  1. Interesting that some very good journalists cannot transfer their writing skills to their oral skills.
  2. Hastings R1- No.12 $100 Place Hastings R3- No. 2 $100 Place Hastings R6- No. 2 $100 Win and $150 Place Hastings R6- No. 6- $50 Place. Good luck all.
  3. Zac Hussal I rate Craig Rail as the best commentator in the South. Like Bruce grossly underused.
  4. Noticed that Uncle Bruce ( named after Bruce Sherwin) was scratched from R4 at Cambridge yesterday. Hoping he can call it home when it makes his belated debut!
  5. Last Friday in Race 5 at Whanganui Bruce called Steal My Thunder Stole My Thunder throughout the race. Only an idiot savant like me would notice! I still rate him as the best galloping commentator in the north. Enjoying his calls in the CD at present.
  6. Senior TAB staffers wouldn’t be able to sell a black cat to a witch. Preoccupied with working out their itinerary for their Rugby World Cup soirée.
  7. No. 9 Lady Of Honour No.15 Ruthless Dame No. 16 Opal Ridge Good luck all.
  8. Demonstrates the folly of closing the Te Teko track. If it was still being used the Tauranga meeting could have been held there. Now we have the farcical situation of wet trackers running on the equivalent of a summer track.
  9. MissJools thanks for the clarification!
  10. Must have sponsored the race AS WELL.
  11. Great calls by Aaron at Te Rapa. Got to love his enthusiasm when calling all three codes.
  12. Swampfox yes Hikotere ran third on the middle day in the Valley Handicap behind Coronal and El Pedro. On the last day he won the DB ‘1600’.
  13. The other good horse sired by Redolent 11 was Hikotere who won the 1982 2ZB Golden Mile (Thompson Handicap) at Trentham trained at Paeroa by Trevor Mora and ridden by Gary Grylls.
  14. Oranmore was a good example of a horse outrunning his pedigree. His sire Redolent 11 was a very moderate stallion. His only other good horse was Redan the winner of the 1977 Whitbread Stakes at Avondale. His dam Blue Hale raced 22 times for two thirds and one fourth- all at Wairoa. His second dam Desire was unplaced in four starts.
  15. Rev no Oranmore did not run over hurdles. Not only was he speedy but he was durable. His first start was at Hastings on the 18/9/74 finishing third to the very good horses Inky’s Gold and March Legend. His last start was at Pukekohe on the 19/6/81 running 14/16 behind Saltash.
  16. Correction: the French jockey who won on Oranmore was Philippe Paquet not Patrick.
  17. swampfox Oranmore won 26 races. 23 in NZ and 3 in Australia- June Stakes, Pacesetter Stakes and Homestead Handicap. Les Jarvis trained him at two winning 4 races from his six starts. Owner Joe Doran trained him for the rest of his career. Remarkably 13 different jockeys won on him in NZ. Tony Williams 5, Kevin Cullen and John Dooley 3 each, Ken Reggett and Kenny Mathews 2 each and one each for Debbie Stockwell, Graham McLeish, Patrick Paquet the French Jockey, Jimmy Jones, BA Doyle, Toby Autridge, Cherie Saxon and G. McGrath.
  18. Show D’or is the only runner in Race 8 without a declared rider. I don’t think Kate will be riding it. She trains Matinee and has a half share in it but Lily Sutherland is riding it.
  19. Te Rapa R1 No. 3 $100 a place. Te Rapa R2- No.1 $100 a place Te Rapa R5- No. 1 $50 each way. Te Rapa R6- No. 3 $200 a win. Good luck all.
  20. fitzy Tiparillo won the Whyte Handicap on the 8/7/72 ridden by Bill Skelton for Marton owner-trainer Jack Howarth. He didn’t run in the Winter Oats or Parliamentary.
  21. Old Man Greek Meer won 13 from 139 starts. Trentham July record: 14/7/82 won Members Handicap. 9/7/83 won Whyte Handicap 7/7/84 won Whyte Handicap 11/7/84 second in Parliamentary 14/7/84 won Winter Oats 6/7/85 second in Whyte Handicap 10/7/85 won Parliamentary 13/7/85 won Winter Oats
  22. Nerula that Climbing and Mattiwilda double was at Avondale on the 31/3/62. It paid £520/2/6. Jimmy Hayes rode Climbing for trainer Harry Long at Te Rapa and Mattiwilda was ridden by LW Pilkinton for TJ Ingram at Henderson. Tragically both those two jockeys later died after race falls while still apprentices. Jimmy Hayes was apprenticed to his Dad Jack at Te Awamutu and LW Pilkinton was apprenticed to Dave Arnott at Te Aroha.
  23. Any lift in minimum midweek stakes will be welcomed. Currently if your horse wins a midweek race the stake covers about five weeks of training fees. Not much of an incentive to attract new owners into racing.
  24. Nerula that Jovic and Poet’s Pride double was at Te Rapa on the 24/11/62. Jovic was number 20 and Poet’s Pride number 12. The double paid £9,129/14/-. Jovic won the Waikato Cup ridden by Rex Barron and amazingly Rex rode Poet’s Pride as well. Old Parr ran second to Jovic ridden by Dave Raklander and Winnipeg 11 finished second to Poet’s Pride also ridden by Dave Raklander. Both Jovic and Poet’s Pride were trained at Takanini by GA Vincent and Frank Phillips respectively.
  25. A way to save millions by the TAB would be to stop all overseas soirees by senior staffers. All aboard for the Rugby World Cup later this year?
