Southland got a reaction from Breeder in VRC Oaks - Sir T influence
Just an observation... The influence of Sir Tristram blood on yesterday's VRC Oaks was significant. Not only does his son Zabeel sit on both sides of the winner's (Pinot) pedigree but no fewer that half the field had an element of Sir Tristram / Sir Ivor influence on their dam side, either through sire sons (Zabeel, Grosvenor or Sovereign Red) or a S/T mare. In fact his bloodlines can be found in the Oaks trifecta (which paid a tidy $1000).
Pinot's pedigree is very tidy. Given Pierro has a Sadlers Wells influence on his dam side, perhaps no surprise he sired such a promising staying mare.
    Thoughts??

Dear Scooby, don’t know if you have attended the Championships, but it is NO failure.

Dundeel sealed it the first time, but it has improved.
I have been since it’s inception, it is great racing. Should be applauded that Messara processed the Carnival into a spectacle that it is. Track unfortunate this year, but you will be hard pressed to see another scintillating performance by the grey streak that was the TJ Smith. Winx a no brainer. Bonneval was outstanding, John Snow tough, Gingernuts tired, horse quality terrific. A perfect racing entry to Autumn and the sales. I suggest you go one day.
No knocking Spring in Melbourne, a wonderful Carnival. It is cemented into racing benchmarks and yardsticks. That won’t change in a hurry.
But the Championships are indeed worthy by a furlong.

The Everest is a solo performance, somewhat isolated. But the grey will just beat English and Vegas in a photo................
Go to Sydney in April Scoobie, you won’t be disappointed.

She is actually asking us to vote for the 5 or so tax advisors that are going to re-shape NZ in the short to medium term. That she can't tell us who they are, and what those taxes might be is a recipe for disaster. Not a difficult notion to ponder. Almost similar to us not knowing how much sport betting is going to take from the racing industry under the new Act.

Surely not a stretch to do the same for betting. Race five freebie (free drink or bet up to $xx) and perhaps some sort of personal turnover credits. No doubt done in off shore jurisdictions.

As the CEO of Ellerslie in this day and age he can be liable for what happens at a venue that he is ultimately responsible for.  You can be the judge or your own risk areas at your own property.  I am just trying to point out the world we live in.

    NZTR states its position....

No decision has been made on the composition of the programme for the 2018 Karaka Million meeting at Ellerslie in January.
NZTR wishes to clarify the situation following a release from New Zealand Bloodstock today, which stated that four Group races would be staged at the Karaka Million meeting.
While NZTR has supported moves to run the Karaka Million meeting on a Saturday and to provide an enhanced racing programme, including Group racing, the details of the programme have not been finalised.
Over the next three weeks, NZTR will be consulting with all race clubs impacted by the proposed changes.
A recommendation will be considered at the NZTR Board meeting on May 11, prior to consideration by the New Zealand Pattern Committee.

On his Chairmans run (on a similar track) i'd say he'd probably need to find a a couple of lengths to give it a shake. If he missses a start he's on the float to Melbourne (see Tuesdays fields).

This letter is pure bully tactics (do they think they are the mafia) and not in the best interest of nzracing.  They wasted $50K suing Morton and now this.
NZ racing needs to compete not worry about others.  This website is also no a co.nz address, so they have no jurisdiction over this.
NZ racing wants overseas people to use the nz TAB but not let it go the other way.  This is crazy.
Also people make like this alternative website, and therefore be following nzracing more and punting more.  This letter is beggars belief.
    GET WITH THE TIMES NZRACING.
If I deposit $100 in my bet365 account, I get best odds guaranteed.  If I somehow manage to win, I hit withdraw and it is back in my bank account. If I deposit $100 in my nz TAB account they charge me $2.15 admin fee to do it.  If I somehow manage to win I must get in a car drive to the TAB and withdraw it.

Southland reacted to cherry_bomb in authorized syndication - your evaluation or experience(s)
I'm in syndicates with a taranaki trainer. Communication is excellent and you can drop out of a syndicate any time. Going with a lesser known trainer was a deliberate decision to be able to have some more input. The larger operations may have more chance of success with any given horse but Id rather be able to speak to the trainer and not feel like I should be quiet and just read the newsletter.
Advice to a newcomer would be don't worry about breeding or sale rights for now just get into a local racing syndicate where you can go help out around the stable if you want, help choose the name and have some fun at the races.

I used to be in one a few years ago. I agree with Nice Option about invoices slowly creeping up and more and more massages , farrier, and vets etc. The thing I did not like was your name is not in the book, the horse raced in the syndicators colours and he took home the trophies even though he never had a share in the horse. He made all the decisions and we had to pay him a 10% fee every month for management. Sure I knew this beforehand but I did not think it would affect me like it did. I wanted to breed from it but the manager decided it had to be sold . He sold it privately, and I am not saying anything dodgy went on, but it was certainly not as transparent as an auction would have been. Plus he took 10% of the sale price as well.Once you learn how this game works you are better off racing one yourself and getting a few mates in. It is not that hard. There are plenty of well respected bloodstock agents out there that will purchase the horse on your behalf. Good luck

Southland reacted to .... in Handicapping model corrupt ?
Jacksstar has less weight than Bloodstream as Bloodstream is a victim of being consistent and therefore doesn't lose rating points
Jacksstar in the last 12 months amongst his wins (His only Open Class win was in a Group 3 as a rating 76 horse and he got penalised 7 points for it) has had his rating dropped by a total of 8 points as he throws in bad races, in the same time Bloodstream has lost just one point amongst all of his wins.
As has been mentioned the current system penalises "Consistent" horses and Bloodstream fits this boat

I am hot on this subject. The 60kg topweight must have, has a hell of a lot to answer for.
In my opinion 60kg in a 1200m race is not the same handicap as 60kg in a 3200m race. ie: the further the distance the more the weight becomes a handicap. Now who can remember horses carrying 9 1/2 stone in 2 mile cup races on a regular basis?
I would recommend the weights be based on the following topweights with bottomweights reducing in accordance.
    1200m and less - 60kg
    1200 - 1400m -59kg
    1400 - 1600m - 58kg
    1600 - 2000m - 57kg
    2000m + - 56kg

Southland reacted to Michael Roustoby in Whip ban inevitable..???
This guy wrote a similar article about Jumps racing a while back and how we had to ban it to move forward.
I respect his opinion  but don't agree with it.
The whole idea of "Public Perception" is easily fixed by education. Teach the public that the sticks are padded foam and don't hurt the horses.
Do you really think banning the whip is going to attract more people to racing or more punting dollars?
Ban the whip and they will go after 2yo racing next. Will breakers be required to break in horses without gear and literally be horse whisperers? Spurs, tongue ties, nose bands, blindfolds where do they stand?
Animal Rights activists are a cancer to racing and won't stop until there is not racing.
I have heard that the whip rules will be relaxed at the next Racing Australia meeting and not banned.
There are some horses who need a wake up call with the stick to get going. Their careers will be over.
Educate the public, ban jockeys who overuse the whip and flog horses especially horses who aren't in contention. But keep the whip,as Bossy says they need a few taps to keep their mind on the job.
Maybe the over sensitive people we are breeding today are offended by the word "whip" and we need to change its name to make them feel better? persuader or "wand" with Harry Potter being so popular might make them feel better about it?
Seriously though Education is the key if "public perception" is the issue here. Just my opinion.
