  1. .....the tie in with Sport !!! I bet Pogo has one!!!
  2. ......I did expect better from you , but your stocks have risen considerably since it has been exposed that your pedigree goes back to Caterbury....the n is silent! You are another bloody Mainlander!! While in the States did you ever play at the Georgia Polo Ground...Atlanta. Did you know admin.such as Clarence Culpepper orMichael Machado. In fact did you ever play on Eastern side.
  3. .....Last day for answers. This is our National Sport , afterall. These people have sacrificed much for our country , some were penniless , others had to move overseas to earn a living , one cut his finger off to play for the AB's. Another played after breaking his back , and played with a broken arm in a cast. Others influence our choice of undies and breakfast cereals....I can't help there hasn't been more from Wellington !!!!! Get with the game !!! Would you prefer a quiz on inline Skating?? The answers are ,in the main tha Creme de la Creme !!!!
  4. .....is willing to take cos if , rather when he wins he will be known as Sir Graham. I think its too late now for the IRB to tweak the rules to bring the ABs back to the field. And no way will Sir G send his team to Huka Falls and on Safari in the middle of WCup.
  5. .....you are close with a few , work on it !! Where were you in !960's and !970's when rugby was a religion and only about 17 players were used in a 4 test series , and rugby was a religion in NZ. And the home team/Shield holder generally won with home-town refs etc etc Pub close to 'Lancaster Pub'.....no way...are you trying to pin that bad behaviour toward Australians on me?? I saw the letter in The Press from those Perth execs who walked in the pub and were told to "F@%& off you losing Aussies". Canterbury crowds are bad !!!!! That's a given.
  6. .....can't confirm or deny the connection to the great False Step. But great work with the association. If we ever end up in the same rest-home there will be some good sessions. "The older we get , the better we were"
  7. ......Heeps apparently won 3 NZ 100yd sprints and Tony Steel wonboth 100 and 200 while TM won 200 title and was prominent in 100m as well. Apparently a number of others competed over the years in sprints at big events. These incl Bill Davis[HBay] also a NZ softball rep ,P Morrisey , BFord[Marl],KCarrington and TTwigden [beach Sprinting]. Much eariler PHenderson was a sprint champ who went to Comm.Games, and you toch on GSmith. Jack Steel was a pro-sprnter in '20's and later a prominent Harness Racing owner. Also of interest was Rev Ian Botting who was also prominent in Athletics and Cricket , he also played a rugby Test for England and in 60's and 70's coached the Christ's College 1st XV where he would have coached some ex players incl John Wright and Roddy Fulton who is a participant on here!!
  8. ......the run started in 1931 eventually ending in 1950 when Canterbury halted Otago's run only to lose it to Wairarapa when officialdom over-ruled their decision to limit challenges for rest of season.....typical Cant. !! Then Wairarapa tried the same stunt saying their farmers were too busy to play......but they had to play South Cant and lost , then SC generously put it up v a very keen North Auckland. My two rugby book both by Paul Verdon.....one on AB coaches and other on AB captains....both obviously missed the 1934 year when Hawkes Bay and Auckland briefly interrupted a Canterbury run !!! Q11.....no one 'bit' to my flippant comment re Auckland's run between 1985 and 1993 when they repulsed a record 61 challenges. #2 run......1960-63 Auckland.....25 games #2 ......1982-85Cant.....25 #4 ......2000-03Cant.....23 #5 .....1997-00Waikato23 Shortest reign....7 days Wellington 1963 Central to Aucklands record run was coach MTrapp who coached the team from 1987-1991. From 90 games he lost 3 , was unbeaten for 46 games[1 draw] , with a winning streak of 44games. When he lost the Shield ,he had an excuse as 13 AB's preparing for World Cup were not allowed to play. But the Manager inflamed the anti-Auckland feelings by starting the speeches....."Congrats on beating Auckland B" Thanks to Northern Correspondent for this RS info.
  9. .....keep the stories coming !!!!
  10. ......a couple of typos Q9.....indeed 3 sets of brothers / Q11.....should be successful KICKS not just conversions ?? I see Greg Burgess mentioned , and CTaylor stepped in with some correct info. Yes ,Greg did play at Wellington v Boks in '81 , his sole test tho some say a game in 1980 v Fiji made him an All Black before that. As I had a little to do with him, I will risk a parasite/sponger attack from Gastro and give some interesting associated trivia. Greg Burgess went to Otago Uni in mid 70's, I think from Auckland. He played in the OU under 20's about the same time as the late John Drake was a prop in that Grade. Greg was a winger , quite fast and big and he also liked Athletics espec sprints and shotput. Unusual for that time but he did weights...soon after he became NZ power lifting champ and placed in NZ Shot Put. In rugby he moved to the Union club , at North Ground , very close to the University and became a No 8. Very strong , he moved to front row and back to Ponsonby and Auckland and became an AB. He has done well in business and currently is in Real Estate in big firm on corner beside Marina in Milford , North Shore so probably a neighbour of the Cat. At the Union Club at the time were some interesting types... Their Capt was an ex-Waikato and NZ Maori player NAM Pickrang.....Noel or better known as Butch. Butch played for the South Island around this time at Fullback , tho sometimes played 2nd 5.......he was tough in the Fergie McCormick mould and would happily take on the biggest forwards. I think the coach was Muru Walters a Maori chief/minister. Muru played in backs for North Auckland and one year won the Tom French Cup....I feel Quiz 3 questions rising to the surface !!!!! Anther Union player at this time features as another answer , so leave it til later on. Over past 25 odd years Union has merged with Alhambra a north Dunedin club perched up on hill close to world's steepest street. At this time Alhambra's player coach was Rex Smith a cracking but small flanker for Otago and NZU teams, considered close to AB's. He tried to poach University players , his best success being Tim Bircher who wet on to play for Otago and I think Auckland. Around this time halfbacks around Dunedin were the late Lin Colling , Mark Romans and Chris Moreland the latter two currently have sons in ITM Cup. I must stop as this player association could go on for days !!!! I hope you enjoyed the Greg Burgess story !!
  11. .....some well thought out answers , though some need further work. Good to see CTaylor showing a bit of enthusiasm , hiding ability with a casual approach. FY! to give latecomers a crack at all answers , I will wait a couple of days before highlighting complete CORRECT answers. Of course , no reference books used so I may have to follow up on a couple as I was fishing a bit on a couple eg Q16 Players selected for AB's but never played......I know a few but there could be dozens ,as since 1950's when no subs allowed at all , replacements were then only allowed after a Doctors OK given , so Test caps were not given away for a few minutes. Some players eg Lyn Davis 'rode the pine' for years before getting to play. I'm sure others just made the photo.
  12. .......Part 2 for your Diploma. Geez....Manu scores 3 tries , Nothland score 70 points and Nadal falls over and not a whimper. Please focus some of your testosterone on our #1 Sport !!! 13. ....for you!!! I'm glad I still have your undivided attention. Thanks to all who have sent cards and letters re the success of the first Quiz. Great warm day here....a little to do , a bit of sport to watch and officiate in....I feel Quiz 2 coming on ,maybe late tonight. Ex article re Bert Sutcliffe in SST. Brought back some great memories re some of Otago's fav sons espec AEDick and FJCameron. Plus one of Wellys rugby boys speaks out !!!
  14. ....will follow up. Us Southerners used to hear about this era when we were kids , and I saw this mentioned in one of the 2 books I have access too. Cheers.
  15. ......my back goes out more than I do , I get winded playing checkers. I'm an old man , in need of a new knee, poor eyesight, and got my 'sports heart' fixed up a while ago...however I do still have quite an involvement....but it could take a while to tell you. The ref to sponger was another word for parasite which a cheeky bonehead called me on here , and I am simply not prepared to ignore that along with the other questioning my integrity. Keep supporting that Otago sport....I had some fantastic times involved there....but some other time cos that could be a long story. ps.....just watched the Grand National....the battles of Koral and Robert Earl etc .....aaaahhh the memories!!
  16. ......moving from subject to subject ,hoping that some of your mud will stick. Well the invite I received had me heading out to Saxton Field which afterall is close to Greenmeadows where the Rugby was held. Afterall I am the local Patron of one the Sports being held.LOL Plus I was involved yesterday with a Sec Schools ,Senior A sports comp ,so couldn't attend your big "tiny toons" small fries event played outside in a storm. So not only are you a bonehead ,you are a cretin as well !!!!! Pack it in , so far you are not scoring many points !!!! ps....don't call me mate !!!!
  17. .....I'm sure this is a plead for a sponger to enter the fray. After all this thread was an invite for me to comment on Sport. Jeff Rackley......yes I've had a bit to do with him !!! :D A function of living in a small village !!! When I first came to look at Tasman , Jeff met me and showed me around houses. He had recently moved out of teaching into Real Estate where he remains today. A few weeks ago I went to a Quiz he MC'd at his beloved Nelson College....he volunteers for quizes and charity auctions etc a lot ,and last year featured in Queens Honours. He is ground commentator here at big matches and did have a sports show on Radio. Of course his father was legendary boxing coach and his bros and Jeff were NZ champs , Jeff also won Jamieson Belt. Jeff was best known as a boxer who went to Olympics but he also played cricket and rugby for Nelson. In fact I think he spent a couple of seasons playing cricket in England , and in a note he sent me recently...don't encourage me Jeff.....he said he'd recently returned from trip to Europe. I met Jeff at Otago Uni....he was a relation of top Otago ref Jeff Walker...and he began his rugby with Zingari then moved to the rugby factory Otago Uni. I played with him in front row, a bit , the other member being Paul Sapsford [AB] or Junior AB prop/lock Paul Oliver , bro of Frank. Jeff was great mates with the late John Matenga whose son Honi plays for Otago.Otago boss Wayne Graham was there as well as was Tasman coach KKeane , but thats another story. Jeff married a good allround sports woman who was NZ champion at darts and good golfer , and they have 2 daughters. Yes he stills plays a bit of cricket for Wakatu. And he enjoys a bet and is on committee of Nelson Trot Club. If you need more info ,sing out. Cheers
  18. .......always enjoyed a battle agin some bonehead with a bit of lip !!!! However it makes one worry about the standard of education for young kids. Even around here there is a shortage of males.....they take anyone who applies,I know a couple who joined up recently !!!
  19. ......plenty more to come then. Haha if I known you were at some non-event in the rain ,I would have gone out to Saxton and rubbed your nose in the mud. The beauty of living in a small village !!! FYI , neither of my sons went to Prep and my daughter went to Nayland so you must be thinking of some other sycophant. So WRONG again. Most of those schools who go to those 'Primary Schools sports events' don't have enough pupils to enter a team in each sport , so its simply numbers and 'have a go', if your team won then I hope you bought them a TT2. I heard there was some bonehead behaviour on the sidelines as the schools with 500 beat up on the ones with 50. ps.....Moose may have won once ,MAX v NC......NC have been in the top4 of Press Cup for past 8 years at least while Moose's lot has consistently been in bottom 4 . NC has often made the final as well and a couple of years back had 10 ex-players in NPC ,so you are full of it....Bonehead!!
  20. .....got pipped close to line, MPurdon didn't show much viguor in stretch which could earn him some grief. Franco Jamar won well from trail from Devil Dodger and Lanercost. DeLoverly won real easy. But Smiling Shard was classy winning in 1min56sec MR. High Kiwi hopes for finals !!!
  21. ......Gastro ??? You mock me for claiming I had a bit to do with the lad , then admit I did. And multiply it by 3 , so you cover 3 sports....rugby , cricket and basketball. My guess is you know his Dad.....he works with blocks and bricks. You truly are a Bonehead !!!
  22. ....... Q6....Surname.....heard this one at a quiz run by keen sportsman a few weeks back.....he gave the answer as WILSON ,so lock it in. Number not given but serious fans will know Jeff and Stew ,plus Otago fullback Bevan [80's],Cant fullback Richard [80's], Norm [49-50] a hooker who used to do TV comments , then Hec , DD and Len from early 1950's.Possibly a Counties Wilson in 1980's too plus up to 4 or 5 Wilsons from the early days....before the WW2. Q7....Oldest captain....Tane Norton took this off Colin Meads by a couple of months.....about 35 yrs 4months. Actually 1987 World Cup capt Andy Dalton was older again but unable to play. Q8....First front rower.....prop Kevin Skinner in 1952....good Otago man , who won NZ heavy weight boxing title. Q8....Answered that Auckland and AB halfback also played for Australia. Des played and captained Australia 1957-59 then moved to Auckland. He played for AB's from 1961-64 , but replaced by CLaidlaw and KBriscoe for big UK tour. He later returned to Aussie becoming a selector then Coach. He hatched a cunning plan v AB's in 1968 and used short lineouts for first time. The AB's ,with CLaidlaw as captain for only time needed a late penalty try to win the game. Q9.....YES they all played for Canterbury....even Fred Allen !!! Q10.....from 1931 to 1950 , only Canterbury,Otago and Southland had the Shield , with Otago and Southland sharing it from 1936 to 1950. Otago had 11 players away in South Africa with AB's but still held the Shield. Now that was a rugby 'factory' !!! Q11....Auckland domination of Shield....Who Cares ???? It would take an age to sum this up , hoe did they repel the South Island teams for so long. JHart started as coach with 2 AB's in 1982 , they got the Shield in front of 52,000 fans from Canterbury in 1985 and then there were 14 Ab's. Fred Allen had 25 successful challenges between 1960 and 1963.Canterbury had 25 wins between 1982 and 1985. GFox scored over 900 points in Shield , more than twice the second top scorer Ben Blair, 3rd MCooper 4th Dingo Deans. Auckland domination from 1985 0n was sickening!! Q12 and Q13 answered earlier. Q13.....1st XV clash...In 1950 the halfback for New Plymouth Boys was a 1st 5 DJGraham ,and opposing was Auckland Grammar whose halfback WWhineray scored the winning try. Both became forwards who captained AB's . Q14.....answered earlier but I feel Barry F will stumble on some more. How about Canterbury winger AGSteel ?? Tony became an MP , I think! Q15.....Most All Blacks....Otago University , plus GHenry. Most Internationals incl Pacific Islands etc.....Ponsonby. As you have had so much fun with my Quiz , I feel another ,a bit easier coming on.
  23. .....some good guesses to rekindle a bit of nostalgia. Somehow I got two #8 and two #13 's. Answers....from very little research !!! Q1....Aussie won NIL night tests in NZ Q2....no yellow card....who cares....hometown decision , Kaplan facing different type of cussing than what he got when he gave John Eales a last-gasp penalty kick at Caketin. Q3....Wilson Whineray , in his first test as AB captain scored 2 tries v Australia in 1958..he was a 23 yr old prop. He had played 2 tests previous yr. He capt NZ in 30 tests to 1965[missed 1964] , never scored another test try. In famous moment v Barbarians at end of legendary 1963-64 British Isles [and Canada ,they used to say] WW broke away from Baabaa's and drew the fullback before pulling the most outrageous dummy on the fullback[could have been Bok Lionel Wilson] before sprinting behind posts. The AB's won 36-3 , the 3 going to AB Ian Clarke who drop kicked a goal from mark.Ian too was a prop and WW caught the ball behind posts as he knew what Ian could do. WW had brains and was a good advert for props , some of whom had to be turned around at halftime !!! WW....one of the best Captains !!!! Q4......A few guessed Jazz Muller. Now had this question been about , who at the time was the heaviest ever AB , OR who cut his hedge by lifting his lawn mower and doing the job , OR who liked to rise at 1am on eve of match and slip out for a feed of steak , eggs and chips...Jazz would be the man. But the punch a pom in front of Queen answer is Jack Hazlett from Southlands racing dynasty. Lock this answer in. Q5....Had to check a reference re the try scoring ratio......It was from all games , not just Tests. Obviously Joe Roko and DHowlett feature high on Test list as few 'mid week' games now. But in 1950's and 1960's games were often low scoring with few tries. I was hoping my 3 'oldest' AB's would be the answer but alas no... Ron Jarden is top of my list , then GSThorne second then CCullen ahead of GBatty who deserves a chapter by himself. As do the others , and CC has a book and GST too has many books incl cooking books out. I think Cat nailed this answer so it must be true. More answers tomorrow......the little kiwi has announced its lights out , cuddle up the teddy bears ......brrrrr..snow and rain on way tomorrow
  24. ......he coached the AB's in 1951 and won the series v Australia 3-0. But he had NEVER coached a provincial team or been a national selector. He had been a club player and captain, coched his club team and been a Southland selector. He was living in Wellington , representing Southland on NZRFU exec and helping Tom Morrison. Tom was a selector and he and other two were unavailable to travel and coach so Len applied and got it. He knew the Otago players incl my friends dad PJohnstone[captain] and Kevin Skinner and knew the Southlanders incl Bill McCaw. He had several new AB's in team and had never met many. But he had Ron Jarden who was a star winger. He also had the late dad of MMexted, the dad of SFitzpatrick,Ponty Reid and Bob Duff who went on to captain the AB's plus PBurke[1981] who like Duff went on to coach the AB's. The year after the AB tour Len Clode became a Wellington selector and was asst coach when the team upset Waikato for the Shield....they survived 5 challenges then lost it to ......Canterbury[naturally!]. He returned to Southland , bought a farm and became a Southland selector from 1957-1967. In 59 they thrashed Taranaki ,in upset , to win the shield but lost it to Auckland in first defence. In 1965 Southland drew 6-6 in shield match v Holders , Taranaki. Fascinating.....eh ??? As i have your attention I will answer Q12 , which was a bit tricky....re assembly of AB's before a Test. Well it wasn't a true Test but Len Clode's 1951 beat Australia 3-0 and stayed over there celebrating and shopping. They didn't feel like another game but they were down to play Auckland at Eden Park. They flew into the Waitemata Harbour on a Sunderland flying boat at 8am on game day......just 6 hours before kick off. They won a dull game 9-3. Great stuff , eh ??
