About time the Poms had something to crow about since James Cook and Sebastian Coe retired ,as not a lot in the other things they thought up like cricket and rugby !
I doubt too many NZ based trainers even went this year to the land of the dodgy politics and covid and extreme weather...did any even try ?
Maybe a small stable from Taranaki...I unsure ,too busy watching the the one-sided borefests from NRL with all the sin binning...gone soft  the brain damaged ,soon they be following on from the Pommie rugby players and sueing the Sport !
NZ trainers too busy concentrating on the jumpers , making up the 5 and 6 horse fields here !

Something a bit different and certainly an opportunity for some horses who came  North for Jewels to stay on and have another race for  decent money ,plus a winter break for other Southerners !
It seemed to add interest to an otherwise dull winter meeting .....certainly some southern connections seemed to enjoy the experience ,and it was good to see those Southland horses racing .I spoke to several owners of the lower rated horses and they pleased to be racing for those stakes.
When the conditions were drawn up ...weeks ago if not months ago....no one would have known the widespread of ratings. They got two good size fields and the other fields held up....10 races with 3 x divis !
With the times they run at AP its hard from the 'bad draws' so the preferential draw made things a little fairer. Cos Dance Card has explosive gatespeed drawing 9 didnt bother it but Pembrook Playboy found it tough.
With the trotters I guess they looked at possible starters in the North and went for a 2700m handicap ......only 1 x Southerner started [Midnight Dash] but it was favourite and again created a lot of interest !
The main trots in North are generally stand start handicaps.

Fake news. Not the case from the "head on" that was shown. Horse in gate 5 anticipated the start and pushed gate open, followed by approx. same Gate 7 or 8, then a general shambles as others opened. Makes a good story though Memphis.

Oopik also featured in another great call from PK when he beat favourite Fury's Order in HB Guineas.

agreed , what a sporting nation indeed, talk about punching above your weight , the rise of the kiwis in cricket particularly has been similar to sri lanka, imagine in the 60s thinking Ceylon would win a world cup.
NRL, theres one team nearly full of kiwis .....
as Jesus said to the Pharisees , let thou who is without sin cast the first stone.

    Couldn't agree more Chevy.
Many of Sport's greatest have had meltdowns of different varieties , both in NZ and on world stage.
Jordan ,Woods , Maradona ,Piggot ...the list goes on.
They can't all be Peter Snell's....
    pogo loses it over Tennis.
The only normal people are people we haven't met yet.
KFC is apparently the preferred meal for the clients where pogo resides...the NSW State home for the Bewildered !
Actually I prefer McDonald's...surely the GOAT ...but thats a debate for another day !
You can meet pogo if they let him out for the last Great Northern Steeples in September !

This is what I will do upon my coronation as king of the TAB and high priest of racing. Most of the problems relate to money and as the biggest punters on NZ racing are from OZ we should be aiming to give THEM a better product to maximise their spend. How ? Start by trying to LOWER the average dividends across the board( lower prices mean more winners reinvesting as opposed to 1 big winner who banks it/ buys a car etc) by changing from hcp racing to wfa on most races( hcps would stay for traditional features),by changing the calendar on all weekday races to create " circuits" leading up to saturday features. It is important to have consecutive weds for example racing the same horses/ jockeys/ tracks to give those bigger punters more confidence. This is a trickle up system starting with punters and ending with more aussie dollars to pay for anything and everything and making punting more attractive to kiwis. This means shutting tracks but I would put it to those tracks to create a " circuit" of their own with or without other clubs/ tracks and let the turnover do the talking.

Hi JJ (you never responded to my post showing tab place odds over 10% behind competitors)

I agree the current board got handed a poisoned chalice and after $100m ($50m plus 3 years $17m maintenance fee) being spent on it there was no going back.  However I still do not believe this platform performs to a leave expected for $100m (equal to competition).  This is a platform that still seems to require a lot of manual input (bonus bet $2m and the football not paid out bet public examples, I have a few other private ones too….).

So personally I would say to supplier I expect more.  This is how I act in my life, I am taking my 5yo unraced horse back to NZB soon as I brought it at the ready to run (and it obviously wasn’t ready to run) .

In my book "Greatness" also encapsulates "Character "T.Man and for that reason when we look beyond the numbers Novak will never pass muster compared to Roger and Rafa--IMO. Similarly Serena's petulance and plain nastiness will never elevate her above the "Grace" of Margaret, Chrissy, Steffi, Martina et al.

Not the slick Aussie presentation here Memphis where our resources and budgets a country mile behind Aussie.
Impossible to tell the costs involved compared to benefit of the different presentations.
Does the more professional approach attract more people to the Industry long term...and lead to more involvement ,betting and profits ?
    Impossible to tell.....
But I note that on the bigger days in NZ racing when more effort put in there is at least one interviewer ,one camera man and one 'producer' putting these interviews together and then possibly extras in the Van editing and organising.
The extra costs would be interesting...not only wages but travel etc.
When NZ racing basically hit bankruptcy last year these services were first to go ....radio also apparently was hit with considerable infrastructure/costs ,on towers etc.
Last time on-course I noted the frail condition of the selling machines....a maintenance man was racing around with rolls of tape keeping the things together !I guess the push to Digital will be the next adjustment us oldies need to make...I read where Aussie now up to 85% bets made digitally !
In NZ top 10 % of punters do over 70% of punting[ stand to be corrected here ! ,but rough enough].....do they require all the 'nice to have' services ?
Bleak weather today ,time to reflect !

    Indeed, TM...
Im unacquainted with any of the 10% you refer to, but I would be curious to learn from a few of them (they use this site, no?)  just how much they get out of Trackside.
I presume they do their own form study etc and couldn't care two hoots about the Trackside Presenters' annoyng habit of saying things like: 'Horse A is the fave and I like Horse C. Horse G has been trialling well. And of course you can't ignore Horses X, Y and Z.'
And then, should any combo of that lot come in, having to hear their colleagues praise them to high heaven for their skill!
'If youd boxed (Presenter A') horses, you'd have struck that $50,000 First Four.
Erm, no, because of course the divvy would have been pro-rata reduced by the number of punters suckered in to the 'non tips', heh.
And it usually is a major surprise, anyway, if any of the presenrtes tip anything loner than five or six to one, heh.
I must admit that I only tend to watch Trackside for specific races - usually big Carnival meetings. Before any given race I l;ike to 'learn' my nag's colours and those of the fave.
Afterwards, I like to hear, eg, how the jockey/trainer/owner felt about their success.

Ive posted basically the same on here  numerous times TM  More like 20-80 now and the 80 seem to want more of everything including Trackside Radio which whilst a " nice to have" was the first to go in times of financial stress and calls from the industry to CUT COSTS. Likewise the failure to invest in terminals for decades sees them now vulnerable and probably not worth fixing. Digital is way forward overseas so good to see us finally getting with the program

Sounds exciting Memphis.......have you ever been to Sapphire Coast races ?
They seem to get a lot of Heavy tracks there...must be in a rain belt ?
I note there were 6 races from there today ,4 of them only had two dividends ,the highest quinella was $11. One race had 8 scratchings.
Sunday in NZ has harness racing....and today a Bonus of Timaru races with a Jumps race.
Pogo will be pleased.....check it out ,some well bred horses in the Hurdle race. I just watched it ,hard to tell if the horses were blowing steam or someone started a fire close to track. The race delayed cos 3 riders late cos of flights !Seems most jockeys ,and several horses from North Island.
The winner was an ex-Myers horse having first start over Hurdles...he can place them.
The two best bred horses failed to finish......looks like the jumps season going to create a lot of interest !

Agreed ........ my memory seems to recall that the callers started do picks in every race started about 20 years ago when Reon Murtha, Tony Lee , George S etc started giving picks on radio between 8am -9am race day and then live on TV about 1 hr before first race.
During stressful times like Cup Week in Christchurch I wondered how they could even find time to look at fields let alone do useful study to make selections.
The odd one prior eg Alan Bright had advantage of being a print journalist [from memory ?]

Going back to the pre-Trackside era the commentators had to be good at describing the race - there was no video to accompany their call. Now that the races can be seen live the commentary is pretty much just background noise ... the commentators can dribble on all they like ... we can see what we need to know with our own two eyes!
The commentators role since the inception of Trackside has evolved from that of a race caller to that of a betting stimulator!
