  1. Chopper down http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/4239970/Chopper-down/ Missing helicopter and two bodies found http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/national/4236297/Helicopter-and-bodies-found Allan Munro, together with his wife, Glennis, bred and owned many racehorses in the last few decades, including Lautenschlager. They also have had jumpers. Allan died Thursday when the helicopter he was in had mechanical difficulties and crashed.
  2. Thanks. I wondered if he had been murdered like Alydar. Does anyone know the name of the horse that played Secretariat in the movie?
  3. The 2010 movie, Secretariat, is rated at IMDB.com as 7/1 out of 10. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1028576/ This reviewer below refers to info not in the movie. Does anyone know the real story? If so, what is it? Secretariat takes a ride into history By AMY BIANCOLLI Copyright 2010 Houston Chronicle Oct. 7, 2010, 5:52PM http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/movies/reviews/7236845.html "Just how much you enjoy Secretariat, Disney's glossy-coated biopic of the celebrated racehorse, depends in large part on how much you know of his career. If you know zilch, you'll be thrilled. If you know slightly more than zilch, you'll be a little less thrilled. If you know the pertinent details, and I'm thinking of certain race results from 1973, you may regard the film as a pleasant two hours spent with two magnificent creatures. The horse is gorgeous; Diane Lane is gorgeous; they spend a lot of time staring into each other's eyes, backlit by perpetual sunsets. The whole film is golden, from her helmet of blonde hair to the halo of light embracing (almost) every shot. I'll be writing this review spoiler-free for the folks who know zilch. I had assumed such viewers did not exist until, on a whim, I performed an unscientific survey of people exiting the theater at a promotional screening. Two-thirds of them knew nothing of Secretariat's legacy going into the film. I am envious. Without the element of surprise, this sparkling bauble of American sports nostalgia adds up to pretty pictures, thundering hooves, gauzy setpieces
  4. Correction. I sent the photo of the Zabeel filly to Annie at annie@worldnz.net.co.nz and the email bounced as "Name or service not known." If anyone knows the true email, please advise and I'll retry.
  5. At this first link is a photo of the Zabeel filly and her chestnut dam. The filly had a red cap although it isn't clear in the photo. http://www.thoroughbrednews.co.nz/nz/De ... &stud_id=0" I know more about cat genetics than horse colour genetics. In cats when colour appears on the head and tail, they are called vans, can only produce bi-colours, and ***the van gene is different than the pure white gene.*** Pure whites though are usually born with a colour cap showing the color that the cat is masking. That colour cap will disappear by 8 months. Pure whites have either copper eyes, blue eyes or one of each called Odd-eyed. Deafness is associated with the blue eyes. Pure whites are not albinos. Albinos have pink eyes. I have the photo and it clearly shows the red cap. I am emailing it to the Moderator and if she wants it posted, she can post it: "Meet Waikato's newest All White http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/waikatotimes/0,2106,3839419a6004,00.html 25 October 2006 By ESTHER HARWARD Record-breaking stallion Zabeel pulled another fast one yesterday when a foal he had sired for a $100,000 fee was born pure white. The new filly has impeccable breeding and will stick out like a sore thumb on the track when she makes her race debut in three years' time. Zabeel's owner Sir Patrick Hogan said from his Cambridge Stud farm yesterday that the foal's Sydney-based owner, Rod Martin, had to pull over to the side of the road to take in the news when he called him after the 9.30am birth. "I said: `You've got something that nobody else has got, but I'm not sure it's something anybody else would want,"' Sir Patrick said. "I said: `You have a foal, a filly, and it's white all over.' Mr Martin asked: `Well, where did that come from?' I said: `We have no idea whatsoever."' Zabeel's bloodline produced another pure white horse five years ago
  6. Kubala Seed in Gore has bagged linseed as well. For anyone who doesn't know, these seeds need to be ground on a short term basis because of linseed's tendency to go rancid quickly once it is ground. Also linseed is notorious for sticking to the colon and passing through undigested so must be ground. I've nearly worn out my coffee grinder grinding the stuff.
  7. Good info, Kay. The following applies to people and could be adapted for horses. You can also buy Flax Seed (Linseed) from a seed merchant in 25 kg bags for just a few dollars. It is not treated against birds as many others are. So it is edible. Then grind it in a coffee grinder. Dr. Johanna Budwig developed a cure (and preventative) for cancer and has been nominated 6 or 7 times for the Nobel Prize for Medicine for her discovery. Big Pharma resists natural cures because they don't make money from healthy people. Dr. Budwig's recipe is 1 cup of cottage cheese. Add 1 cup of ground flax seed. It is fairly tasteless so I add 1 can of pineapple. Mix in a whiz. Eat for breakfast. Cover with yogurt and/or cooked oatmeal. This prevents and cures cancer. Linseed is 45% omega 3 oil so this method is much less expensive than buying oil in the stores. Refrigerate and use within a few days as flax oil tends to go rancid quickly. This info is at many places on the internet. Here are just 3 links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanna_Budwig http://curezone.com/foods/flaxseed_oil.asp http://home.online.no/~dusan/diseases/cancer/cancer_dr_budwig.html Another anticancer item is to take 14 apricot pits a day (ground in a coffee grinder with 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds). I add it to the cereal bowl above with the flaxseed. Dr. James Howenstine -- Can cancer be avoided or cured with vitamin B-17? - laetrile http://www.newswithviews.com/Howenstine/james53.htm We have practical experience that this cure works.
  8. We live in a high lightning area and one of our horses went through a fence in a lightning storm. When windy or before lightning storms, we supplement with Magnesium so they are calm in a storm. I would consider it inhumane to put Magnesium Chloride in their water because the taste is so bad and they might drink less water which they need. We use Magnesium Oxide in their feed, dampened a bit to knock down the dust. Ditch the Ritalin for kids. Magnesium can be given to children for hyper activity and works better than Ritalin with none of the side effects. The key is to take it in divided doses because too much at one time will cause diarrhea, Also you don't want to take Magnesium Oxide with meals because it interferes with hydrochloric acid. Magnesium Chloride can be taken with meals but again, tastes bad. Antacids like Malox and Tums have Magnesium as their main ingredient but also have Aluminum which is linked to causing Altzheimer's.
  9. Perhaps some breakdowns such as that of Barbero which are blamed on inbreeding or linebreeding might instead be caused by nutritional deficiency, particularly, Magnesium deficiency. A few years two horses who were with the same trainer were pulled from a big AU race, maybe the Melbourne Cup, I can't remember, for a condition which caused them to shake. That condition was the result of Magnesium deficiency. Dr. Carolyn Dean, M.D, N.D. wrote in her book The Magnesium Miracle - http://www.drcarolyndean.com/articles_the_magnesium_miracle.html that 80% of the people in West are deficient in Magnesium because of the changes in the way paddocks are fertilized and as a result many health problems arise. See above link. Magnesium deficiency would be consistent with animals grazing on paddocks, although I've seen some farmers give better care to their animals than they do to themselves. Sheep and cattle get stroppy when Magnesium deficient. If a horse is the same, give him regular Magnesium in his feed and/or supplement the paddocks. Magnesium is critical for good bone health. When Calcium is given without sufficient Magnesium, Calcium will suck Magnesium from the bones, ***weakening the bones,*** because it requires Magnesium to dissolve. Without sufficient Magnesium, Calcium will lay itself down in the soft tissues such as the lungs, heart, blood vessels and cause high blood pressure, breathing difficulties, heart problems and so on. See the above link. Calcium causes muscles to contract. Magnesium causes them to relax. Both are needed. Too much Phosphate causes cancer. Magnesium is particularly recommended for athletes, so be sure to keep up the Magnesium for horses. Magnesium Oxide is tasteless. Magnesium Chloride tastes bad but can go in water. Magnesium relaxes the involuntary muscles including the colon and excess doses will therefore cause diarrhea. If that is evident, back off a bit on the Magnesium. Magnesium is also required for foaling as Magnesium helps the uptake of Calcium and other minerals. Pretty much the same rules work for humans and for animals when it comes to Magnesium. For the sleepless, 1/4 tsp of Magnesium Oxide in a glass of water before bedtime will cause you to sleep like a baby. 10. It seems his trainer, Mr. Kavanaugh thought it was a fluke and was not expecting it. I played and replayed his reaction to the win over and over again about 6 times. I don't know when I've seen anyone so surprised and happy.
  11. What is the key to this breeding success? 4 times on Native Dancer (3 on Natalma)? Shocking pedigree
