  1. Hi Berri - the base weights for the Auckland Cup is 55kg for males and 53kg for females with penalties from there. Sound, being a male, carries the base weight of 55kg and no penalty because he has not won a stakes race for 18 months. Etah James, being female, carries the base weight of 53kg plus a 1/2kg penalty for winning a listed race. Dee and Gee, being a female, carries the base weight of 53kg plus a 1kg penalty for winning a Group 3 race and Soleseifei the same
  2. Yes, We're Doomed - it was in the 4-mile Novices Steeplechase at the Cheltenham Festival for amateur riders. They were banned but got off on appeal. After what happened in that race, The Jockey Club (overseas Cheltenham), made a number of changes to the conditions of that race including shortening the distance. Globally, the biggest issue facing racing is animal welfare - or specifically, the perception of parts of it.
  3. Blue - the guiding principle for paying stake money to horses that were pulled up is animal welfare. We don't want to get to a point where jockeys are jumping the last couple of fences, with extremely tired horses, with the aim of earning said prize money. In the best interests of the sport, well-beaten jumpers are best pulled up and the prize money distributed.
  4. Join jumps jockey legends Michelle Strawbridge (nee Hopkins) and Wayne Hillis on a stroll around the famous Ellerslie steeplechase course on the morning of Great Northern Day. Michelle and Wayne will provide great insight into what it takes to win the great race. Both were involved in the famous Great Northern Steeplechase dead-heat of 2001. Morning tea available from 9am with the walk to start at 9.30am Please email craigb@ellerslie.co.nz if you are interested in attending.
