  1. Rex's 1000th winner was Palimony at Waimate on the 12 July, 1980. Aptly the race was the Jim Cochrane Memorial named after his trainer father. Rex was born in Waimate in 1930. He rode 33 winners as a jockey. He joined his father as a training partner in the 1955-6 season. They trained 13 winners that season and 21 winners the next. Jim Cochrane died at the end of that 1956-7 season. Shortly after Rex trained his first winner on his own- Cogitation in the 1957 Grand National Steeplechase. He was a noted mentor to apprentice jockeys like Jim Collett, Tony Robb, Steve Allen, Terry Brown, Gary Gibson and Paul Richards.

  4. Blue the original Akenehi was a brown filly bred in 1953 by Marco Polo 11 out of Lady Cambridge a Foxbridge mare. She only won two races from 53 starts. Joe Wickliff trained her at 2 and 3 for those two wins- Paeroa at her 17th start 9/3/57 ridden by Ian Medcalfe and Te Rapa 4/5/57 ridden by Graham McLeish. At four on she was trained by Harry Long. She gained multiple placings but did not win for Harry.
  5. Sad to note the passing of former jockey and starter John Humphries. He rode 163 winners. His biggest wins were the 1964 McGregor Grant Steeplechase on Ringlock, The 1965 Goldfields Cup on Kay Filou. The 1965 Founders Plate at Te Rapa on Yardstick. The 1965 and 1966 Waikato Hunt Cups on Sifta Sam and Explicit. The 1966 Easter on Rochdale. The 1966 Avondale Guineas on Barellan. His best season was 1966-67 when he rode 34 winners finishing 12= on the Jockey's Premiership. His first win was on Gold Symbol at Matamata on the 4/2/61 for Bill Ford. His last win was on Baildon in a Steeplechase at Waipa on the 16/6/73 for Mangakino trainer WF McCauley.
  6. Trackside R4 at Te Rapa today half way through the race they put up the first three in the running. Pity the three had raced in R3.

  9. Not surprised Ted. That race name would have been typed in by a freshly minted business or communication graduate on a six figure salary with no knowledge of racing. The person cleaning the toilets at the TAB H.Q's would know more about racing.
  10. Darryl and Joan thanks for the very close contest yesterday. It was very close and could have gone either way.
  11. Bennydale Kid thanks for the post. I have posted my analysis of the rise and fall and rise of the NZ First Party. Prior to the 2020 election the Racing Community, especially breeders, donated large sums of money to NZ First. Note that last year Peter Vela donated $62,500 to the National Party not NZ First. I would be interested in your anaysis of where NZ Firsts votes came from this election.
  12. Bennydale Kid. I have named several potential Racing Ministers in the new government. Who would be your selection?
  13. The others must have had elevated temperatures!

  16. Can't see Winston getting the Racing Minister role. The racing industry helped him get over 5% up to 2020 and then abandoned him in that 2020 election resulting in his party failing to get back into Parliament. This time the anti vaxers and conspiracy theory brigade helped throw him over the line.
  17. BnB highly unlikely we will get a female Racing Minister. If we did new Napier MP Katie Nimon would be ideal. Her family have been involved in racing for decades. Hard to envisage any first term MP's getting a cabinet role though.
  18. NZTR are delusional if they think the new National/ACT government are going to do anything for racing. National are promising tax cuts. Perhaps NZTR should lobby the new Racing Minister and ask him what tax relief he has in mind for reducing the current level of tax on betting?!
  19. Hard to believe but on Labour Day 1923 there were six gallops meetings- Trentham, Gore, Rangiora, Waipawa County, Waikato Hunt and Waverley.
  20. 50 years ago there were four meetings on Labour Day Monday- Te Rapa, Trentham, North Canterbury and Gore. Racing has taken a great leap backwards since then.
  21. She has been sidelined by a broken jaw sustained after a track fall 10 days ago. She is returning to NZ but intends going back to South Australia.
  22. The last two National Racing Ministers Nathan Guy and David Bennett were epic failures. Expect more of the same. Andrew Bayly would be great in this role but will be a non starter because he will be allocated more senior economic and finance roles. Pity. My MP Louise Upston owns recreational horses on her Karapiro property so she may be a long shot!
  23. Catalano best to retire the horse. If put back into work you might sneak a weak maiden sprint but zero chance of winning over ground.
