There were some great old horses back then, most mentioned here. Always followed Peter Louis' horses - Harry's Pal, John's Pal and co.
Some great mudders like Gus, Car Park Flyer, Cattle King, Skoota and Conan....tough old buggers most of them.

Great to read the list of 47.
Interestingly, 8 of the top 10 were from the South Island, and 5 of those horses raced only in the South Island from memory, where there were very few, if any, mid week meetings.
    Cheers.

I am sure David Walsh works for the Allstars, so this might be the reasoning behind the dabble into thoroughbreds .

    Hi Col,
The 10% is a strange one really. What is it actually for? In many cases the trainer recommends to sell, so he understands he will be losing potential training fees and percentages.
What would the be position if the connections of a horse take someone else into the partnership, and the horse changes trainers? Does the original trainer get 10% of the newbies buy in?
As I am writing this, it has just dawn on me, if we abolished the 10% trainers clause, then there is good chance more horses would stay in N.Z. I think most reasonable owners would give the trainer a gratitude stipend.  Look, I know it is tough training horses, and the variables can be cruel at times, and the 10% is a bonus that has been a given in the past, and it is a really hard one to try to be fair on all parties.
    Cheers.

    Hi Col,
To put my two bobs worth in.
The general unkind feelings voiced on here when Christen Me left for the U.S.,  the owners were greedy, and should have given him a good home here instead of selling him. Playing Devils advocate then, should not the same apply to Lazarus? What has the horse got to prove? If a fast mile is required, why not time trial at Ashburton?
Just putting another view on things.
    Cheers.
    Robert.

    Hi John,
Agree with you, and hey, if it is too cold to run at Ashburton in June, how much warmer is it going to be 80km away in Christchurch?
I have been to 3 Jewels in Ashburton, and each time was able to stand on the galloping track and watch the action.
    Cheers.

Clubs running race meetings at alternative tracks is not uncommon.   Addington ran the interdominions at Alex Park from memory after the earthquakes, Rangiora and occasionally Timaru have run meetings at Addington.
If the Met were to hold the Jewels at Ashburton it would be a good compromise between the administrators who want certainty around competent organisation
and those of us who see mile racing and the carnival atmosphere as an integral part of the whole Jewels concept.   Ashburton is the best mile track in New Zealand by far.

Unbelievable that our mare, which we had almost given up on a few months ago should win three straight races. Never owned a horse that won three on the spin before. Great training effort form Richard Collett and his team and young Kavish the 4Kg claimer has been a revelation!

    Hi John,
Perhaps, I might be regarded as one of those hungry owners, but 15 years ago, when our horse, a 6 year old, was finding it hard in the top grade, we sent him to the US. Okay, we did not sell him, but kept in the ownership. These horses are bred to race, and if their racing life can be extended, with careful consideration, then it is a good situation for horse and owner. He performed creditably, but unfortunately died, when he had a heart attack.
The dream of getting a good horse is the optimum for us owners, and wishing everyone in ownership of this wonderful sport, the best of luck in those endeavours.
    Cheers.
