MiDeBo Racing reacted to Disillusioned in Industry Meeting @ Karaka Millions - Same Old Same Old
    Something doesn’t quite ‘fit’, ha…

A week or so back, Midget proclaimed:
The plug is about to be pulled at the swamp
The big 5 clubs, plus the Trainers Assn, Jockeys Assn & breeders.
Big Glenda and "slippery" John Allen have been invited, and they will be required to answer a small number of previously submitted critical questions ( they'll be defiant as they always are ) then they'll be advised of the options being considered by the industry.
Exciting times ahead, on many fronts, it might be a good time to buy a yearling because the "stinking swamp is about to be drained"
Wish I could tell you more, do watch this space.

Today, Midget, asked what was actually achieved at the meeting, says:
I haven't bothered to ask anyone, and I'm sure that if they wanted me ( and Cafe ) to know they'd have called me by now.
I did go racing last night but it's hard to chat to birds, drink champagne, back losers, and worry about racing politics all at the same time. If you're wondering politics ranks #4 in that list.
Anyway, having read the communique, I can only say it's a carefully worded and heavily sanitised statement about absolutely nothing useful......and NZ racing will thus get exactly what it deserves.

So Midget was talking through his rear-end about swamp-draining?
More ‘much loud talk, but precious little action’?
In other words, same old, same old from the industry?

    Prediction:
A report will come out wherein all parties (well, all the parties who were invited) pledge to:
    Work together
Set super-vague performance targets for 2021/22
    and
Set up a committee to decide on which colour sand they should all stick their heads into for the next five years…

Thanks to many of you for your lovely comments, and to those of you that have PM' me. It was written with the passion I have for the industry in whole, be it here or in Australia where I spent 43 years, in corporate life and in racing, sometimes both.
Most of you will be unaware, however a few weeks ago I took my first runner to the races here in New Zealand, it ran last, and only last week I took my second, being the same horse, for the same result.......downhearted? disappointed? both and more, but only because I would have liked to replicate how I started my training career across the ditch, my first runner in Victoria won at Cranbourne, my first runner in South Australia won at Cheltenham running an unbroken track record and my first runner in NSW ran 2nd and then won by 7 lengths giving Dwayne Dunn his first winner in NSW, so, what a contrast for me here in NZ! Brings one back down to earth somewhat.....
The positive to that, I remain committed to grass roots racing and the people that matter most here, grass roots!........even though my corporate life is demanding, I want to commit to our industry and grow our team to the size we planned when we first mooted our move to New Zealand back in 2012 after deliberating Mr Purcell's promised land prophecies. Our global investors have always been friends away from business, and although they have withdrawn their financial commitment of importing Gr placed Argentinean fillies/mares and colts to race and breed here [for the moment] I would like to think I can re-invigorate them in the future should we be able to turn the industry around.
I don't mind wearing my heart on my sleeve, age is meant to bring wisdom, am I more wiser? you betcha booties I am, as I said previously, I wont believe another statement/press release from Petone until my confidence and trust is restored, millions of dollars out of pocket, but as yet not totally out of love.....thank you all once again.

Let's pretend for a moment shall we? Let's pretend we all live in a place, let's call it ''Peoples Republic Of The North and South Islands''.....now, with all this opportunity to unite the downtrodden and forgotten at an impending important race meeting that was going to receive national media coverage, a group of industry people gathered behind a crowded grandstand, [the only time for the year more than a handful sat in the seats] and set about with their plans to show the nation that they were more than upset.
With the backing of owners who had runners engaged in the most important race that day, and the jockeys, and with a few 'in the know officials' they planned to canter to the barriers for said race and then as the starter called them into line, whoa, yeah nah, we're all off back to the mounting yard, where the trainers and owners had just unfurled a huge banner voicing their discontent and were calling for action from the Racing Minister [who was ensconced within the luxury of the committee rooms] re the senior management and the disaster that had befallen the racing industry.
All hell broke lose, the stewards were powerless in the face of such numbers, and in fact many of the stewards were in the corner of the disenfranchised, and although the television coverage was directed to cease and go to commercials, a few radical employees denied their bosses and let the feed run......social media was in meltdown and iphone's became instant webcams.
The global response was astounding, the feedback coming through was overwhelmingly in favour of the militants, and after a delay of some 2 hours and many meetings behind closed doors, the Trainers spokesman came to address the waiting media......''Gentlemen'' we are pleased to announce the meeting will proceed as planned, there will be a special meeting of industry luminaries in two days time to discuss the future of racing in the Republic and the Prime Minister will attend in person, the Racing Minister will not, as he is leaving his portfolio the Prime Minister will take this portfolio in caretaker mode until further notice. The spokesman continued in a controlled manner, ''In addition, we have received news that there will be two resignations to follow shortly, we are not at liberty to disclose to you who these people are, at this moment anyway, all we can say is, we have been well received, in fact the civility is humbling considering the militant action we deemed necessary''. ''In closing, we do not regret this action, we regret we had to take this course, however it has achieved the required result, with luck, we know of at least ten families and countless former workers and wage earners within this marvellous industry of ours who will return to the fold, and that in itself is extremely gratifying. 'As further news comes to hand, no doubt you will all be informed, on behalf of all owners, trainers and jockeys we thank you for your understanding''.
During the following years racing prospered and grew in the Republic, bookmakers were licensed, thousands of new jobs created, and most importantly, the Government received billions of dollars in taxation revenue, The North and South Island became the talk of the racing world, and the people were united, representatives from the racing board were very respected and such was the state of the industry Hong Kong sent their own people to the Republic to learn the pathway forward......
The most auspicious date in the racing calendar became the 29th January 2017, the day the racing industry in the republic was reborn.

Midget, you are suffering "premature evaluation" re Trump. He is quickly delivering and also exhibiting surprising moderation and restraint. As for Kylie supporting Trump, that is her right, but as for things equine she has never suffered "racing deprivation" in her cosseted world and IMO her comments are those of a vacuous bimbo who gets far too much credence because of her looks and her connections.

I'm in syndicates with a taranaki trainer. Communication is excellent and you can drop out of a syndicate any time. Going with a lesser known trainer was a deliberate decision to be able to have some more input. The larger operations may have more chance of success with any given horse but Id rather be able to speak to the trainer and not feel like I should be quiet and just read the newsletter.
Advice to a newcomer would be don't worry about breeding or sale rights for now just get into a local racing syndicate where you can go help out around the stable if you want, help choose the name and have some fun at the races.

FFS honestly if they just ran their fixed odds department properly they would make at least another $20 million pa, No need to spend $90m, And Race Fields legislation ain't gonna produce $1. If any bookmaker is forced to pay for the right to offer NZ racing (no idea how they could do that either) they will just dump it, because as we all know it is an awful product at the moment and doesn't attract enough turnover to justify books paying for it. It's just a ridiculous concept, if the EPL and the NFL can't get any of the world's 1000+ bookmakers to pay for the rights to bet on their leagues, what chance does the NZRB have? WOFTAM

This is why the Board recently commissioned an independent review (by KPMG) of the NZRB’s ability to deliver those projects. Their report was presented back to the Board in December, and I am pleased to advise that it was positive"
Thanks Glenda. Any chance you could release the KPMG report so the rest of us stakeholders can glean the same sense of confidence that you seem to have taken from it?

I were personally  going to go to a syndicator a few years back and looked at the options and to be honest once waying it all up cost, communication and say in the horse I looked at it as alot of associated costs for a lessor return. I am not knocking them as they have a place in the industry.
What i did do was spoke to some  trainers and discussed options I settled on Graham Richardson zero mark up on horses and zero syndication fees so what you get is training fee, Vet account , Pre training account and Transport account with no mark up .As for communication we get weekly updates with in more cases than not video of the horses and he is always able to talk and discuss about the horses .
Now that might not be everyones cup of tea but it works for me

I've had one horse with a major syndicator.
Communication was good, good website, few perks etc. They did many things well.
I will agree the monthly invoices often were eye popping and I suspected that there were little margins on everything built in, and little areas (yeah covers being one, charges for use of racing colours etc etc) which I thought were OTT.
My major objection was the total lack of input into decision making - the only decision i was ever asked to agree to was sending the horse overseas. And even that was presented in the only phone call I ever got from the manager as "everyone else has agreed to do this etc etc etc..."
The decision to quit the horse and sell when he didn't acclimatise was poorly communicated and effectively had no input.
So for me - never again.
I struck up a relationship with a local trainer who gave me the option to get into a few horses which are raced with a group of his other local owners. We've had some success, very social and really enjoyed it.

PS - in the interest of fairness I know people 3 or 4 people involved in syndications which have worked really well on many fronts... so there is a place for it.

I think the exact opposite Chevy when I look at all the irrigated tracks around the country falling to bits! The racing yesterday I thought was outstanding . Yes it would have been great not to have had the heavy rain that we did but The horses yesterday came from everywhere in front midfield and several winners and place getters were in last 2 600 out. They raced on the rail most of the day. With getting probably 3 inches of rain over the last few days I believe the times were a good indication of the quality of the track. I have seen a lot of tracks soon as it rains they head for they outside running rail immediately? One day last year I watched The first race at Awapuni Start at the 1400mtr and some horses immediately went to the outside fence 50 metres after the start.  I think I seen the Oaks winner yesterday as well. It was a major training centre but there is a lot of reasons for the shift of training  numbers to other centres  not many to do with the quality of the track. I can't remember Mr Eric Ropiha or Mr Syd Brown or Mr Jock Harris etc  demanding that their horses will only run on a dead4 They just got on with the job as horseman and trained their horses accordingly.  Woodville has great training tracks we don't have a thousand horses slogging around and around everyday with little or no grasses to gallop on.I certainly would put my horses welfare first when it comes to selecting a training centre . Woodville has a very dedicated committee that puts in thousands of hours of FREE Labour  a year to keep racing going . Most of our races are sponsored which brings many new people into racing that may continue attending races or even race horses   all through the work of our  hard working committee  with very little gratitude from any level of racing . They have been very proactive to promote our club with New ideas to attract people to come to the races  and enjoy themselves Woodville ran the Rural Expo day every year successfully also ran The Great Kiwi Sausage Festival which made us part of the Interisland Chistmas Racing . But they took that Sat off us and give it to a bigger club which appears to have proven to be a dead Duck!    Now we are looking at next years calendar draft and they are taking another day off us and giving extra to clubs whose tracks haven't handled racing now?? go figure?? You would wonder if somebody at the top just doesn't like Woodville or have no interest in giving the Owners Horse a fair chance to stretch out properly and race to it's potential.

MiDeBo Racing reacted to Dopey in Ferlax lost
From an email announcement this morning...
It is with great regret that Haunui Farm announces the loss of Group One Australian Guineas winner Ferlax this weekend after sustaining a paddock injury on Thursday afternoon.  On the eve of transporting his first crop of yearlings to Karaka 2017, it’s certainly a bitter pill to swallow.

“We are quite devastated,” said Haunui Farm’s Managing Director, Mark Chitty.  “We were privileged to have had the opportunity to stand Ferlax on behalf of his owner, Jonathan Munz, and have worked closely with him and his Bloodstock Manager Dean Hawthorne to give Ferlax the best possible opportunity at stud.  For something like this to happen before he’s even had a yearling go through the ring, let alone a runner on the track, is pretty tough.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved with giving their advice in regard to the injury Ferlax sustained.  We certainly explored all of the options and there are vets all around the world who have been providing their thoughts and opinions over the past few days which we very much appreciate.  In the end, the difficult decision was taken to euthanize Ferlax yesterday morning.

“I’d like to personally thank Jonathan and Dean for giving Haunui the opportunity to stand Ferlax and there’s no doubt in my mind that from the quality of the two crops we have on the ground and the one left to come, we will see some very good racehorses in the years ahead.  Jonathan put his full support behind the New Zealand industry by choosing to stand Ferlax here and to lose him at this early stage is certainly a blow not only to Haunui, but to our entire breeding industry as we can ill afford to lose promising young stallions like this.”

Ferlax has been laid to rest overseeing the Haunui Farm parade ring.

I don’t want to be negative after a great days racing at Wellington but the TAB have just about lost me altogether

I can deposit as much as I like into two off sure betting agencies, and I can withdraw funds back in the same account and have it available within 3 working days

Issues I have in NZ, trying to withdraw, looking for an agency in Christchurch, after they have shut a few, spend 30minutes drive to withdraw and they don’t have enough funds. Drive to another, “how much you need from your account sir, we have paid out a lot today”

"We can give you a cheque", then I have to go to a bank in a mall and spend another hour sorting this out, then waiting 5 working days for it to clear
