Oz sales date changes dictated the move of Karaka and Millions. Apparently will happen every 4th year.

But not defending the Matamata Monday or the programming for this weekend.

Public Holiday Mondays have been in decline for years (turnover and attendance), hence not as many these days. Turnover must be maximised to have any chance of increasing prizemoney. But also need to address the regions and keep the sport nationally relevant. A balancing act.

Agree somewhat, but have Pub Holiday Mondays been in decline due to the muggle that is the calendar , there are most certainly public holiday dates that would work in the regions. Surely the public holiday on course costs in particular for the club would be negated by better on course turnover due to it being a public holiday.

I think its a bit silly to compare a trainer that franks Kumara form by sending a horse north to run 2nd in a $250,000 Cup, and another trainer who sends a horse up from Riverton to run 4th in a Group 1 race with trainers who are struggling away down south to get a start in maiden $10,000 races.

The main message that comes out of these results is how important the South Island country tracks are to provide contenders and form for major North Island races.

Just wait until the AWT gets going at Riccarton: the SI will dominant Trentham meetings. It wouldn't surprise me if southerners get banned from Trentham for having an unfair advantage. Look what they can achieve using Kumara as a build up: with the AWT they will be unstoppable.

To be fair the AWT might be what stops them .

Come on now Huey......you getting abusive and trying to hurt my feelings.

I'll never challenge your exalted reputation as one of the most prolific [ and negative ] posters on the Internet.

Do you have runs on the board ?........or just like my barber's cat. All piss and wind !

Who does feed the other horses and hold the horses for the farrier ?

    Where have I got abusive?

Tell us how does Millar does it then? Let's hear it? How does he arrange to do it?

You're pulling an isolated scenario out that most smaller to medium sized stables couldn't do and you know it.

Don't confuse prolific negativity with reality and common sense, most of what I say and many others on this site comes to fruition, its not my fault you live in such a deluded state you believe most of the decisions being made are going to make the industry better, sit back and enjoy the ride.

What is this obsession you have with wanting to know how much skin people have in the game? Do you want to know my bra size as well???

No races Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday in the north. Weird. Surely the only weekend all year that this happens?

The industry isn't being very well run is it?

The gallops should be making more use of Sundays to attract crowds. The trouble is the country clubs are best at attracting crowds and they are hated by NZTR. I might go as far as saying they don't like giving country clubs Sundays as they will be embarrassed to see the crowds attracted. I happened to see a couple of trot races from Motukarara a couple of Sundays ago. Big crowd and the track looked great. It will be interesting to see how many turn up to the relocated Banks Pen meeting in a week or so.

No there is certainly an agenda at play and to be honest its actually killing the sport in this country , despite all the PR & BS you are hearing about KM night etc. I know I sound like a broken record but its sucking the sport dry of its base, all very well for these big stables to spend plenty at Karaka but they have got to have someone to race against if they are wanting to put a decent product up.

Look at those noms at NP this weekend, I do hope some big stables are going to come to the rescue with some horses , especially in the 2yo race.

  5. I realise you'd still incur the public holiday charges for many jobs on days like this, but here is a novel idea why not hold Anniversary Day meetings at small country clubs in the region  of the Anniversary  , surely that would create some cost savings with the volunteer base they have and also create those unique days for which the crowds come out for.

Not going to happen I know ,as its pretty obvious how much the current regime at NZTR hates country racing!

Less than 2 weeks after being publicly flogged for my 'delusionary' thinking that positive thinking and a bit of travel can bring trainers both starts for their horses and ultimately good outcomes , I notice many trainers have been campaigning horses in both Islands ,even several 'smaller' stables.

Last week Waikato trainer  Daniel Miller was represented at both Gore and Ellerslie ,one of his horses has recently travelled between both Islands with success.

But the standout at the weekend was ex-trotting trainer from Rangiora  Kenny Moore who won a race at Riccarton with a 48/1 shot ,PLUS almost tore off the Wellington Cup with 150/1 shot Bluey's Chance , a horse which cost $500 at South Island Sale. He sent it North for a few days and had not even met the jockey who had been riding the work.

Maybe this provides a clue to Huey and his loyal band of followers who asked "who feeds the horses and holds the horses for the Farrier !"

I think it provides more of a clue about how ignorant you are about the industry and how it works.

Did Millar take all his horses down to the SI for races over this extended period of time? Was he even at Riccarton to watch the horse win on Saturday? Where were the horses stabled and who looked after them?

Your other example is someone going somewhere for  a carnival, hello everyone knows that goes on. You were claiming that trainers can just up and find races elsewhere if they are not in their region.

There are 15 horses on minimum weiigh of 53kgs!!!  WWith a ratings spread of 22 points, 11 kgs!!  That means 10 horses are racing outside their handicap.

The Thorndon has a superstar in it, and a cracking horse in Rock on Wood, then it gets thin for this class of a race.

And if you have a 4yo maiden then you have to wait 2 weeks for 1200 maiden at Matamata (and watch the entries for that).

I'm guessing Channel 200 is the low cost option ..... shame when NZB should be showcasing  to the widest possible  audience of prospective  new owners 🙄

Freeview a pretty big audience I'd have thought.

I think they have done a great job getting it on there, it wasn't so long ago everyone (myself included) was screaming for trackside to be back on Trackside so to get the sales on there is fantastic!

then it is clear you can neither read or see. i think from reading your arguments, particularly across another site, you are making yourself look a bit plain on this topic.

if you cant unerstand despite various explanations, how it seems very obvious it was played against tote pool, and its repurcussion for this pool and its punters then thats on you.

will pays especially for a bet like tht before tote close would be a waste of time because the tote is adjusted on close, and why should the punter do that, would it not be reasonable to assume they would get a market rate price for return? give or take.

you are showing yourself to be a novice, and makes a mockery of our tab. you honestly think a ladbrokes or a bet365 would shit on their customers like this? even for a big group wagering in this manner, like fuck.

Exactly they screwed the tote punters.

Just for interest I went back to the 2020 results for the first 200 lots. 43 sold for $50k or less or passed with a reserve of $50k or less.( There were a few that sold for $20K.)

2020  had everyone who wanted come to NZ there. The other thing this year, is a lot more than usual NZ yearlings are being sold at the Aussie sales. I presume this is because of Covid restrictions.

I'm just trying to put yesterday into perspective.

Surely youd also have to be pretty happy with the Almanzor prices off the 30k fee, some nice ones still to come.

Just being silly now.....obviously 35 of scratchings were ballots and/or double acceptors....add a few wide draws ,plus change of track conditions .

Very adequate field size .....met the industry average......130 horses raced during the day.

    For mikenz benefit i w il l e x p l ai n.......d o ub l e a c c e p tor and b a l l o t s m e a n n o h o r s e s m i s s e d s t a r t  !

As for the South Island I been following a few 'maiden' stayers who have had their fair share of opportunities since racing resumed.

McGowan made my cup week ,where stayers had plenty of opportunities then Cromwell ,Asburton , Gore ,Southland, even Reefton .....so many maidens.

Check the history of Eisenhower and Super Tap and see their racing records....sure a bit of travel involved.Supertap has now won twice !

This time last year we had a maiden stayer in North and in the end had to race at Ruakaka adding $600 to travel costs.....no paying back to last then.We actually won about $6k before deductions and expenses....in the terrible field we faced ,and beat , only one horse has won since and that was at Greymouth !

Maiden staying fields tend to be of poor quality and  generally attract poor betting. They are often 'slugs' with no turn of foot or as in the South , North Island rejects.

But as the above mention Southern horses records show ,trainers are prepared to travel......its their choice where they have their stables and the ones who plan find a way eg they travel when they can work out how to get a couple of races in the one trip away. And MPitman up to recently would house horses at Waikouaiti to assist logistics .

    They don't cry , they create !

    NZ owners are very resillient.

Then there was the Waimate trainer who bought a couple of cheap horses off Gavelhouse ,potential jumpers ,so when lockdown wiped Southern jumping they took their 2 x horses up to Cambridge for a couple of months and had several wins and placings on both flat and jumping.

    They got moving...didn't sit at home a moan....poor me...we're doomed , there's no races for us !

Youre about as silly as the personnel at NZTR that get rid of race meetings at venues and then put 10+ race meetings on at tracks with inadequate facilities (not enough tie ups , stalls etc) and expect the industry to just deal with it.

Now you think stables can just up and take a small team and race them somewhere else on a whim, travelling hours or days at a time. Have you not been reading what  is going on in Aus?

So who works  all the horses left at home?

Who feeds  them, holds them when the farrier is there, changes their rugs etc etc etc?

You do realise that young horses don't break themselves in , teach themselves to gallop and learn to go through the gates on their own? But youre calling out stables as moaners and doomsayers cause they haven't got the time or operationally its not possible to do what youre suggesting ...pleeeassssse!

The industry is already struggling enough for adequate staff without listening to delusional thinking like this.

Now you think people have a choice where they train, so the poor guy that trains at Waimate can just sell up and move to Cambridge its that easy is it?

Grossed 195 mio for 5 days with a Median of 180K. Top priced lot was  sold for 1.9 mio. Interestingly WaikatoStud took 8 or so over and  Westbury more. Good idea to split them up at sales time and after all that's where the money is.

From an NZ perspective you'd have to be pretty excited if you had an Almanzor also , with 3 selling for good money and one making 800k!

  13. 1 hour ago, mike28 said:

thats what i would of thought. if it gets onto a big roomy surface like trentham or riccarton it will be winning especially down the chute.  thats a shame will have to get used to finishing in the fastest 600 and running second

Going for Westbury classic isn't she, $100k race just up the road compared to big trip away to Trentham, extra week prep, she is only 4yo plenty of time to get a G1 on CV you can't tell me she is going to run into horses of the quality of the 4 I've mentioned in Telegraph in that race.

  14. 21 minutes ago, voice of reason said:

the weakest telegraph for some time.

would have thought trentham would suit levante's style of racing perfectly

Still a very interesting race Tavi Mac vs Avantage va Marscapone vs Enzos Lad

The 2 & 3yo races are super exciting ( no way the K million 2yo race will have as a good a field as the Wellesley this year) all taking place on the best track in the country!

That Hawkes bay meeting had has always been poor numbers wise,if that was in South Island it would be shutdown,Wairarapa on jan 2 was helped by 5 trot races.

12 noms for the big race on Saturday at Trentham,11 for another, racings just the same as harness these days, very light on numbers in top class,.

Be interesting to see how many line up in the Wellington Cup,once an iconic race.

Broken record, but the whole thing needs a rejig. That won't happen while NZTR and others have an ulterior motive behind everything they are doing.

  16. If the line is the industry can't afford the races, then is it time to bring in another sphere of racing , perhaps for less stakes at the smaller venues (I know they are hell bent on selling the lot of them) something that would take racing back to these smaller venues and give the local community something to build on and owners are trainers some more options. It isn't hard, perhaps some lesser form of media to show them on, well less expensive that is.

But something to actually adequately service the industry, surely it isn't too much to ask for the brains trust at NZTR to come up with some ideas, like clubs fund half stakes or something. I know the issue here in NZ is that those meetings would likely be far more successful than a lot of the larger meetings and that in itself would be an issue with the strategy the industry continues to aimlessly pursue for the benefit of but a few!

  17. 3 hours ago, jeepers said:

No Huey. Hopefully we will be doing better than that as other unhappy owners are involved, we have another strategy which just needs a majority approval.

Once I shift to my new property in a few months I will have  a Track,a treadmill ,a walker and a pool. No more pro trainers and no more multiple owners. I will then race my half brothers and sisters to Kufu's dam, plus others bred, myself ----- Until I fall off the perch. I may not have as much success, but I will have a lot of fun.

Excellent, good luck with that. I'm sure you'll enjoy every moment of it!

How would you like to be paying $90 +GST (Aus)per day to a Trainer to have your horse put on a walker every day for a month, under the guise of Pre Training. Excuse was the horse recovering from a sore back.

So did you end up buying your own walker and putting the horse on it twice a day before sending it off to the trainer when it had done its pre-training?

I actually  think sky get it right in regards to streaming, you have a choice, you can watch it on tv or stream it through a alternative package,(sky now) everyone's got options

No one is ever completely happy, whatever Sky or Spark do,a few years back when the NRL was about to start Sky was trying to secure rights but the NRL had upped their price, many threatened to leave Sky if they didn't have the matches,so if they had paid big money to get rights then raised their rates they would leave as well,it worked out in the end I guess.

The point is , I don't mind paying for it, but I'd like the option of having it all in one place , thats up to the providers to find a way to achieve , having to subscribe to several packages, use several apps etc is downright annoying imo

  20. 10 hours ago, tasman man said:

I'm not surprised you agree with mikenz , you two seem to be two peas in a pod !

The cricket thru Spark is only $24.99 a month  to subscribe to....include the other Spark sports and it is great value.

Maybe even your Sky subscription can be modified to possibly save money.

But surely anyone who can regularly punt on horses and at the same time post prolifically on racing websites can spare $25 bucks to watch great cricket.

What part of NZ are you in , and do you currently have any skin in the game ?

Have you attended any race meetings since start of summer.....gate charges have varied between $10 and $40 !

I'm not surprised you react like you do, youre in the "everything is awesome" brigade , that is of course until it has an impact on you.

I've got plenty of skin in the game and had a few race over the summer, so don't try an lecture me from your high horse.

No thanks to the Spark sport , its yet another subscription based service for sport , its all getting a bit much for me at my age , I used to just be able to turn the TV on and watch what I wanted, things haven't improved they have only become more inaccessible & an expensive for the average guy like me.

While we are at give us a good "bleat" about how much of a good punter you are , you know you want to I can smell your $1.5 shots from here, c'mon don't be shy let us know what a big hotshot you are on the punt, not like I haven't seen a thousand or your kind before.
