Los Lobos reacted to Mattski in Messara Racing Review Full Report and 17 Key points
Most of the recommendations seem to make sense to me. i.e. I grew up in and love the Naki but it doesn't make sense to have tracks in NP, Stratford, Hawera and Waverley. Have 2 properly maintained tracks.
Maybe we should get behind Winston - he is the only racing minister in my life time that has actually tried to do something positive.

As for Te Akau, don’t apprentices go to the next level when they leave there! Look at Jasmine Fawcett. Struggled to get rides whilst there and look at her now. Te Akau should stick at what they know best, training horses, not mentoring apprentices.

So Ellerslie is going ahead with a 1/2 arsed drainage job instead of installing a Strathayr track like Moonee Valley?
Surely they should be told to wait for the Messara report before doing anything? Whatever they do now is likely to be a waste of time and money.
The hardest thing for the industry to swallow will be if he recommends significant racetrack centralisation. If he does do that then it’s essential for Ellerslie to be Strathayr or similar.

Of course the real concern if a Party like NZ First are successful is what they do with any financial assistance given to the industry.
Surely don't want a situation like last time where the money was fretted away on top end stakes and had very little beneficial impact to the industry.
Infrastructure and base are where any funds should be applied and a long term approach taken, the industry is so broken therer are no quick fixes!

What a breath of fresh air! Passion, did his homework, and while not accurate on some concerns, he's doing a wonderful job bringing this serious issue to the fore. At least there's talk, under Guy, nada, zilch, he was dragged kicking and screaming to the table, thank God he's history.......Winnie and NZ First maybe the only people that can institute change.

Good to hear someone speaking up for racing in Parliament, and also at the same time chastising the NZRB for their lack of effort. NZ First gets my vote.

As much as Ted ( and others ) don't like it the good judges who've had a bit of experience have had Te Aroha labelled as a basket case for some time, and as usual they're right.
    Lets be frank.
It's got a negative camber across the top and turn, that gives it a ludicrous front runners bias, the soil is fucked, the facilities are about country club level ( that's picnic racing ) and the club is run by a bunch of amateurs who are simply out of their depth ( you excluded Ted ).
Learn your lesson from Counties Te Aroha, understand your problems, recognise your weaknesses, then either spend the money to make your facility current and relevant, or relocate to another club that meets modern standards, eg Te Rapa.

I reckon CJ deserves this one. Huge effort to do this when SI based and he has overcome so many setbacks (some self inflicted for sure).

Closer to home I would also recommend Highden Park - Libby Bleakley, 89 Highden Park Road, RD 6 Palmerston North Phone 027 612 9610.
Question [and I am not trying to be rude]! Is your filly well enough bred and correct enough to warrant a sales preparation? If not it will only end in tears irrespective of who prepares her.
Talk to some some sales preparation people [of which there are plenty of good ones], listen to what they say and then act.
Good luck with your endeavours in this current environment.

I can't work out and I have brought it up numerous times, why are we so set on the rating bands?
What would be wrong with a rating 60, 70, and 80 race. Why are we so set on 65, 75 and 85?

The bizarre thing is there are actually more horses eliminated from some fields these days than actually start in other races at the same meeting. It just doesn't seem logical, right or sensible these days.

They should have run an extra Maiden 1600m. Feel sorry for the connections that have missed a run.

Yes waiting to see if your horse got in is painful enough especially when there are over 30 nominations for one race, but then finding they have split a different race and your horse once again misses out is criminal. When other courses are having poor nominations wouldn't you think they would run a popular meeting with maximum numbers of races to clear the backlog. Makes it difficult for owners to keep the faith month after month and difficult for trainers to convince the owners to stick with it.

Look at it from the club point of view as well.  The racebook costs, the catering the staff costs the advertising(if any) the St John and the raceday services, the TAB costs - all are the same or virtually the same  whether eight races or twelve but those chappies at NZTR say 'no you can only have eight or whatever'
It is not just the owners and Trainers that find it frustrating I can assure you

Could it not work where on midweek/Sunday(all low grade days)  that the is just a more simple system of open entry races with the set distances for the day and then fields are grouped according to ratings once nominations close.  This way nothing will miss out getting a run, might need to have to have a bit more spread in the weights though.
With the exception being Maiden races.

Los Lobos reacted to We're Doomed in Surely not that stupid
Well, never assume anything in this industry. They didn't split the rating 65 1,600m, so 14 horses are balloted and eliminated. No option to race out of their class to get a start as there is no other 1,600m race other than the maiden. Does this sort of thing annoy owners and trainers at all or do they just take it in their stride?
I am always a bit bemused by people discussing all weather tracks and the like on here when the industry can't even get the most simpliest of basics right.

If it is zoned residential and it gets sold why not just invest in Matamata its the centre of the industry... why build a whole new complex...it seems to make little sense either.

It's amazing what a lot of noise can do.  So well done to Pike and other leading industry representatives.  Also well done to a lot of noise makers on the racecafe site.  Make no mistake about this site is read consistently by NZracing.
The Jan crisis meeting before magic millions main objective was to stop the tab and Paddy Power FO betting platform until all other avenues were investigated.  Particularly the one where VICTAB was going to give NZracing money to work with them as opposed to the Paddy Power deal.  However it appears that this was not able to be done as we were too far down the Paddy Power road.
As I have said before this is very good news, but it has to be the start of the journey not the end.  We must ensure we are not eating into reserves.
    So let's keep moving forward:
Get this new FO betting platform up and running asap.  Reduce future leakage and try and get a few customers back.  I will come back :-) Make hard decisions about the future of some racing clubs.  We can't keep having abandoned meetings if we are trying to beam our product to the world. Find a surface that we can race on weekly Costs to be managed at head office Get our rating system sorted I look forward to my horse being in work now :-)

I'd like to thank Tony Pike and the TA for finally flexing their muscles ( whilst combining with NZTR ) and reminding Hughes and John Allen who this industry actually belongs to & who they're ultimately accountable to, and in the process sending a decent shock wave through the NZRB offices.
Now you've seen what you can achieve Pikey I urge you to use the same tactics to remedy the various other racing matters that require urgent attention.
Might I suggest you start by getting on the phone and suggesting we get a top class NZ CE at NZTR, someone who has credibility and skin in the game, someone who can unite the industry rather than the recycled Australian said to already have been told he's got the job, and who's rumoured to be an inside appointment by "Played and Missed" Jackson.
