    No one has demanded anything.
Any rebate would be at the discretion of any club once they have weighed the commercial considerations.
Any private outfit is absolutely within their rights to ask or open a dialogue about commercial deals with race clubs.
If owners want a better deal maybe they should organize themselves and demand it.

Tell you what - there's a group of people that hang out on these sites and say that the racing game is dying. They bemoan everything new that comes, bag the shit out of people who are trying to add interest to the game and create new ways and initiatives for people to get involved. Largely they are bitter keyboard warriors. They make little to no contribution in most instances other than to sit back and moan and bitch about absolutely nothing.
Yet, they are the same people that when a something like BGP comes along, look for the negatives in it. Bag the people behind it, through wild accusations around and can't see past the end of their own crooked and bent noses. Here's a new flash, it's because of people with mindsets like this that the industry is struggling in some corners. The negativity is ridiculous. Yes, there are things that can be done and things that need improved - show me a sector of life where there isn't some struggles.
I joined Boys Get Paid back when there was less then 100 members. It was a group of lads who threw the odd tip around in the hope of making a quick buck. Largely it was pretty successful, there was some good heat and some big bets landed. Over the past two years I've sat back and watched that page morph into something quite remarkable. I grew up in a township of non racing people. I could reel off a list of about 50 people from my small town who are now frequent racing punters because of BGP - they got a taste, and they liked it.
It's nontraditional in the sense that there is banter, noise and a new way of looking at punting - but you can't deny that it's a real positive for our industry. They're pumping money across the tote, not just on the big days but even days like today. This morning a tip was posted for a horse at Manawatu. In an hour that horse had moved from it's $31 quote into $11 and it's still dropping. There are countless examples of weights on money being placed on horses because of the BGP input.
One person throws a tip up and you can almost guarantee that a good percentage of the wagering on that particular runner will be held by members of BGP.
Luke Kemeys is a bloody genius. The foresight that man has and the ideas him and his mates have come up with for the future are exciting.
The establishment of the foundation is only another positive step forward, they want to bring people back to the races, encourage the industry to be better and challenge those who have had it good for far too long. And they're doing it in a way which may just ensure that the missing generation of punters are slowly but surely returning to the game. How anyone can bemoan a request that will only be beneficial for the industry going forward is beyond me.
Like anything, it's not yet perfect and it probably never will be. But it's heading in the right direction and being driven by a group of enthusiastic racing fans who have some pretty smart business acumen behind them. And from what I can see it's only going to get better.

Who within the senior management actually oversaw this whole transition. Seems pretty clear John Allen isn't a wagering/IT expert, he is a corporate/bureaucratic manager, who in NZRB actually did the work on this? I would have thought we would know their name by now as they would be centre stage taking all the credit for the marvellous platform..

I struggle with $18m down the gurgler on Typhoon and, if the numbers being bandied around by Brian de Lore are correct, another $30m up in front costs to get this package up and running. Then, once it goes live, an annual license fee to Paddy Power of $17m or so. It's flawed, however the NZRB is pregnant with the deal.
All of this has nothing to do with NZTR although realistically it does. Because, since the Racing Act came to be, NZTR, HRNZ, GRNZ and the 4 wise independent directors, if you include the Chair, have sat there and nodded their heads as know it all experts in this sphere of fully understanding what it takes to deliver NZ's betting software package. The Board not once but twice has approved these moves.
Back in 2008 Graeme Nahkes was tasked with performing the very first 5 yearly "Effectiveness and Efficiency Audit" of the NZRB being a statutory requirement of the 2003 Racing Act.
Salient words he wrote back then...."to the degree to which the NZRB remains a ‘statutory monopoly’ it will continue to be the subject of suspicion that it is bureaucratic, well resourced and overly ‘leisurely’ in its approach to its affairs. The experience of other organisations that have undergone a transition process like this organisation , suggests that further significant performance improvement should be expected"
His report was significantly watered down and for his services he was sacked with Michael Stiassny appointing KPMG to do the next audit in 2013. Published in 2014, it was a patsy report.
Quite simply from the NZRB's position of having over $60m available funds in reserves and then receiving an annual windfall in Duty relief of $35m+ to then get to a current day position of being in debt, beggars belief.
Perhaps some out there may be aware of who is putting the current "Effectiveness and Efficiency Audit" together? Many of those who've watched this debacle unfold over the past 15 years could write the contents for this edition.
In 1982 a guy walked into the Whanganui Computer Centre and, before blowing himself up, graffitied the words "We have maintained a silence closely resembling stupidity" hmmm....

Brian has long history in the game. Two positions that I know that he formerly had was editor of the Racetrack Magazine - Australia and General manager of Ra Ora Stud -Auckland. He was also a long time contributor to the Bloodhorse magazine - NZ.
Whist he has not made his income from the NZ Racing or Breeding industry for a long time he has continued to follow it intently.
Once the blood of the game is in your veins it never leaves!
I would venture to say that in the past he was very highly thought of as a journalist, and with his current articles one can see why.
For the record the Informant is a privately owned publication doing a great job in a very tough market.
I doubt that there is any industry, harder to be profitable in, than print media.  Just ask anyone!

DAVID WALSH TO JOIN NZTR STAFF

Former champion jockey David Walsh is to take up a full time role with New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.

Walsh, who has ridden more winners in New Zealand than any other jockey, will next month begin working as the NZTR training and welfare officer for the South Island.

Walsh will be based in Christchurch and will also have responsibility for health and safety and licensing.

Part of his role will be to mentor and support apprentice jockeys and the promotion of careers in thoroughbred racing.

He will begin his new position in early June and will take over from Will Harnett, who has resigned from NZTR to take up employment outside the racing industry.

Walsh announced his retirement from race riding in January, after a stellar career that produced more than 2500 wins, two New Zealand premierships and wins in the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, Brisbane Cup and Adelaide Cup.

He became the most successful jockey in New Zealand in terms of wins when notching win No. 2360, in the Marlborough Cup, at Blenheim in 2014.

His host of Group I victories in New Zealand included a hat-trick of Telegraph wins at Trentham.

He also made a mark as a trainer, winning a Group I race with Zirna.

“I’m really looking forward to the [NZTR] job,” Walsh said. “I didn’t want to leave the industry and this has come along at the right time

“I’ve already been helping the young riders down here [in Canterbury] off and on for the last five or six years.”

Walsh is passionate about recruiting people into the racing industry. “We need to go out there, into the schools and pony clubs, to explain what a great industry this is to work in.

“They aren’t coming to us at the moment and we need to get out there and find the riders and staff of the future. They need to know that you don’t have to be a Jim Cassidy or an Opie Bosson to do well.”

NZTR Racing Operations Manager Tim Aldridge said the organisation was delighted to have secured somebody with Walsh’s background.

“He will be the ideal person to follow the good work done by Will Harnett,” Aldridge said.

Personally I am happy with the appointment.  A job like this has a life span, and I think once he has his feet under the table we will see change.
At his level, in this game the market for jobs are limited.  So he may have saw NZ as an opportunity to make a difference on a country scale not just state scale.
His work with the racing.com website shows he knows where the future is.

I was referring to the language they're using in their communiques, it's a "conditioning" process, they're grooming the industry to prepare to assign their rights and the dedication of industry resources to the sports industry as distinct from the racing industry.
Read between the lines, the word "sports" now appears as often as the word "racing".
Beware, these people have a sinister agenda, they only care about turnover and growth because it looks good in the annual report ( and on their CV ), hence the inclusion of pokies in turnover figures now. It's mischievous and orchestrated chicanery.
My concern is that they don't appear to give a flying fuck about the racing industry..

The Ides Of March await him, Jacinda Brutus is sharpening her dagger, he is a charmless moron, devoid of panache and style, a charismatically bankrupt unionist only the Labour Party could elect.
The clock is ticking for him I'm afraid but it'll be a merciful release for all.
I hope he marries Max Key and they both fuck off, never to be seen or heard of again, particularly on our TV screens.

If our code representative is not representing us then "the movement" needs to start getting political and have him removed and replaced with someone we want who will represent us. Even if this position is in a minority that rep should be:
    1. Making representations that reflect the mandate provided from the industry
    2. Objecting to all decisions that are not in the industry's best interests
    3. Demanding accountability and fiscal responsibility
Even if you are outvoted, record your objection. Provide feedback to the industry and give an insight to what is actually happening. No different to your local MP.
If someone is sitting on that board and doing nothing then get rid of them.
I certainly hope the movement builds as this is one real hope we have - especially given that it is election year and we have an opportunity if it grows to take some advantage.

My advice to fellow industry participants is to get involved in the political process this election year. I don't care who you vote for but if National are returned and Nathan Guy continues to be the Minister of Racing nothing will change. The NZRB will continue to have appointments based on political allegiances rather than merit and a knowledge of racing and gaming.
