  1. Another great Taranaki horse was Tara's Pride trained at Stratford by Ansford. She won in 1967 the Thorndon Mile..also the other great horse of its time kaukapakapa who won in 1973... Talking about jackpots Peter Moran won 482,000$ in 1970 at Matamata..then I remember the great Panzer Chief winning plenty for Moran..one meeting I recall with the jackpot was Ashhurst meeting at Awapuni in 70 it was full on crazy!!
  2. I know there where many that became accomplished in this type of race...after their careers had-or had not finished. Any ideas mainly from the 1960s to 1980s
  3. Jan's Beau was a consistent horse, making the pace. I guess early mid 80s. Anyone remember..Golden Rhapsody a great horse racing in the Auckland area..
  4. What about Peter Moran, he had a horse called Panzer Chief...I think he won the on course jackpot worth million dollars or so...that horse won plenty.
  5. You recall a horse early 80s liked the mud..Bonny Glo
  6. How is the Manawatu raceway going these days...used to go in the 70s...popular track in those days Tight little track if I recall. Remember the meeting the night before the Wahine Storm... Dad won the double that night with a Trotter by the name of Tutira...
  7. Yeah I'm sure it was Oranmore...Blue Nile was real quick as well...
  8. Great story Peter...I lived in Wanganui and went to just about every racecourse on the North Island. I went with my father as I was under age when it came to having a bet... Fort Hagen was my dad's favourite horse and do remember him racing around the central districts. Also the jackpot days where there where thousands on course...them where the days! Do you recall the mud lark Monastic... Friends I have in Palmerston North where related to Gus Clutterbuck...where is he now? Ballycastle was anothe favourite of mine...made some money out of him.. Biff...Simon de Montfort paid a fortune once winning the Wellington Cup...if I'm right..early 70s?
  9. Hi Guys... What was the name of the horse that was a tear away pacemaker in the early/mid 80s generally Avondale....used to get miles in front then stop like it hit a brick wall!
  10. Thanks guys, where do you get all this information. Any background on another horse...Sherwood.. He won a race Nov 71 at long odds Awapuni...dollar each way netted 100$ or so.
  11. Hi, anyone remember a horse by the name of...Fort Hagen raced in the Central District area early 70s..also Danios raced similar time...
  12. Hi Beerwithduncan, yeah the Super Snipe was the upmarket of the two. It was a six cyclinder as opposed to the minx which was a four. Yes I have the vinyl of that 1971 race with True Averil...but would love to see it on the screen. I backed it that day but didn't realise it was paying so much. I believe she died around 1983. Was my favourite from that time. What a staggering amount of money offered. Do you know when she retired...maybe not long after that?
  13. Yeah, my first car was a Hillman super minx...bloody awful car.
