The Abuse of Perception Part 1
    By Dick Ciampa
I love greyhounds and support adoption of retired racers. I donate to adoption groups and toward hauls to move adoption-bound greyhounds where ever they need to go. I am a racing greyhound owner, and there are many, in fact most, who are just like me. We make sure our hounds are well cared for from birth to adoption.
Not long ago it looked like a failed adoption might go bad. When the racing kennel owner heard about the problem they moved heaven and earth to arrange to get the dog safely back. Ultimately the situation was resolved by the adoption group, but that owner knew, remembered, and cared deeply about the welfare of that hound. This kind of caring isn’t very newsworthy because it reflects the norm. Good news doesn’t sell.
Does any of this surprise you? Then you may know less about racing greyhound owners and caregivers than you think. What we think we know depends on the sources we depend on for information.
Who do you depend on? If you are skeptical regarding what I’ve just said, your source is probably an organization with a strong anti-racing stance, like Grey2K.
In spite of your skepticism, if you have an open mind, consider some of the following things.
Contrary to the perception carefully cultivated by self-interested fundraising campaigns, cases of wrongdoing are the exception. None are more outraged in such situations than those in the racing community itself. When a problem arises, those who discover it work with the proper authorities to ensure the situation is dealt with.
We do not simply lament the issue on the Internet, nor do we characterize an exception as the general rule. We take constructive action.
Since its inception 14 years ago, how many complaints has Grey2K, who constantly alleges abuse in their fundraising materials, filed with an animal control agency or with the National Greyhound Association? Ask them for a specific number.
If Grey2K is outraged by alleged mistreatment they claim to have observed, why haven’t they vigorously pursued it? After all, their organization’s president is a lawyer whose salary, along with her executive director husband’s is paid by donations from people who want to help greyhounds.
Have you ever considered why greyhounds in photos that appear in Grey2K material show little expression? Perhaps it is because they take advantage of how doe-eyed relaxed hounds look, or the sleepiness of a new greyhound mom.
Why are there no photos, among the many available, of pups being hugged and kissed by their owners, and held close by their children and grandchildren? Of pups growing strong, running and playing with their littermates, sharing common food bowls, jumping for joy when someone passes by?
Where are the photos of racers being massaged by their caregivers, being fed treats, and cuddled in their crates; photos of caregivers in tears when their hounds leave the kennel for another track or for a new life in adoption?
Those photos do not appear because they don’t work well with the endlessly repeated messages of greed and mistreatment that work so well in raising funds.
As a community we care about the welfare of animals, especially those we readily identify with, like the magnificent greyhounds so many of us have in our homes. The emotional bond that makes us to want to help a creature in distress leaves us vulnerable to impulse and manipulation by fundraising organizations. With emotions at the forefront, it is easy to discard the idea that we should do a little fact checking.
Most people do research before making a purchase or investment. Have you done any independent research about the lives of racing greyhounds, beyond what you are told by self-interested organizations with a Donate button on almost every website page?
Is the anti-racing organization you support confident enough to suggest you do some research of your own before sending them money?
It isn’t hard to do. Visit a farm or racing kennel. If you don’t want to go on your own, contact an adoption group that organizes visits, or can refer you to fact-based resources. Contrary to what you may believe, there are many adoption groups who work collaboratively with farms and kennels, and know first-hand how their hounds are treated.
If you can, visit a track, watch the post parade and see for yourself the magnificent condition of the greyhounds, then feel the exhilaration of watching them race for the lure. See the wagging tails at the end of the race, as the lead-outs come to collect them.
Eric Jackson, who is on the Grey2K Board of Directors, and indicated he had never been on a farm, was invited to visit one. The closest farm to him was a couple hundred miles away. He said it was too far to travel; however, he travelled from New Mexico to Florida for a Grey2K meeting.
I don’t know about you, but that leaves me shaking my head.
What those who take the trouble to learn will discover, is that people involved in racing are passionate, and driven by respect, admiration and love for their dogs. Contrary to the greed-motivated portrayal of organizations like Grey2K, racing greyhounds are not a primary source of income for most owners, and in fact for many it is a money losing hobby. Greyhound owners are as diverse as the folks reading this article. They are parents and grandparents, many are veterans, and they have jobs in all walks of life.
Many adopters discover their hound’s racing owner is thrilled to receive news of their retirees and happy to share information about their earlier lives. Friendships have formed starting with a simple enquiry, or a shared photo.
Before you condemn a group of people you don’t really know, please do a little research of your own. As a greyhound owner, I urge you to, I want you to. Does the organization you are relying on for information ask you to do the same? If not, doesn’t it beg the question, why not?

The only surprising thing about this Alltheway is that you were not first cab off the block. Asking you to like Awesome O's idea would be like asking a turkey to like.Christmas dinners.
What a load of bollocks about not getting runners for group races. There would still be plenty, just different dogs. If group races were dominated by Thrillings, Bigtimes and Opawa's it would be because they deserved to. You are quite proud to see them dominated by imports but not quality NZ dogs.
The more NZ imports the less viable and sustainable and more vulnerable the NZ industry becomes.

New Zealand Greyhound Racing Association, lets get real.  Instead of bringing in more rules and regulations, how about trying to make the New Zealand Greyhound industry grow, for the New Zealand owner, trainer and breeder. At the moment, we have no industry whereby the New Zealand breeder can get a fair price for his pup, break in or race dog.  Its time that the Australian import stops taking from our industry.  There is no problem with the Australian import coming to New Zealand but how about they are not eligible for any group race at all.  Let the New Zealand owner/breeder have the opportunity to build a New Zealand based industry.  Thereby the money from the group races goes back into the New Zealand industry, with half of it not going away from our kiwi industry.  Bring in as many imports as we like, but to race in grade races only.  The association says welfare is now our top priority, then why are we letting half of all our top stake money go offshore, not being returned into our kiwi based industry.  I am sure if the New Zealand greyhounds were being imported into Victoria at the rate they are here, it would be stopped.  We need to move forward in a positive way and make a New Zealand based industry for New Zealand bred dogs and New Zealand owners.  This would continue to build the sport in a positive way.  I feel we have not had one change from the association that has made it better for our industry to move forward.
Good luck to all the hard working New Zealand breeders out there.

I get the possum skin rule, and the thought process  behind that.
The squeaker rule is subjective due to its definition and i would suggest difficuilt to enforce.
For example what if you had a squawker or a bleaker (not a squeaker) and it didnt mimic an animal - it just made a noise, then there would be no problem.
The focus for NZGRA needs to be on the fact the NZ greyhound industry in its current state is not sustainable, that is what will cripple the code. Sustainability plays a very important part in all aspects of life, the greyhound code is no exception. There is too much window dressing going on and the code trying to make itself look good to those that have little knowledge of the industry, this needs to stop and the real issues addressed.

We were having some family financial problems so the wife & I discussed how we were going to sort it out.
We decided that we couldn't spend any money on ourselves, only the necessities.
She told me I couldn't by beer anymore...... I reluctantly agreed.
One week past & she had returned home from her grocery shopping trip to Countdown.
Inside one of the 7 large plastic bag was a smaller plastic bag with things like lipstick & eyeliner.
I asked her how it was ok for her to buy those things for herself.
She said that she just wanted to look really nice for me.
I told her that's what the beer was for.

Once again I want to bring this up. I had an email conversation with Jim when he was in charge several years ago. He thought it was a great idea and why hadn't it been thought.of before. He said he would bring it up at a boardmeetong. Don't know if he did. Some time after that I thought I would given the new welfare officer a chance to give his opinion on my idea. Never got a response to my emails which made me very cynical about how genuine GRNZ were about greyhound welfare. Out of sight out of mind. I think we need a fund set up to cover vet bills for when a race dog injures itself during a race. They put their bodies in the line every time they.go.out there.  They deserve to be looked after when things go terribly wrong. As they do.. many injuries can be repaired I have about 4 retired ones at home that have broken hocks and one that snapped s front leg. All repaired. All now sound and most importantly.all happy.  If it means taking a percentage of the stake money to fund this so be it. It would be a tangible way.of showing the WORLD that we really do give a shit about our dogs.

Hi Globe, the yr is nearly up, next month, and what a fantastic yr its been for Donald Trump. I do not think at any time in history, that a President has had so many crisis's thrown at him at once. Hurricane's, fires, mass shootings, Nth Korea, Iran, ISIS, not to mention home grown racist groups such as black lives matter, and the KKK. Throughout this, Donald Trump has displayed great leadership. And despite all these disasters has managed to grow the economy at record levels, and reduce unemployment in the millions.
Yes Globe, all in all, a very good yr for Trump in what has been very difficult times for America and the World. Really, we can thank our lucky stars that we have a strong and wise leader in the White House in this difficult time in history.
And one other thing Globe, isn't it refreshing to see a Politician stick to his campaign pledges to the letter as has Trump.

The high class son of Nina's Girl ran his last race at Waikato on Thursday night after injuring his near foreleg at the catch. He was a very good dog that never reached his full potential.
I had a small wager on him, and saw to my sadness his failure to make the dia's, being taken away on the golf cart. Consequently the first thing I did friday morning was look up the Stipe report to find out what happened to him. Unfortunately this was of no help, just making note of the fact Fekitoa was injured at the catch. There was no standown given for the dog, there was no mention he had been euthanised at the track. So I looked up the author of the report and rang him. I asked what happened to Fekitoa, why no stand down?. Was then informed poor Fekitoa had been euthanised at the track. So my next question was, why wasn't this noted in the report, answer, NZGRA policy is not to mention it in Stipes reports.
Ok ,I get it, it is to hide the ugly side of sports injuries, and to sanitise these public reports so as not to give ammunition to animal right activists. Now forgive me from feeling that this is not right, it feels corrupt, and at the very least, is designed to mislead the public. This is the actions NSW were guilty of, sanitising Stewards reports, this is why the NSW Board of Greyhound racing were sacked.
I really find it hard to believe, that at a institutional level they are purposely leaving out facts that do not suit the agenda. And I have to ask why. Every thinking sane person knows there are risks when competing in all sports, and as in Greyhound racing there will always be the occasional fatality. Horses have it, Motor racing have it, Boxers have it, Mountain climbers have it, it is the nature of the beast. In Greyhound racing, there would probably be no more than 2/3 month throughout the country that need to be euthanised on humane grounds, so why hide it. Joe public will except this, especially when its at a very tiny level.
I bring this up, as all Vets at the track will have independent reports on dogs euthanised by them, so there is a paper trail out there that is not matching the Stipe reports, and will be very easily proven by anybody with an animal rights agenda with a view of shutting down dog racing. This is a very dangerous policy to take that has the potential to strip the NZGRA of any credibility just as happened in NSW. Imagine if there was a Ministerial Enquiry into dog racing, and the Stipes are called to testify, and asked the question, why wasn't dogs such as Fekitoa mentioned in the Stipes report as having been put down, answer, we have been instructed not to include it.
Better to tell the truth me thinks, this has the potential to do great harm, and its important that Stipe reports clearly and honestly reflect the days happenings.

Why do so many people not "get it" when it is so clear and simple? The ban was instigated against countries that won't/can't supply background on applicants wanting to enter the USA. It is not a ban against countries they just don't take a fancy to. Not only are the left expert hypocrites, they are not bad at parsing any words used to suit their own narrative. What responsibility should the US press have to not make their country look ridiculous by continually attacking the administration because they have a different opinion, rather than simply reporting on them. We are starting to get that from our press as the sports interviewer habit of stating ones own opinion and asking the interviewee if they agree encroaches into the political reporters. Once the press wake up and smell the coffee that reporters are not the celebrities, we should all be better off. The most amazing thing is how bizarre and nasty these PC liberal types actually behave if they don't get their own way. Wow!

There is not a shred of evidence of any link between the Trump team in regards to the election. This is fact. It is a story line put out by left wing extremists. Comey knew this, and should of wapt this investigation up long ago. He became politicised rather than doing his job of being a Policeman. He also failed over Clinton, and not prosecuting her when he stated there was a lot of evidence concerning her.
As for Russia meddling in the US election, hell yes, of course, why not. They do this all the time, the most recent being France. America do it to, this is what the CIA do, core business. Western Governments want people elected that are sympathetic to their cause, normal behavior. So pointing the finger at Russia is hypocritical in the extreme.
Donald Trump was perfectly entitled to sack Comey, as he was appointed by a President, and works at his pleasure.
You cannot believe anything reported here in NZ about Donald Trump, its all fake news put out by CNN, and regurgitated by our news broadcasters.
