6000 on course. Ex PM too, but not the current one. I guess that he will be at Ellerslie on Saturday. You can’t be everywhere!

Far out only 6000. It’s not that long ago the crowd would have been close to 3-4 times that.

Geez , just seen the first pictures from Trentham and the public area is deserted , WTF are the WRC doing , or not , or are Wellingtonians simply not interested in racing anymore ?

That image of a deserted public area is so disconcerting and sad .

If they can't get people on course for this day then there really are problems .

It’s a combination of factors really.

    The Weather.

    The Entry Price.

A lot of Wellington is fairly woke there for racing is not there go

Its a long weekend in Wellington.

People are still away from Christmas and New Year  Holidays.

    The facilities are crap.

Lack of marketing and what marketing there was seemed focused on the music afterwards.

Lot of people are doing it tough as well.

I’m sure others can come up with plenty of other reasons.

I don't think any minister of racing will be able to help the greyhound code, and the industry only has itself to blame. Not sure that Winston will get in, nor somehow acquire the racing minister job. He has done some good things over many years, but think he needs to know when to move on. JMO.

He will get back in but your right he won’t be racing minister.

Check out the packages on offer at Trentham on Cup Day and tell me how many members will shell out the extra $100's to be in special areas.

Time will tell but I think they have lost the plot.

Oh wow, you are not wrong. The pricing seems crazy to me.

Here's something you don't think about when you put your money down.

I had a live quaddie ticket running on IMAGE OF YOU  in the last at Riccarton today , which was subsequently late scratched so onto the sub ( which I would never had all that money on...... runs fifth.

Quaddie pays $76,000........ mine would have been at least $30,000.

I ONLY HAD 5% OF IT BUT STILL A BIT STIFF EH

What’s your alternative? Cancel the bet?

Yes, our pastime needs gambling, and I believe there is a place for the Problem Gambling Foundation.

But I do not believe that the Problem Gambling Foundation should derive income from bets on gallops in N.Z., trots in N.Z., city and provincial gallops and trots in Australia and listed or group events in other countries.

Dogs are poker machines that bark.  If you need to bet at Kalgoorlie, Coonabarabran, Korea or some weird mid week outfit in the USA; you have a problem and need help.

Or you possibly just have free time/down time at different times to when NZ racing is on. I’ve got a couple of mates who are chefs and the like who have days off during the week. No gambling problem just like a bet in there spare time like a lot of us.

There is a mountain of cockamamie in that statement, the sole reason punters went elsewhere is purely because of the way they got treated. They weren't valued, not offered competitive products & seen as expendable.

Things might be changing for the better with initiatives like the $2000 win minimum & now this above, but forgive us punters for being skeptical as you are often defined by your past. These 2 initiatives will certainly go a long way to boosting turnover with money flooding back from overseas, I guess that assists them in showing the Govt that the legislation they seek is positive.

Hopefully the policy makers are smart enough to see through some of this & lock in the gains punters have currently before isolating us from having our own choice on what we can do. We are a different beast to Australia  & making reference to legislation restrictions there is incomparable  when we will have 1 selection option and not 10 like they do.

Good post Barry. It’s because of the competition that the tab have upped there game.

You would have to think if they were to block offshore competitors there wouldn’t be as much incentive to be innovative and competitive.

I am disappointed with the opinion put out by management of Auckland Thoroughbred Racing.  Ellerslie is such a wonderful place.  One of the few where it is possible to enjoy group one racing on the outside, and a great picnic race meeting if you are on the infield.

I recall taking my parents there for the 2nd January meeting about 40 years ago.  I parked in the infield and by the time we got to the underpass I was starving.  We had been past people barbequing beef steak, lamb chops, onions etc and the smell was divine.

Imagine you are a lowly earning Polynesian, so much of your income tithed to the church, and you want to enjoy New Year's Day; a day to celebrate all the optimism of a new year.  In the old days you could buy your grog and all the barbeque stuff from the supermarket and enjoy a wonderful day out.  At a cost that you could afford.  But some far quit misbehaved and the "dudge" waved a wet bus ticket over the miscreant's head.  ATR (in those  days the ARC) management were forced to forbid bring your own grog to the infield.  I had enjoyed the hospitality of some of the infield people after the last race on New Year's day.  By that time of the day my hosts were suitably lubricated; what a fun time.  All gone.  A pity.

Is the club really benefiting from the person in your example coming on course if they did allow BYO (other than the Gate fee)?

Seems to me like they wouldn’t be spending a lot that would benefit the club? Not arguing against allowing BYO but I’m not sure you want someone on course if they aren’t spending money.

Yep the policy is nuts. Makes no sense - but they seem determined to limit access to racing in so many ways....

I don't understand it either, I would have though the more people watching the better. Granted some may bet offshore and use the TAB to watch the races but they can do that now anyway by leaving $1 in there TAB account.

I would also remove the credit card top up fee they charge ( or at least only charge it on deposit's under say $20).
