  2. Rev Every Time won the 1955 Great Northern Steeplechase ridden by Sandy Walsh. Sandy also won it in 1958 on Irish Ace also trained by Bill Ford.
  3. Gruff that article refers to the 1947 Great Northern Steeplechase not the 1948 race.
  4. Gruff Abbey-Lu ran third. Could be him if he didn’t fall. Twelve o’Clock wasn’t in that race. The two I mentioned were the only fallers.

  11. Rev Captain Morgan was trained at Wingatui throughout his career. I think you are referring to Master Morgan who was trained for several seasons at Matamata by Peter Coleman.
  12. Insider yes his totals in those seven seasons were1, 14, 22, 25, 31, 29 and 28. In the 1969-70 he was the 11th equal apprentice with Tony Robb and in the 1970-71 season he was the 7th equal apprentice with Ron McAnn.
  13. Tarl your Dad David Reed had a remarkable association with Show Gate. He rode her 8 times for 7 wins and a second. Ashburton 13/3/73, Riccarton Great Easter Handicap 23/4/73, Riccarton 28/4/73, Banks Peninsula 27/10/73, Riccarton Stewards Handicap 3/11/73, Riccarton Churchill Stakes 10/11/73, Wingatui 26/12/73 ran second and Kurow 5/1/74.
  14. fermoy Andrew Carston won the South Island Trainers Premiership with 42 wins v the Pitman’s 40 wins. This ended a 25 year old run by the Pitman(s).
  15. Rev Tayla’s Great Grandfather Alf MacDonald trained for many years at Gisborne. His best horse was King’s Ransom who won the 1947 Watkins Handicap, the 1948 ARC Handicap, the 1948 Hawkes Bay Cup, the 1948 and 1949 Trentham Stakes, the 1949 Wanganui Cup and the 1949 Nolan Handicap. He also ran second to Balgowan in the 1947 Auckland Cup. Alf also won the 1957 Hawkes Bay Hurdles with Son Rae and in 1966 with Royal Ransom. The 1970 Rotorua Cup with Backfire and earlier the 1954 Wairoa Cup with Honey Spoon.

  17. Equestriad Time Teller’s dam Take Off had two unplaced runs at two. Her dam Air Lassie had three unplaced runs at six. Her dam Air Queen won 3 races from 42 starts- Waipa 12/12/25 over 6f ridden by J Barry. Rotorua 12/2/27 over 1m ridden by H Lee. Te Aroha 26/2/27 over 10f ridden by H Lee. She was owner-trained by Frank Loomb.
  18. Good ride on The First Link in Race 6 at Hastings today by Lemmy Douglas. Good to see an apprentice riding with his full feet in the irons.
  19. Old Man you are a tad harsh about Amateur Riders. Some of them riding today will have worked up to 10 horses this morning. You obviously don’t know your history. Among those Amateur Riders who rode successfully against professionals were Dennis Gray, Bob Autridge, Ken Browne, Paddy Payne, Bill and Brian Tims, Peter Ryan, Kevin Myers, Mike Brown and Raymond Connors- not a bad bunch of horsemen!

She won her second start at Thames on the 10/1/53 ridden by Trevor McKee over 6f. Her other win was at Te Rapa on the 14/2/53 ridden by Johnny Anderson over 6f.

  22. Old Man these races have been around for more than 50 years. EG Wanganui had one in divisions on the 3/7/73. 26 ran. At Levin on the 25/7/73 they ran a maiden race for 2yos and upwards. Two divisions and 33 ran aged between two and four.
