  1. * Mistakenly posted this in the harness cafe so here goes again * Does anyone read or collect books any more? I have spent a fair bit on my collection over the years, and an now looking to refine it to more manageable numbers. I have decided to part with most of my thoroughbred racing books ... Is there any interest out there? I was thinking about keeping just my Melbourne Cup ones ... but undecided (they're not pictured). I have pictorals, novels, histories, biographies, and the "business" of racing. Most of the ones pictured can go, and there are a lot not pictured. Questions? Location is North Canterbury. Thanks for reading
  2. Oh dear ... posted in the wrong category - sorry. Have reposted in the TB cafe. Admin - please delete, and my apologies. I do have some harness racing books, but not as many.

  4. It was a rough day on Monday - It is with much sadness that we report the passing of our American-bred Standardbred stallion, Danny B. He was a month short of his 28th birthday. He came into our care from the SPCA on March 31, 2010. We made the decision to let him go on Monday evening after he had taken a nasty turn and was clearly struggling. The vet was not convinced he would recover and it was the right thing to do. He deserves his rest. We had him for nearly 8 years. For the record: Best mile time 1min 51.2sec. His long American career ended with 55 wins, 51 second placings and 50 third placings. His stakes earnings totalled $US462,979, back in the day when the greenback had some real value. He had a phenomenal 336 race starts, doing much of his racing in Florida. He was imported to New Zealand in 2003. RIP big guy. Here's the article Neil wrote about Dan in 2014, with the original pics when Danny was found. He had a Body Condition Score of 0. https://www.horsetalk.co.nz/2014/09/15/stallion-came-in-from-cold/
  5. That's what I wondered! Dammit, more $ down the drain. Such is life.
  6. Or has the world gone online?! After being a "collector" for many years I am de-cluttering and the first things to go are the stud books, I have 13 NZ volumes from 1949 to 2000, a couple trotting ones, welsh pony, clydesdale and others. Back in the day they were pricey to buy - but have they gone the way of encyclopedia Britannica? Do I just put them on Trade Me? Any advice appreciated. thanks.
  7. Checking in with Mike Brown (Canterbury). The brand appears to be Reverse E Conjoined O. Will post when I know more. If only NZ Racing's stud book was searchable by brand ...
  8. Just been talking to Callaghan McCormick, and that is not their brand. Back to square 1.
  9. I have found a phone number for the breeder ... I think!
  10. Yes - it looks like a backwards E conjoined with a C. I am hunting around now - thank you!! Will keep you all posted with progress
  11. Yes, I figured it was likely a vet's brand given the high numbers on the offside. After I posted I thought it may not even be a Canterbury brand. Thanks.
  12. Thanks, I did know this but was hoping to ID the cypher brand .. as I am doing a favour for a friend I was wanting to to the detective work myself, without coughing up. Standardbreds are so much easier!
  13. HI all I'm helping a friend find out who her horse is .. procured from a Rangiora stable (don't know which one). She has no idea on name, breeding, or anything - other than this mare didn't make the grade as a racehorse. If anyone can tell me whose brand this is (I am guessing a local vet), I would be grateful. thanks
