  1. Iffraaj and guillotine both enjoyed good performances today at Auckland... Notwithstanding the obvious bug guns.

Guillotine in particular enjoyed a very good ready to run set of run ups and a good effort in the two year old race today. I'm predicting a wow factor horse coming in the future for thus horse.

I have an iffraaj filly so will remain modest on that feedback.... But bloo&y good going :-)

  2. Tauhei, my father comes from County Cork, the home of blarney and he always told me never to let the facts get in the way of a good story. Facts are I was in Greece last year, and drank a lot of Mythos beer, other than that it's a good story :)

no...an excellent story... you should do the next in the trillogy The Da Vinci Code, then Angles and Demons....you just need a name for the threequal.

  3. people forget this guy was a top sprinter in the UK. The July Cup is a good race and having watched the last 20 years of it on youtube you can see a number of sires that stood over here coming from the race....

in general if you were running on at the finish you ended up being a stallion of some potential....e.g Stravinsky, etc

If you were not running on at the finish...well....Paris House comes to mind.

interesting to watch if you want a look.

  4. Rusty Spur standing in Christchurch with Nicky Lloyd. Only served two mares last year. Service Fee $1,250.

No Excuse Needed stands for only $6,000 which has to be great value. I agree that Keeper has similar stats this season but he stands for $15,000 which is also good value I think for what he has done.

NEN seems to cross really well with O'Reilly mares. Perhaps someone could explain why that is. I remember once when I suggested to the late great Clive Harper, that I should send my O'Reilly mare (Freequence) to him, he advised that it wasn't a good mating on paper....I guess even Clive could be wrong sometimes.

its likely that O'Reilly is just a good broodmare sire....a bit like saying XYZ stallion over a zabeel mare is a good cross, perhaps largely becasue Zabeel is ...well just good!

  5. Seventeen winners so far in his first NH season is not to be sniffed at. No doubt the stakes successes will follow.

What are his youngsters here looking like - anyone got one?

..but hes only about 10 days old. 2nd foal of a pentire mare.... strong enough - without being a standout...

It would be interesting to hear from those who have broken horses....

  6. apart from the very good idea of not paying prize money 6th to 10th ....

Historically , the payments back to 10th have been 'very important' to NZ'er who have gone in the race...and don't tell me that they have earnt enought gettting there...

Of course the issue now is getting in the race.

There have beewn some historic entries that were there on past performance rather than strong chance status - but then if you had qualified would't you have run !!!??? I would.

  7. Tom Rolfe is the dam sire of St Reims second dam, the mother of L'Quiz - a very strong build up of the no. 9 family ...

If you have time for a classic horse...

I not a good breeder has Kate (St Reims) going well at the moment...starting at Hawkes Bay this weekend in the HAWKE'S BAY BREEDERS GOLD TRAIL 3YOF STAKES 3YOF SW

  8. looking in teh current stallion register (page 176) would list War Hawk II if there was ... at it captures all stallions in the book with that horse in the pedigree (to the 5th generation anyway).

you might find this interesting: sorry if the formatting doesnt work but the link is here:

  9. I've got a smaller than average but strong mare, and I'm wondering whether I'm better off going to a good smaller stallion rather than try and put some size in the breed - breed to her strengths or move back to the average?

What are your learned thoughts on this?

I would try to bring her back to average...especially if its her first foal....there will be many suggestions....

You dont see many small ones win big races at Flemington in Melbourne (always exceptions..tidal light etc).

some horses that can leave good size that might be worth a look (without knowing pedigree) include but not limited to:

    any suggestions

    Nom Du ju (sp)

    iffraaj

Falkirk is purhaps a strong version for you with slightly less size if yo ugo that way...

more importantly what are you trying to breed to race where...???

  10. The mother Egyptian Queen, a great mare who should have been nominated for broodmare of the year, is buried in my back paddock...nice claim to fame !?

    Egyptian Queen left:

    G1 Egyptian Raine (Desert Sun)

    G1 Egyptian Ra (woodborough)

$1M earner in Hong Kong also (by al Akbar)

3 million dollar earners, from three different stallions make her a b. good mare !!! RIP.

  11. Thus the ones that carry on are the tough nuggets owners love to own. They win higher rating races which could kid the unthinking or biased into believing that the female sex is advantaged in these by the weight dispensation.

That of course is not true as most of the gender have quit leaving just the tough ladies. And so you have a small pool of tough tarts towelling up all these ordinary geldings.

I support your thought and have raced such a filly / mare. Good point and well articulated.

  12. this is not advice for our $20K....

but you could focus on a strong female in Best in Show...e.g. have a look at Per incanto over her and see the nice duplpication of Best in Show. It might have been better if Last tycoon was the 1st dam.

You have two very nice stallions in the first two dams.

  13. Respected racing journalist John Berry has made this insightful comment on his regular Thoroughbred Internet column.

The deeds of Little Bridge this week served to remind local breeders that older stallions are too quickly dismissed. Faltaat was 16 years old when Little Bridge first saw light of day. Zabeel was 22 years old when this seasons NZ Oaks runner up Zurella was born. Faltaat will be 22 years old this year, Pentire 20 yrs, O’Reilly 19 yrs and the evergreen Zabeel 26 ! These superior bloodlines are not going to be around forever.

    Reng would say...

An older stallions result do drop off with age - but a good stallion only becomes slightly "less good" so e.g. Zabeel's long term average 8% stakeswinners to starters may become (say) 5%...

Thats still as good as most very very good sires..... and way better than the great unknown.

  14. Not Nolan.

If you look at the replay he was looking at the horse directly on his inside 100 out and once he had that horse covered he sat up on her thinking he had it in the bag not knowing that 2 horses were flying down the outside.

Reminded me a lot of Opie Bosson's ride on Watch Officer a few years back where he sat up on the horse only to be nailed by Quasin down the outside.

Nolen nearly stole "defeat from the jaws of victory" and even the most staunch supporters of jockeys short stuff and china guy would have to concede that.

    Absolutely correct.

  15. If Zed is at Erewhon right now, he will be wondering what hit him.

We have 3 or 4 inches of snow in our Ashburton back yard this morning.

Zed will have a yard of snow on his back 3 or 4 inches.

When the sky blues again there will be no more spectacular sight than the alps surrounding Erewhon and Mesopotamia stations and the braided headwaters of the Rangitata river. Lakes Camp and Clearwater may just freeze over for good measure.

It is truely a magical place after a snow storm, cant wait to get up there.

I will take an oddfellow and a carrot in case I see a city slicker amongst the Matagauri.

    niegh...Zed here,

Wal and Cooch are cutting tracks in the snow... ..horse and dog are fighting fit and we are all hoping that cheeky is coming round to watch the footy this weekend with Wal or he'll be grumpy in the morning....sniff sniff jess is in heat again...

gota go the murphy's are here....

  16. the sun the will make a difference but I have found if you feed flower of sulpher in the feed it will heal from the inside ,good for the horses that will not let you pull the scabs off .Touch wood they do not seem to get it again . the swelling would have gone due to the bandages
