many years ago. Of course things haven't gone well for Avondale since then so perhaps they over stretched themselves.
  11. Many seem to forget that the original intention of punters clubs was to boost oncourse turnover., and the clubs got a financial benefit from the extra commission. The ideal punters club would start with a pool of say $10,000, invest $10,000 or more on each race and return the original stake to all the investors. Obviously a profit would be nice, but not essential. Changing to large fixed odds bets probably distorts this concept a bit. I have no idea what the commission is on fixed odds bets as potentially the TAB could lose money if the bets go well.
  12. You actually said why don't Trentham want them there, which implies they were keen to go but turned away. That is different to BGP not being interested in having a go at Trentham.
  13. Fairly obvious I would have thought. No way could Trentham cope with an extra thousand or so people at one of their meetings given the size of crowds they already attract.
  14. Even I have had weekend's when I lose half my stake. Even the TAB takes pity on me occasionally and offers me a bonus bet to top up my account.
  15. Looks like it. He must have some AWT horses.
  16. I noticed that at the time as well. I presume he is going to have a SI based 2yo. Seems strange when the SI doesn't have 2yo racing.
  17. Good to see trainers support them with good sized fields too. Always frustrating to see massive crowds at tauherenikau and terrible fields.
  18. I can remember Moonee Valley being called off during a meeting only a year or so ago.
  19. A bit sad to see Holden describe it as a win for Dunedin and a win for his sport. In other words the Dunedin council gets some land to do with as it wishes and HRNZ gets $13m to pour into Alex Park and Addington. I suppose we might get a "Thank you Forbury" race in Auckland and ChCh for a couple of years.
  20. How can an area be unable to be irrigated? Surely they could pop down to Bunnings and buy a length of hose and a couple of sprinklers?
  21. True. I'm just waiting for one to pop up in my price range.
  22. Only one raceday over a five day period from this Thurs to next Monday. Only two racedays from 28th Jan to 5 Feb, a spell of nine days with two race days. Mid summer. Quite bizarre really. 14 days without a meeting in Canty. Surely not all Canty trainers are at Karaka? Don't appear to be based on results so far anyhow. You would have thought they could have fitted in a low key meeting at Timaru or Ashburton this coming Thurs or Friday.
  23. All the big punters in Auck are burnt out for another 12 months.
  24. Sounds like punting might not really be the game for you. Have you tried lotto?
