Many years ago an Australian political reporter asked the late Bob Hawke if he had ever been wrong.
Hawke looked straight into the camera lens and said "Yes".
The political reporter was astonished that a politician would ever admit that he had been wrong.
"And how was that Mr Hawke?"
I"I backed Galleon to beat Manikato" responded Bob Hawke,
    I sincerely hope that people will not say that Tauhei Notts was once wrong;
"He backed Orchestral to beat Zarkozi"..

Actually I agree with your summary.
About 20+ years ago I had a good quality little mare who when carrying a low weights under the wide spread  range of the time, won a Great Easter Hcp, carrying 50kg, ran 2nd beaten a head in the Stewards Hcp carrying 51kg and 4th in the Railway Hcp carrying 51kg
I am certain that with today's compressed weights' she couldn't have done that..

The sad thing is that NZTR on one hand go on and on about declining starter numbers and declining foal crops and seem to think that increasing stakes from any pot of gold they can find is the answer, when that strategy has failed to make any difference for decades now. Yet, they show no inclination to fix the handicapping system and give the handicappers a tool to work with that would keep horses in work earning more wagering revenue etc.

I have become quite concerned about the handicaps set for open handicaps.
I will endeavour to set my handicaps for he the two open races at Riverton, next week.  Your criticisms of what I put will be eagerly awaited.  Basically, if everybody moans then the handicapper has got it right.

Thanks for your confidence Nerula but I agree with nomates. Not that I don't think that weight differential can make a difference, but that the amount that handicappers have to play with here is insignificant and has no chance of creating proper handicaps. A very good former NZTR senior handicapper told me the same thing, but then moved on to greener pastures.

Sometimes owners use irony when naming a horse.
Like, years ago "Head On" was out of Arson.
So when I first saw Pulchritudinous at her first start in September I thought she may have been out of "Wahinenui", but not so.  It was "Showus".

Velocious arrived at the track just 25 minutes before the start.  I would be concerned if I had a 2 year old in a group one race with such an inadequate time to settle down after stepping off the float after what had been a torturous ride to the track.
That filly could be something extra good.
Possibly off topic, but those road works south of Hampton Downs on HIghway One caused delays that are unforgiveable in a first world country.  Friends who went to Pink concert on Friday afternoon got similar delays.  And after all those delays to watch the Warriors fade in the closing moments of their match; the road delays were sad but that result was terrible.

    place pool $180,000
there seems to be some sort off error (bad sell) maybe
the strange thing is the place prices seem to have been adjusted to account for the bad sell apart from runners 6 and 10.....
tote punters have a rear win
    very strange.....

    Memories.
Corroboree in 1972 was memorable.  It was the day of my maiden century.  The first time I made $100 on the punt on a raceday.
I have seen most Derbies since then.  Orchestral is one of the best.  I am confident that she will do better in later life than Sherwood Forest, Crown Prosecutor, Coniston Bluebird and Cut The Cake.

Tauhei Notts got a reaction from JJ Flash in Manawaru
I see the cops had to shoot a man yesterday.  Very sad.  It happened in Matamata-Piako District.  Then I read further and found, after some research, that it was at Manawaru.  I asked a friend why the news media didn't put in Manawaru area.  He explained that nobody has ever heard of Manawaru.
Well, I am so old I remember a good extremely tough, pacer from Mid Canterbury named Manawaru.  He got that name as the owner's brother had a dairy farm at Manawaru.
So, some people have heard of Manawaru.

Am I getting the wrong end of the stick?
I had seen the huge improvement in stakes and bet a man $200 that the Book One median would rise at least 10%.  After Day One I was laughing my tits off.  Then Day Two, then Day Three.  $200 down the gurgler.
The breeding industry has had its bad days, but from what I've seen this week, contrary to all the great news I had seen in the past two months; I thought the sales would have gone a hell of a lot better.
My $200 is peanuts to the vendors at Karaka.
I wonder if that awful news about Ellerslie, with the mouth watering level of stakes, being close to being called off because of the slippery track; I wonder if that has had an awful impact on the later days of the sale, once the facts came out into the open.

I don't know what anyone else thinks but surely the big issue is what's going to happen with all of these book 2 and similar horses now there's no Singapore and Macau. I noticed 2 have been sold to China, nothing to Malaysia or Korea the only markets for these horses. I'm sure also it must affect the owners and trainers who have these particular type of horses  and relied on selling them through trials and keeping themselves afloat by doing so. What's going to happen now?
Or am I over exaggerating it ..

Great three days for the top 25 % of Book One.
Congratulations to T Nott's,  and my old mate, Sir John Thompson and his Legal Partners and Rich Hill Stud their families  and staff. And Colin and Irene Thompson
There have been some very quiet years since their purchase of The Wilson farm previously known as Ever Green Stud.
Check Rich Hill's website. They still list " Past Stallions " All of them are listed there. The good the indifferent and ones that were

But the old adage " Form is temporary ,class is permanent "  certainly is true for John.
    And Sir Philip Brown.
Fantastic judgement  by Ancroft Stud mentor Sir Philip Brown has been shown for decades.
His nursery stud hasn't stood a stallion for many years.Much to the relief of Lady Catherine Brown.
He kept enough of the Battle Eve family and Oakville blood and regularly bought a mare or two or specced a yearling .
    ( Like Legarto for $90k )
Battle Wagon, champion NZ Sire was followed by Oakville ?,  and Battle Eve's son by Balmerino  " King Delamere " .And another Stallion ?
Phil's judgement and belief in Proisir from three and four Years ago came to fruition at Karaka 2024.
    Lot 290,  420,  480.

note : The trackside male who interviewed  Phil Brown after one of his recent 2022, Group One successes,
He asked with that smiley cheesy grin...
" so what does it feel like to breed your first Group  One winner ?".
    * point one Phil Bought the Group One Filly at auction.
    * point two Phil had Bred a Cox Plate winner , El Segundo,

NO tote windows on course?  Use your cell phone!
Any management consultant will tell you that on course tote windows are too expensive.  Counting, handling, then reconciling cash is a hugely time consuming and expensive exercise now that the minimum wage has been pushed so high.
BUT, if that management consultant had spent the past 60 years dealing with, chatting with and observing punters in many countries, as I have, then that management consultant would recognise the awful expense of tote windows is actually money very well spent.
    Tote windows are necessary for the impulse bettor who, with a bursting bladder says to a mate;
"put that fifty on the 7 horse"
as he dashes for the loo.  Supermarkets recognise the impulse buyer with all that junk they have next to the checkout counters.  The tote must also recognise that part of their market.  A part of their market that if the transaction involves intricate manoevering of the fat fingers around a tiny keyboard, then the transaction will not go ahead.
The Green Party member who wants to put $40 on Golly Gee because it is descended from that Melbourne Cup winner Light Fingers, will probably not have a TAB account.
